Horace Gladstone Baber (son of Arthur Erwin Baber and Lillian Estelle Mathis) was born June 30, 1911 in Converse,Spartanburg County, South Carolina3, and died March 16, 1985 in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine4. He married (1) Essie Alberta Vickery, daughter of William Walker Vickery and Alma Ida Massey. He married (2) Mildred Pauline Carmichael.

Horace was about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, medium build, black hair, grey eyes. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corp just after World War II started and served in the Pacific Theatre. He was a glider pilot in the early part of the war and later served in the Army Air Corps Administrative Group. His highest rank was Master Sargent (E-7). He left the Air Corps but later rejoined several times, the latter being the US Air Force. He retired 6/30/1963 from the Air Force at Dow Air Force Base located in Bangor, Maine. After the service, he moved to Laurens, South Carolina for a short period of time and then in late 1963 returned to his residence in Bangor, Maine. In 1964, he and Essie divorced and he remained in Bangor and she in Laurens.
