Clair Baldwin was born in a small house on Holland Lake Road just north of Sheridan, Michigan. Born on Sept. 2, 1898. His parents are James Stanley Baldwin and Nellie Francis Williams. When he was little boy, their house burned to the ground. So the family move to a house just north of the old burned down house, about a mile or two, which was on highway 66 on the same side of the road. They lived next to a school house. I think the school name was Wearthwax School.
When Clair was about 8 years old his father past away. So he lived with his mother for about two years with out a father. Then his mother married Rutherford Starks. So they moved in with Mr. Starks just south of and, in between the last two house they lived in. It was on the opposite side of the road. After a few years, Rutherford bought a house in Sheridan. He still own the old house on 66. Clair and Tressie were married on Jan. 24,1923 in Stanton, Michigan. The witnesses where, Beatrice Baldwin, the grooms sister, and Clayton Baldwin, the grooms bother. The Ordained Minister was John A Ross. They first lived in a tenants house on his wife's, Tressie, Grandfather Patterson's farm which was on the south side of Sheridan. Clair was working at the Carnation Milk Plant right across from Grandpa Patterson. There first child was Fern Baldwin, did not live more than a few days. Then it was James Clair Baldwin born to the couple. Then Clair moved to Muskegon, Michigan to try to find better work. He work at a furniture factory. They kept laying him off so he moved back to Sheridan. There daughter Beth was born while living in the town of Muskegon, Michigan. Marcella Baldwin was born after there return to Sheridan. After he moved back to Sheridan, he got his old job back at the Carnation Milk Plant. His job, for 33 years was working at the Carnation Milk Plant just south of Sheridan. Everybody call it the Condenser.
After the moved back, he rented about 7 different house before he bought one. He bought a wooden two story house. Clair built a new house right in back. It was made of cement blocks. After he finished the new house he tore down the old one.
Clair loved to work with wood. He made this his hobby and made some money for his work. He had a big two and a half car garage that he did all his wood working in. He had all kinds of wood working tools. He would built wooden games, cabinets, lamps, and just about anything out of wood. Clair did not finish school so he taught himself everything he knew out of books. I would help him once in awhile. Grandpa made me a wooden lamp, that I still have.
I, Martin Baldwin, remember his kindness he had with every one. He was always helping. I never saw my Grandpa get made. He was great.
