SEVENTH GENERATION

122. Capt. Nathaniel ABNEY was born on 4 Apr 1734. He died on 29 Jul 1806 in Edgefield, Co., S.C.. He was buried in Edgefield Co. S.C, Old Farm Land. He was Capt. of Rangers under Cole. Thompson, 1775, & at siege of Ninety Six. (DAR).
Information on their children found in Old Southern Bible Records, Lester, Gen. Pub. Co., Inc. 1974. Note says,"This Bible record sent to compiler by Mrs. Flossie Lamb Crouch, Edgefield, SC." Under John Abney and before Paul Abney, was this note: "[Second owner John Abney Chapman, SC, Historian. Present owner Framl W. Chapman, 704 N. St. Greenwood, SC}" Nathaniel's ch. listed under Paul Abney. COLONIAL FAMILIES OF U.S.says Nathaniel Abney descend. of Dannett, bap. at St. Mary's, 26 Feb. 1659, came over to America with step-bro, John Lee, 1692, m. Mary. NOTE: It would then appear that he must be g.f. of Capt. Nath. Anbley.
Since DAR lists him as Rev. Soldier, it would indicate there is a more complete record of his war service available in S.C. and U.S. Archives, for those who wish to see them. This researcher may at some point attempt to gather and record them. (TEB)

John Collier seems to have been father of Nancy Collier who m. Joshua HIGHTOWER, my gt.gt. grandfather, b. GA, lived in Randolph Co. 1850-60, CSA Capt. Home Guard, moved to Erath Co. TX. d. after 1880 census. So the Turner-Trammel-Hicks-Jefferies- Hightowr-Abney familes intermarried, and seem to have known each other from early times in Virginia, S.C, and GA. I have a copy of will of Henry Turner of Putnam Co. Ga of 13 Apr. 1826, p. 12, Jan 1829, wife Jane and sons Archibald & Samuel, daus. Abigail McNatt, Nanc, Mary and grandson Green(?) Turner. Exc. Archibald.
(Tom Barton 11-98). He was married to Isabella MADISON on 15 Apr 1758 in ca VA.

123. Isabella MADISON was born on 17 Sep 1740. Note Isabel Madison m. Nathaniel Abney, S.C. Capt. in the Rangers, under Col. Thompson during 1775. He was in Williamson's Expedition and was at the siege of Ninty Six. See DAR Index,; Bible records say she was 1/2 sister of Bishop James Madison. Vol. I, Am. of Gent. Birth, p. 110, states JOHN MADISON, m. (2) Agnes Strother. Their son James Madison, long time Pres. William and Mary College, Bishop--Engand and VA. Virginia Will Records, states, "James Madiosn, son of John Madison" (III), long Co. clerk & Burgess for Augusta Co., was b. 27 Aug. 1749, at Port Republic, d. 5 Mar. 1812 at Williamsburg, VA; John Madison m. 1st.---. Elizabeth, (Isabella) was reared by the Strother family. It was this family who objected to her marriage to NATH. ABNEY.
PEDIGREE CHART OF MADISON FAMILY
A photo of the original pedigree chart of the Madison family, prepared by James Madison, President of the United States, appears in Wm. & Mary Q. "the original is in possession of Mrs. Mary Madison McGuire of Washington City. The chart begins with John Madison, Gt. Gr. father of the President, but the line goes back one step further, to John Madison, gt.gt. gr.father--. The Bulk of the infuential men in Virginia at the time, wre composed of merchants from English cities and ship captains. To this class belonged the First John Madison, --who in a patent dated Sept. 1682, calles himself 'Ship Carpenter,-- He had the following grants; 1858, 300 acres in Westmoreland Co.; 1653, 600 acres on North side of Mattapony River, --- In Sept. 1682---of 'Saint Stephen Parish, New Kent.' He died before Apr. 16, 1683, since at that time John Madison, Jr., patened--part thereof 300 acres, 'formerly granted to John Madison, Sr., deceased'.
This John Madison was sheriff of King and Queen co. in 1704. There is a deed on record in King William Co., dated 1706, from John Madison, of St. Stephens Parish, K.& Q Co., and ISABELLA his wife. There is of King William Co. (cut from K.& Q., in 1701). John Madison & Isabella (Todd) his wife, had issue. (1) Ambrose (g.f. of Pres.) (2) Capt. John".
The Andrea file, p. 23, A&B, shows John Madison, (Jr) m. ISABELLA MINOR TODD. to the right he has listed "Elizabeth?" Ambrose (the ? is his). He erred in assuming that her mother was an Ambrose, and that she had been married to a Minor. Proof of this is found in Emperor Charlemagne's Descendants, v. II, Gen.Pub. Co., Inc., p. 178. "Isabella Todd, youngest child, b. in VA 1670; m. John Madison II, was dau of Ann Gousuch, b. at Walkern, Herts, Eng., Mar. 13, 1638/9, d. at 'Toddsbury,' Gloucester Co., VA, between May 24, 1694 and Nov. 10, 1697; m.(1) CAPT. THOMAS TODD, b. at Denton Co, Durham, Eng., d. at sea, 1676; He came to VA Feb. 22, 1653; m.pr. 30 May 1677, Ann Gorsuch, dau. of Rev. John & and Ann Lovelace Gorsuch, D.D. Ann dau of Sir William Lovelace, Knt. & Anne Barnes; The trace goes on to Charlemagne and of course beyond.
Tradition says that Isabella's foster parents did not want her to marry Nathaniel, so they married in Virginia and ran away, by horse-back to the Carolinas. Ltc. Roger D. Donathan (Ret.) of Augusta GA also a descendant of the Bolgers, said that if they could have caught them, they probably would have hung Abney. They were however married by Rev. Patrick Henry.
