Susannah HARTMAN

was born in 1787 in Pennsylvania. She died on 10 Nov 1869 in Saint Joseph Co., Indiana.
Probably the second of Revolutionary War John Hartman's children was Susannah Hartman. She was born in 1787 in Berks county and may have been given either the first name or middle name of her mother - Susannah Margaret or Margaret Susannah Shortley Hartman. This is unsure though.
She came with her parents to Buckhorn in Columbia county at about the age of ten. Around 1807, she married Jacob Harris. Research seems to indicate that he was the son of a Scot immigrant who had died on the voyage across the Atlantic. Jacob had probably been bound to John Hartman to help pay for the passage or to ease the financial burden on his widowed mother.
Susannah Harris and Jacob may have lived with John Hartman for a while after their marriage or lived nearby. There is a possibility that they lived just to the north of Buckhorn in Greenwood township. Around 1815, they moved to Stark county in Ohio. In the spring of 1829, Jacob again moved to an area of St. Joseph county in Indiana not far from South Bend and Mishawaka and put in a wheat crop. His family soon followed. This area was called Harris Prarie and the township named Harris township after this pioneering family.
Susannah's children were John Harris, Sarah Harris, James Harris, Permilla Harris, William Harris, Thomas McLaughlin Harris, Jacob Harris, Hannah Harris, Eliza Harris, George Harris, D. Wayne Harris, and possibly Marcus Harris. Needless to say, there are many Harris descendants today!
Jacob Harris died on March 5, 1860 in Harris Prarie. Susannah Harris followed him on November 10, 1869. They were well known as kind and caring pioneers who hosted many travelers and opened up a new area of the western frontier.

Sarah HATFIELD was born in 1779 in New York. She died on 12 May 1852 in Linn Co., Iowa.

She was married to James LEVERICH on 31 Dec 1799 in Yorktown, New York. Children were: Joel LEVERICH , William LEVERICH, Ira LEVERICH , John LEVERICH, Susan LEVERICH , Charles LEVERICH, Julia LEVERICH , James LEVERICH, Asbury LEVERICH .

Barbara HUNTER

She received a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Art in Jun 1970 from University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. She was an Advertising Artist. Parents: Ross A. HUNTER and Thora Rodello HICKEN.

She was married to James Stephen BAILEY on 6 Jun 1970 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., Utah. She was divorced from James Stephen BAILEY on 3 Jan 1981 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., Utah. He met Barbara Hunter in Spring 1969 while working part time for his father's advertising business. They were married on June 6, 1970. They lived numerous places in the following years while Jim finished college on the GI Bill.

They bought a home on 1352 Sherman Avenue in Salt Lake in June 1974. Cost was $31,000.

Emma Louise HYDE

was born on 27 Nov 1879 in Levan, Juab Co., Utah. She died on 6 Jul 1954 in Monticello, San Juan Co., Utah.
Emma Louise Hyde was 3rd born in a Mormon family of 10 children in a farming settlement called Chicken Creek, which is near Levan in central Utah.

Emma’s family moved a couple of times in her early years. Her parents appeared to have met and married in Salt Lake City. They then moved to Chicken Creek where Emma was born. When she was about 4, they moved to Honeyville in northern Utah between Tremonton and Brigham City. Emma’s mother, also named Emma, was originally from Brigham City. When she was 8, they moved to Bluff, Utah.

The next year, in April 1888, they moved to the beginning of Monticello in southeastern Utah. They were the second group to arrive as a family unit. Here Louise spent her life except for four years in Logan following her marriage to Charles E. Walton Jr., January 28, 1896.

In her girlhood, she knew the rigors of pioneer life in a country overrun by outlaws. Through the years, she became a part of Monticello's development.

Emma’s family lived down the street from the Walton family in Monticello. Emma met and fell in love with Charles, who was 12 years older than her, when she was only 15. They married shortly after she turned 16. Shortly thereafter, they had their first child, whom they named Pearl. They had four more children, Jean, Ila, Olive, and Bill. She also assisted with the rearing of three grandchildren of her daughter Olive Allen, who preceded her in death.

Emma’s husband was an important person in the Monticello community. He was one of the original settlers in the region, having come through the Hole In The Rock when he was a child of 11. He served as the town’s postmaster through most of his adult life and was active in the local Mormon ward, serving as Bishop for 3 years. They lived in one of the nicer 2-story homes in Monticello.

As Monticello was still very much a frontier town, the town had its share of interesting characters, including real cowboys and Indians. Emma had a knack for getting along with the native people. The local Indian chief, Old Wash, whose anglicized name was Washington, would always make it a point to visit Emma when he was in town. On one such occasion, the Waltons had just installed electric lights. When Emma flipped the switch to show the old Indian, it literally scared the Hell out of him.

Her flowers and shrubs made her home a place of beauty. Each Sunday her flowers decorated the LDS Chapel. She was a practical nurse and was the first to offer assistance in time of death, birth, or sickness.

She was an active member of the LDS Church. She was ward Relief Society President and on the Relief Society Stake Board. An expert seamstress, she was always in demand as a member of the society's work and burial committees, positions she held for many years.

Emma and Charles had a long and happy marriage, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 1947. Charles died a year later in Monticello, at the age of 79. Emma lived for another 7 years and died in Monticello in 1954 at the age of 74 after a lingering illness..
