 Includes NotesNotes for John Gray:
from an Email by David Gray:

The best possible birth date that I can establish is 1--th ( 2nd figure illegible) 1761, in Cumberland County, PA and in 1779 he moved to Washington Co (later Greene) Pa. Names of his parents not known. John enlisted, Place not Stated in the Spring of 1780, served three years as private in Captain James Archer's company, under Colonel William Crawford and Henry Enoch's, in the Pa. Troops, and was Stationed at Fort Jackson, Greene Co, Pa.

He served one month in 1785, Indian spy, no office rank stated, and Feb 24-1792, he was appointed by Governor Thomas Mifflin, Lieutenant of 1st Company of Rifleman of the Militia of Pa. said company commanded by Captain James Paul and served six months at the Wheeling Block (ice) House.

John Gray was allowed pension on his application executed 9-10-1832 at which time he was living in Rich Hill twp, Greene Co. Pa. A William Gray was with him when he applied for the Pension and said, "that he(John) had known William Gray ever since he ( John ) moved to Greene Co, Pa, but didn't state any relationship. John stated that his brothers David and Matthew were also out with him as Indian Spy's and that Matthew was Killed. John lists a James Seals, Ellis Bane, and William Gray as people that can verify his Identity.

All of the above I wrote is an abstract.

This is a sample of what was really wrote;
That he was born at near Carlisle in the county of Cumberland State of Pennsylvania on the 17th day of January 1761. Deponent has his fathers Bible in which his age is set down. That he in the year of 1779 he moved from Cumberland county, Pennsylvania into the then Washington now Greene county State affirms that in the spring of 1780 deponent was called out and forted at Fort Jackson, county last affirmed and continues forted there six years.

The document was wrote with an ink pen that you dip in ink. A lot of dates are hard to read as the ink smeared. I read John's birth date as 1-17-1761. I am going by what his father wrote in the Bible and believe that to be most correct of anything ever printed. I believe John opened the Bible and showed the clerk so it could be verified.

His pension Number was S.23669
certificate # 11457
Issued 5-08-1833
Rate $80.00 per Year
Commenced 3-04-1831
Act of 6-07- 1832
Pennsylvania Agency
John died 8-09-1834

Now the DAR Patriot Index- Centennial Edition Lists John Gray as Follows:

John: b 2-18-1761 PA d 8-19-1834 PA m Bythinia Bane PVT PA PNSR.

The above is why I have a lot of trouble look at John's Birth date. He ( John ) and his father's Bible have him being born in January 1761. The State Pension fund has him dying on 8-09-1834. DAR has him dying 8-19-1834. b 2-18-1761

  2. Mary Gray, b. March 15, 1793, d. date unknown.
