"Ambrose Barnett had a 24-mile mail route out of Fleming for $500 a year, and ran a farm as well, with the help of his sons. He carried the mail in a horse-drawn cart in summer and on horseback in winter. He instilled a respect for hard work, independence and education in his four sons, and they all were college-educated...

"When Tom Cleary was quarrying on the upper slopes of Squaw Hollow in 1905-6, he accumulated a stack of stones and could find no one to haul them out. John Cleary suggested he see Brose Barnett. He did and Barnett took the contract for $1/ton, and talked his son into fulfilling it...."
