"William Ward Payne came back to Brookville in 1919 from California to his
mother's house. He met Marie Catherine Victor who was boarding there and working
at a glove factory sewing lady's gloves. William's father Ed was dead at this
time. Marie was an orphan in a Catholic Orphan's home in New York City. She never
learned who her parents were. When she was 4 years old she was taken from the
home to PA to a Catholic Church, where a Catholic family named Fiscus took her

They were to take care of Mrs. Fiscus, the widow and Marie but hardly gave them

She was then sent out to work for a French family. She meaning the French woman
had two children, a boy and a girl, four and five yrs. old. She stayed there
about a year. She wrote and told the sisters that she wanted to leave there.
She stayed at the orphanage until she was about 19. This would have been about
1913. She was training to become a nurse. She says that about 1913 she went back
to Brookville PA and took a room in the home of Sara Burns Ostrander Payne. In
September 1 1921 when William came home from California he and Marie married.
William was a shoe cobbler and a very good one according to Marie." -- Dan
Fiscus.
