BATHER IS DROWNED IN DUCK CREEK: Harry Barnett Loses Life While Swimming Near Whipple Bridge. Companions Are Unable To Aid.

Stepping into a deep hole while bathing in Duck Creek at 7:15 Tuesday evening, Harry F. Barnett, 18, employee of the Barnett Construction Company, drowned while four of his companions, unable to swim, stood on the bank, helpless. Barnett, who is believed to have suffered an attack of cramps, sank from view without an outcry. His body was recovered thirty minutes later.

Barnett, who is the son of T.D. Barnett, of Fleming, has been employed on the road grading above Whipple. Immediately after supper, the boy, with a cousin, Emmett Barnett, and Virgil Sams, Dennis Honesty and Bernard Barnett, walked down the creek to Snyder's Bend, where there is a deep swimming hole.

Steps Into Hole. Barnett, who could swim a little, was the first in the water. He waded out only a short distance from shore, stepped into the hole and disappeared from view. When he did not come to the surface his companions rushed back to the camp and notified other workmen of the accident.

Carl Male, H. D. Wadaker and George Wadaker hurried to the stream and disrobing began diving for the body. Male was successful in one of his attempts and brought up the victim. In the meantime a call had been sent to Marietta for the pulmotor and Patrolman Leonard Kelly took it to the scene. A doctor from Warner was called and every effort was made to resuscitate the man but all effort proved unavailing.
