"WHAT I KNOW ABOUT"
JAMES CLAIR BALDWIN
by MARTIN BALDWIN { Son }

He was born James Clair Baldwin on the farm of William Patterson, to Clair William Baldwin and Tressie Morey. His mother and dad where living in the tenets house at that time. William Patterson was Tressie Grandfather. William Patterson farm was on the south side of Sheridan. As a young boy he played on that farm. He told me a story about Grandpa Patterson putting grease on his fingers and wrapping them with cloth so he would stop sucking his fingers. I am not sure when the family moved off the farm. His family moved all around Sheridan, from the north of the town, to the middle of town. When he lived on the north side of Sheridan, a few miles out of town, he told me he would give his sister, Marcella, a ride on his bicycle to go into town. He also told of his mother having TB. She was in a hospital for TB for over a year. During that time he lived with his Grandmother who just lived down the road. His mother came home cured of TB.
Then his life was interrupted by WWII. In Jan. 1944 he was drafted in to the army. In July, 1944 through May, 1945 he fought in the European theater, in the Rhineland Battles. He was in prison camp from Jan. 1945 - April, 1945. He was discharged from the army Dec. 1945.
The story he told me about going in to the army is this: He did not start his Senior year in school because he was deferred for working on a potato farm, planting and harvesting potatoes in the summer of 1943. The owners named was Bill Sandern of Stanton, Michigan. A town just north of Sheridan. He only made $200.00 that summer. He said he was not very happy about that. He worked to Nov. 1. But when he was let go, he had to sign up for the draft. He was 18 years old. He was then called for a physical in Jan 1944 he was19. He went to Greenville, Michigan for his blood test first. That town was very close. Then he had to take a train to Detroit, Michigan for the rest of his physical. He was called into the army on Feb. 9,1944. For more on his time in the army see THE ARMY STORY.
When he came back from the army he married Dolores Maxine Misner, who just lived down the road from him. Her parents are Earl Raymond Misner and Marian Genevieve Griggs. They where married on the day of Feb. 24, 1951. The wedding took place in Dolores parents home. They bought a house on 327 East Grant Street, Sheridan, Michigan. The house was just a few blocks from both of their parents. Jim and Dolores lived there all their lives. James and Dolores had two sons. Martin Lee Baldwin, born Nov. 7, 1953 (thats me) and Jack Ray Baldwin, May 14, 1955. They where good boys. James Baldwin was a very quiet and calm person. He would help you with anything if you asked. He always made sure his family was taken care of. James liked things that where a little different. He liked all the new and different technologies that came out. He also liked to go to car, boat, home shows. He want to buy a boat some day, but he did not get to. He also had very nice cars all his life. He worked most of his life time in factory.
James Baldwin accomplish at least three major events in his life. One: he fought for his Country. Two: he did his best to take care of his family. Three: he took care of his wife during her last days. His wife became very sick with Lou Gehrig disease. He helped her for the rest of her life. She past away on April 27, 1991. She was 58 years old. He had a heart attack during his last years of working in the factory but recovered from that attack. Then it was about a year later, just after Christmas, he pasted away of a stroke on Feb. 19, 1992, he was 67 years old.
