(4618) was born on 24 Dec 1166.
He Crowned on 27 May 1199. He was buried in 1216 in Worcester. He died on
19 Oct 1216. fifth son of King Henry II and his wife Eleanor, having succeeded
in prejudice of his Brother Geoffrey's son Arthur, who was slain in prison 1202,
upon which King John was summoned to answer for his death by the King of France,
but not appearing he was comdemed to lose all his dominions in France, and accordingly
was dispossessed of them 1205. Refusing Cardinal Langton to be Archbishop of
Canterbury 1207, the Kingdom was interdicted 1208, the King excommunicated 1210
and his Kingdom given to the King ofFrance 1213; but John submitting to the Pope,
the King of France was not allowed to pursue his grant. In 1214, the Barons
forced John to renew Magna Carta and Charta de Foresta, which the Pope made null
and excommunicated the Barons, who on the other hand broughrt in Louis the Dauphin
of France and swore allegiance to him, but that took no effect, for King John
died of grief (some say he was poisoned with a dish of pears by a monk). He
had two wives (1) Isabel, dau. of William, Earl of Gloucester, whom he divorced;
(2) Isabel, dau. and heiress of Aymer de Taillefer, Count of Angoulesme, whom
he m. in 1210, and who, after King John's death was m. to Hugh le Brun, Earl
of March. His eldest son by his second wife was HENRY III. (YFT, pp.81-82).
