GILBERT January 08, 1841 in Shelby County, Alabama, daughter of WILLIAM GILBERT and MARY CROSS. She was born May 06, 1824 in Shelby County, AL, and died July 28, 1894 in St. Clair County, Alabama.

ILLIAM M. ASH:
Military service: Bet. 1863 - 1865, Even though his father was a slave holder until his death in 1860, William chose to join the 1st Alabama Independent Vidette Cavalry and fight for the Union. I have not yet found the army unit he and his two sons were in at the time of his death.
Namesake: He was named after his grandfather who fought for the union in the Rev. War. This may have influenced his decision in 1863 when had to choose sides as the CSA begin forced conscription.

Occupation: 1866, She continued farming and it's interesting to note that she was well known around Ashville for smoking a clay pipe. One of her pipes can be seen on display in the archives at the Ashville, AL County Courthouse.
Residence: 1866, Being left a widow by the war, she was granted William's land by Probate Court and ran the farm with 9 kids from 1-19 years at home. She was said to have been a stern woman.
