He died from third degree burns over forty percent of his body from an accident which occured while he was pouring coal oil on a fire. He was buried on 3 Nov 1958 in Athens County, Ohio, in the Mount Herman Cemetery.

He was married to Bessie BROWN (daughter of Frank BROWN and Mary Elizabeth KENNEDY). Bessie BROWN was born on 6 May 1890. She died on 7 Apr 1970. She was buried on 10 Apr 1970 in Athens County, Ohio, in the Mount Herman Cemetery. Howard CROSTON and Bessie BROWN had the following children:
