William M. Read was born 1 October 1794 in North Crawley, Buckinghamshire, England, the youngest of eight children (four boys and four girls) born to William Read (also of North Crawley) and Lucy Robinson. The Willie Handcart Company (named after Captain James Willie) was the fourth of the five handcart companies to leave Iowa City in 1856. After some delays, the company departed on July 15 with about 500 handcart members. By the time the company left Florence, NE, on August 18, it numbered 400 actual handcart members. The others had decided to stay in Iowa or Nebraska. While crossing Nebraska, the cattle which pulled their supply wagons stampeded during a storm; traveling became much slower. Because of the loss of oxen, carts had to be overloaded to carry the provisions. The emigrants began to wear out, creating even slower progress and supplies started to run low. When the Willie Company rested near Fort Laramie on September 30, they were able to purchase only a few provisions. Rations had to be reduced. However, the Willie Company was hoping to meet supply wagons from Utah near South Pass. The weak and ill began dying with regularity, and diarist John Chislett wrote, "We soon thought it unusual to leave a campground without burying one or more persons." On October 19, the Willie Company encountered snow along the Sweetwater and met messengers from the Utah relief company near Ice Springs. That day the company traveled to the Sixth Crossing of the Sweetwater (a few miles from present-day Sweetwater Station). The same blizzard that caught the Martin Company bound the Willie Company in their camp. The last of the flour ration was given out. The morning of October 20, Captain Willie and Joseph Elder set out to find the relief company, which was itself snowbound on the Sweetwater River between Willow and Rock Creeks. The relief company, Willie, and Elder arrived back at the Willie camp the evening of October 21. Five more people had perished from cold and starvation. Food and clothing were distributed to the destitute emigrants. The following day, part of the relief company continued east to find the Martin Company. Six relief wagons remained with the Willie Company to help them to Utah. The Willie Company journeyed 11 miles to the base of Rocky Ridge and camped for the night. The morning of October 23, the Willie Company faced Rocky Ridge, a formidable barrier for worn-out cart pullers. Through the day they struggled up over the ridge and on to the Rock Creek area, a distance of 16 miles. The wind was blowing hard from the northwest and the snow was knee-deep. Joseph Elder wrote, "that was an awful day. many can never forget the seens they witnessed that day men women and children weakened down by cold and hunger weeping crying and sum even dying by the roadside." The company remained in camp the next day to bury their dead and recover from the ordeal. Six more relief wagons arrived to help. Thirteen "stiffly frozen" corpses were buried in a mass grave. Before leaving that campsite on October 25, two more were interred, including William Read. As the company moved toward Utah, more rescue teams were encountered and at last all of the Willie Company found room to ride in the wagons. With better weather and sufficient food, the Willie Company arrived in Salt Lake City on November 9, 1856. Sixty-seven members of the company's 400 people had died of exposure or starvation. Leona Betteridge's information in the Winter 1994 Newsletter increased our knowledge about Rinehart Replogle and Barbara Konig. So what do we know about them now? We know Barbara arrived at Philadelphia in 1751, and Rinehart between 1751 and 1756. We know their families lived close together in Alsace, and may well have been acquainted. It seems increasingly probable that Barbara and Rinehart came over on the same ship, though it's a mystery why his name hasn't turned up on some record. (Male immigrants over 16, for instance, were usually required to take an oath of loyalty to the British crown). We have no details of what happened between 1751 and 1756. They both undoubtedly passed through Germantown. Almost all German immigrants did. Its population was small, but more than 20 religious sects were represented there, including the German Baptist Brethren some of their children would favor. But they apparently remained (or became) Lutheran. The Konig family consisted of Abraham and Anna Maria (Weymart) and their six children (according to Annette Kunselman Burgert, Eighteenth Century Emigrants from Northern Alsace to America, 1992). Rinehart may have come alone. Or he may have been with some of those unidentified Replogles who make loose ends in the RRG. By 1756 both Rinehart and the Konigs were as far west as Hanover. That was about 50 miles from the real frontier. In the early 1750s nobody lived west of the Alleghenies--except for trappers and traders and a tiny handful of intrepid families. In fact treaties with the Indians forbade settlement out there, and the British made periodic sweeps, pushing squatters out, even burning their cabins. In 1755 the frontier moved backwards for a few years. Indian attacks forced settlers to leave homesteads and retreat east. The countryside around (today's) Hagerstown, for instance, was completely abandoned. This was just where Rinehart and Barbara would move next. But in the 1760s they lived near Littlestown, about five or six miles southwest of Hanover. (The Littles were there too.) Rinehart and his growing family stayed here for perhaps ten years, settled close to other members of the Konig clan. Then in 1766 Abraham Konig died, the family began to split up, and by 1770 Rinehart was in the Hagerstown area. (Hagerstown was laid out in 1762). This was the western edge of the settled frontier. And here he entered into a small but well established community of Germans who had begun to arrive about 20 years earlier. Among them were a number of first and second generation immigrants destined to become our ancestors. They are part of the Replogle family, since their genes are in most of us. Who were these other founders of the Rinehart Replogle family? Rinehart is our 7th Great Grandfather Parents: Philipp REPLOGLE and Anna Louisa (Replogle). He was married to Barbara KOENIG on 8 Oct 1753 in Hanover, York Co., Pennsylvania. Children were: Margaret REPLOGLE, John Philip REPLOGLE, Amos REPLOGLE, Rinehart REPLOGLE, Barbara Lovine REPLOGLE, Adam REPLOGLE, Catherine REPLOGLE, Maria Eva REPLOGLE, Miss REPLOGLE, Jacob REPLOGLE, Daniel REPLOGLE, David REPLOGLE, John REPLOGLE, George REPLOGLE, Peter REPLOGLE.
