Mary Louise QUAST

was born in Oct 1871 in Featherstone, Goodhue Co., Minnesota. She died about May 1950 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., Utah. Donna Hoxie Leverich remembers that it was the spring or summer of 1950 when she was pregnant with John. She was buried at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Marie Leverich Bailey remembers that she was 78 when she died.
Mary Louise Quast came from a family of 5 children. Her parents had immigrated from Northern Germany shortly before her birth.

She met Charles in Minnesota where they were married in 1896. They had 2 children, James, born in 1897, and Bryan, born in 1904.

Her husband was an important man with the Great Northern Railroad, eventually rising to the position of General Superintendent. As a result of his job, they moved often. Mary, being somewhat of a socialite, would always seek out the nicest Protestant church in each town and would join that denomination. She was a stylish dresser and made many of her own clothes. Appearances seemed to be very important to her.

Things were not well between her and Charles, and they divorced around 1916 when their kids were 18 and 11. They were living in Great Falls at the time.

Shortly following the divorce, Mary would take young Bryan down to meet with Great Northern railroad officials in attempts to gain more child support from Charles. Perhaps partly because of this, Charles arranged to be transferred to Grand Junction, Colorado, where he was put in charge of the narrow gauge railroad.

Soon thereafter, in 1918, her eldest, James, married against her wishes. She planned to have the marriage annulled, as James was only 20, but relented when she found out that James’ wife Hylda had since become pregnant with Marie. Because of these strained relations, the newlywed couple also left the state and joined Charles in Colorado.

Mary moved with her remaining son Bryan to Missoula after the divorce. They later moved to Salt Lake in the early 1920’s so Bryan could attend law school.

After the divorce, Mary’s life was a struggle. She lived in a home close to downtown Salt Lake around 5th East, between 4th and 5th South, and would take on boarders to make ends meet.

As her eldest son Jim and his family also lived in Salt Lake, she would have them over to her house yearly for Thanksgiving. This was important to the family, as there were no other relatives nearby. She was a competent seamstress and would make her granddaughters nice dresses when their parents couldn’t afford to buy them during the Depression.

Mary never remarried. She died in Salt Lake City in 1950 at the age of 78.

She was married to Charles Edward LEVERICH about 1896. She was divorced from Charles Edward LEVERICH about 1916 in Great Falls, Cascade Co., Montana. Children were: James Perry LEVERICH Sr., Bryan Preston LEVERICH.

Amelia READ

was born on 2 Oct 1818 in North Crawley, Buckinghamshire, England. She died on 10 Dec 1896 in Ogden, Weber Co., Utah.
Amelia Read was born 2 October 1818 in North Crowley, Buckinghamshire, England, the oldest daughter and second of 11 children of William Read and Sarah Brimley. She married Henry Bailey 2 April (or 20 June) 1838; their first child, William Henry, was born 16 October 1838 in Cheshire.

In 1846 the couple was living in New Hills, Derbyshire. It was there that Amelia was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Elder Robert Martin on 30 January 1846. Her husband had joined the church five years earlier, on 3 March 1841. The couple acted as a father and mother to the missionaries.

At the time of the 1851 British Census, the family, with William, Joseph Moroni, Nephi and Lenore at home, were living in the village of Raunds.

Amelia and Henry, with their children Tryphena, Mary Ann and John, emigrated to America from London, leaving on the ship Minnesota on 4 September 1872; they settled in Ogden, Utah. Amelia and Henry were endowed 17 July 1876.

On 10 October 1896, at the age of 78, Amelia died in Ogden "without a moment’s warning" of "neuralgia of the heart" (June 1897 obituary) or "fatty degeneration of the heart" (death certificate). At that time she had a posterity of ten children, 42 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

At her death her husband wrote, "She died as she had lived, a faithful Latter-day Saint, a kind and faithful wife and devoted mother, and was beloved by all who knew her." (February 1897 obituary)
