Our family history in this country began with the arrival of my great-grandparents, Michael Hughes and Anne Connelly Hughes from County Armagh in Ireland. They came by sailing vessel, I would think about the time of the Angora Mar (the Great Famine)in Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century. They settled in New York City. Their twelve children included my grandmother, Catherine Hughes Barrett, my grandaunts - Alice Hughes Lindsey & Margaret Hughes - who raised me when my mother died, and Charles Hughes their youngest brother, who was part of the household where I grew up.
My grandmother, Catherine Agnes Hughes, married my grandfather, William Matthew Barrett, when she was 15 years old...in 1877.They had six children, of whom my father, Edward Francis Barrett, was the youngest boy. He married my mother, Mary Spillane, on New Year's Eve 1918, and they had three children, William Matthew Barrett, Mary Cecilia Barrett, and Edward Francis Barrett Jr.
I am in the process of beginning to research our family in Ireland and also in this country.
