He immigrated. The immigrant Johannes Artz, father of John who first came to
Va. arrived in Phila in 1732 and lived in Berks Co. Pa. until his death in1762.
There were several other Artz innigrants who left decendants in Penna. A Johann
Jacob Artz arrived in Phila. in Sept. 17 and also lived in Berks Co. until his
death in 1793. A Johann Philip Artz emigrated from Freudenstadt in1752 with a
wife a several children. Documentation shows a Johann Phillip Artz (a nailsmith),
his wife Maria Barbara, His children, Sophia Dorothea, and Catharina Christina
age 4wks. No connection can be found between these immigrants and John or any
of the Artzes in Va. He was. The name Artz is derived from the German word
Arzt, which means "doctor" or "physician". The name appears
in German records as Arzt, Artzt, nd Arzts. It frequently appears as "Ortz
" or "orts" in Va. records because in English that spelling is
phonetidcally closer to the German pronunciation.
The early members of this family were closley associated with the Lutherian Church,
but by the early 19th century most of the Va. Artzes had become affiliated with
the "Christian" Church (Disciples of Christ).
IN MAY OF 1751 JOHANNES ARTZ ALONG WITH TWO OTHERS DONATED A PART OF HIS FARM
FOR A CHURCH, KNOWN AS THE CORNER CHURCH (ECK KIRCH IN GERMAN). He was married
