184. William DANDRIDGE II was born on 29 Dec 1689 in Hampshire, England. He died in 1743 in Home Esling Green, King William Co., VA. Capt. of two different English ships, and was Army Major, VA Militia, 1777-1778. See From Virginia With Love for more infomation.
Campbell, Spotswood Family, p. 27 states, " Captain Dandridge died while on a visit there, and was buried at the seat of Captain Nathaniel West Dandridge". 'There' referrs to: "William Dandridge---, and located lands on Allen's creek, in Hanover county, VA. (confusing ?) TEB.
Robert J. Dandridge, Jr., 1801 Robindale Road, Richmond VA 23235, wrote the Office of Officer Personnel Records, Royal Navy, London, England on Mar. 31, 1987, for information "concerning three ancestors-" which included Willliam Dandridge, b. 29 Dec. 1689, son of John and Ann Dandridge, along with that of Nathaniel West Dandridge, and Nathaniel West. Answer: "We do not have a lot of details regarding William Dandridge: he became a Lieutenant on 20 Oct. 1709, a Commander 11 April 1738 and Captain on 19 Feb. 1741. His death is variously quoted as 27 Aug. 1744 and 17 Oct. 1747." It is understandable why one record was 'Aug. 27, 1744', since a copy of log of the ship Mary Galley, shows 'Dandridge paid off 16 July 1744 27 Aug. 1744 'Dead'."
Diana Allen added a note: "said in some records 'was sick on his ship for two weeks with stomach ailment'--possibly food poisoning." She also wrote: "Mark Wilborn sent to the English Navy --and found out tht Wm. was made an admiral in HRMS Navy and died aboard his ship. He was sick for two weeks--he was in London Harbor." My record show he died 1743 Home Esseling Green, King William Co., VA. The ship record showing him dead Aug 1744, would probably next date to have been paid, were he still alive. TEB.
He was married to Lady Unity WEST in 1719 in King William Co. VA.
