He died on Jul 23 1966 in Pittsburgh, PA.(9) (6) Joseph Apel was very sick for many months before he died in July 1966. He spent several months in the hospital, and his son Edwin visited him there several times. Edwin said that that was the first time his father ever got close to him as father and son. -- August 9 interview.

Joseph Apel died of cancer on July 23, 1966, in a hospital, while his wife, Elizabeth, was feeding him his lunch. Elizabeth had told her granddaughter, Betty Jean Bohntinsky, that she would visit Betty Jean on July 23, but later cancelled the visit because her hearing aids were bothering her. Therefore, she was able to be with her husband when he died. -- Ruth Apel, August 9 interview.
Joseph Apel was educated at St. Augustine, and was a painter by trade. -- Family tree.

Joseph Apel during the 1920s and until the Depression was an interior decorator, doing wallpaper hanging and interior painting. He and his partner had several employees. The partner was dishonest and took a lot of the business. Joseph painted only periodically during the Depression, living a considerable amount of the time on welfare. During or shortly after WW II he got a job as an elevator operator in a department store in Pittsburgh. -- Edwin V. Apel, Sr., August 2001.

Grandpa Apel loved to play cards, tell jokes, go for walks, and smoke cigars. -- Win Apel.

His Social Security No. was 171-14-9227. -- Apels Heirloom.

Joseph Apel moved from Keystone Street to Fern Street in Pittsburgh, PA, in April 1966, had his 50th wedding anniversary in May, got very sick in June, and died in July 1966. Joe was sick for some time, and many believe that he held on for his 50th wedding anniversary so that all his children would be together--something they had never done because of all the "in-fighting" among the children. -- August 9 interview.
He was married to Elizabeth Josephine GUENTNER on May 24 1916 in Sharpsburg, PA, St. Mary's Cemetery.(8) When Joseph Apel and Elizabeth Guentner were married in May 1916, they lived at 5255 Wickcliffe Street in Pittsburgh, PA, [the home of his father and mother, John Apel and Mary Elizabeth Koehler]. Ruth and Agnes, the first two children, were born there in 1917 and 1919. Then, they moved to Beaver, PA, where Rita and Rose Mary were born in 1920 and 1922. After Beaver, they moved to Stanton Heights in Pittsburgh, and then to 53rd Street and Butler Avenue in Pittsburgh where both Anna Louise and Joseph were born in 1923 and 1925. Their next home was at 57th Street and Butler Avenue, where Edwin Apel was born in 1926. In early 1927, the family moved back to 5255 Wickcliffe Street where Lois, Bernie and Anna Jean were born in 1928, 1932 and 1937. In about 1939 they moved to 5339 Carnegie Avenue or Street in Pittsburgh, and in about 1949 they moved to 5235 Keystone Street in Pittsburgh. "Former Blawnox leader in politics, volunteer work. By Lawrence Walsh. Post-Gazette Staff Writer. It didn't take long for Blawnox residents to realize that Agnes E. Skanderson had moved into town in 1939. The Lawrenceville native became active in Democratic politics and, during her more than 50 years in the party, served it in every capacity on the borough level, including chairman. She held elective office--two terms as a justice of the peace and one as the first woman on borough council. She also worked as a school crossing guard and meter maid for more than 20 years. Mrs. Skanderson, who was also the bookkeeper for the family's thriving auto repair business for 48 years, died Tuesday, [October 20, 1998], in the St. Barnabas Nursing Home in Richland. She was 78. "She was a remarkable person," said one of her sons, John L. Skanderson Jr. of Blawnox. "She taught us the true value and meaning of life, urged us to obey the Golden Rule and told us to honor our word." Mrs. Skanderson had an ability to accomplish a number of tasks almost simultaneously. Her son said her schedule as a crossing guard, meter maid and senior center volunteer was a good example of that. She would help children attending Blawnox Elementary School cross the street in the morning, walk half a block to the Blawnox Hoboken Senior Citizens Center to help the staff prepare for lunch, then return to her crossing guard post at noon when the children went home for lunch. After escorting the children again, she helped the senior center staff clean up from lunch, patrolled the parking meters in the area, returned to escort the children after school and went home to cook dinner. "She was always there when we needed her," said another son, Paul J. Skanderson of Springdale. "She and my dad went to all of my football and basketball games. She instilled persistence and perseverance in me, and that has really helped me as a marathon runner. "She crocheted and knitted and could duplicate something without a pattern. She loved to do crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles and enJoyed ceramics and crafts." Mrs. Skanderson, a 1938 Schenley High School graduate, did so many things that her sons weren't sure when she did what and for how long. She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 185 for more than 25 years and served in a number of offices, including president. She helped to organize the county's first VFW Blood Bank and
was active in its administration until it was dissolved. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Blawnox-Glenover Volunteer Fire Company for eight years until she resigned to take care of her mother-in-law. When the family's part-time one-car garage became more popular, she encouraged her late husband, John, a certified welder at Blaw-Knox Steel Co., to build a bigger garage. He did. She won numerous honors for her work as a crossing guard and as a senior center volunteer. She continued her senior center volunteer after moving to Adams in Butler County in 1992 until she became ill about a year ago. In addition to her sons, she is survived by a daughter, Agnes E. Moore of Mars; four sisters, Ruth Bohntinsky of Shaler, Rita O'Toole of Lawrenceville, Rosemary Pugliese of Sharpsburg and Sister Elizabeth Apel of Warren, Ohio; a brother, Edwin Apel of Atlanta; eight grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today in St. Edward Church, Walnut Street and Cable Avenue, Blawnox. Burial will be in Allegheny Cemetery." -- Obituary.
