FOURTH GENERATION
123. Joseph BARNETT
was born on
20 Jul 1886 in Barnett Ridge, Barlow Township, Washington County, Ohio. He died
on 14 Aug 1986 in Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia at the Camden Clark
Hospital. He was buried on 18 Aug 1986 in Barnett Ridge, Barlow Township, Washington
County, Ohio in the Barnett Ridge Cemetery. He belonged to the Barnett Ridge
Wesleyan Church where he was treasurer.. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias,
the Elk Valley Lodge 54 of Hinton, West Virginia. Joseph went to work when he
was 15, logging above Lowell. His grandfather {James Stevens} and uncle, John
Stevens, owned a portable mill. To obtain a high school education he lived with
grandfather Stevens near Camp Hervida, logging with a yoke of oxen and walking
to school at Waterford a distance of 3.5 miles.
He graduated from the commercial college in Marietta and went to Weston, West
Virginia, as a bookkeeper and then to Charleston where he kept books for the
Knights of Pythias for three years.
Joseph returned to Barnett Ridge and began hauling coal into the quarries and
stone out for $3 a day, team and man. Compared to $1.25 a day for the men working
in the quarries, this looked pretty good. He recalled hauling a 5-ton stone
from the quarry near McAvan to the railroad station. This stone was about 6
feet in diameter and 3 feet thick, and was the largest one he hauled. There
weren't many stones quarried out of the McAvan quarry but they were large. The
McAvan quarry was opened after the Tretchell quarry in Tunnel. There is no lease
recorded for this quarry, nor is there one for the short-lived quarry on the
Ransom place at the corner of Barlow Township Road 267 and County Road 27. Dick
Ransom leased the land to the Cleveland Stone Company, and Joseph Barnett hauled
stones from there up over the ridge to Henry's Crossing. He carries to his grave
a scar where a horse kicked him on a trip out of that quarry. He was married
to Lucy Jane MALE (daughter of Reverend Henry MALE and
Mary L. SELLERS) on 10 Jul 1909 in Marietta, Marietta Township, Washington
County, Ohio. Rev. and Mrs. Henry Male of Vincent celebrate their fiftieth wedding
anniversary Saturday, December 2, 1933. The weather was ideal for the occasion
and many participated in the affair. At noon a delicious dinner was enjoyed.
