SEVENTH GENERATION

96. Joshua HIGHTOWER RS was born on 11 Jun 1741 in Richmond Co., VA. He died about 1844. Son of Charnell and Sarah Glas(s)cock Hightower, according to the North Faraham Parish Refgister, recorded in Richmond Co., VA. The marriage of Joshua's parents and the births of their six other children were recorded there as well.
Joshua Hightower, Marengo, Co., AL. R.S. Application: The original is difficult to read, but a letter of 22 Sep. 1939 was enclosed, which was written to Mrs. E.D. Turner, 1208 So. Main St. Cedertown, GA. (it is VERY interesting to me because she was a Turner. One of mother's acnestors was Thomas Trammell, (R.S.) from GA and NC, who died in AL. Joshua said he came from Brunswick VA, to Wilks Co., GA, and then on to Marengo Co,, AL, but said he had made application earlier through a lawyer who died and he had no other word from the application.
From National Arcives (NNMS), 7 Dec. 1984, his record was sent to me. Of special inerest to me, was the statement that he served under General LaFayett, in Captain Frederick Lucas' VA comapny, in the battle of Jamestown, and --Captain Thomas Jones in the VA Troops, was at the siege of YORKTOWN and surender of CORNWALLIS, after which he marched as a guard to the prisoners taken at Yorktown, as far as the Shenandoah River, near Winchester, VA. His pension certificate #31835. He lived in Wilkes Co., GA until 1819, then moved to Marengo Co. Al.
Also of special intetest is the fact that JOHN COLLIER--a clergy and Benjamine G. Shields certified that "we are well acquainted---and believe he has been a soldier of the Revolution---" The importance of John Collier's signature indicates he may have been close kin or grand-father of NANCY COLLIER, who m. JOSHUA HIGHTOWER, of Randolph Co., AL, his grandson, who came on to MS, AK, and on to TX, where he died. A John Collier, Minister, lived near Joshua, in TX. Joshua's eldest son William was named Merrill. This was one of the names of a Collier in GA and perhaps AL.
Joe Moore, of Hampton GA, wrote me 14 July 1988, "So I would correct Hazel's (Hazle Hightower Smith) chart on RS Joshua Hightower--leaving just the three proven children of RS Joshua --POLLY,, who m. Jordan Anderson, THOMAS HIGHTOWER,and Mrs. Joshua Elder".
For more of Joshua and his descendants see FROM VIRGINIA WITH LOVE, Thomas E. Barton and Joshua Hightower, Thomas E. Barton, Marion E. Hightower, and Carl M. Stewart. . He was married to Mary POLLY "PUCKETT"?.

97. Mary POLLY "PUCKETT"?. The only name I found in my research was POLLY. The last I heard, some researchers were guessing it was Puckett. I hope to find who decided to name her Puckett, and where they got the information. Just because her first dau. m. John Puckett Hightower is not sufficient reason to give her the name PUCKETT. (Tom Barton, 4-4-1998). Children were:

child48 i. Thomas HIGHTOWER.
child ii. Polly HIGHTOWER was born in 1771. First two children are unnamed daughters.

child iii. Minerva HIGHTOWER was born in 1774 in NC. She died before 1812 in Wilks Co., GA. m. Joshua Elder.
