Thomas Bates(39) a Miner of Newthorpe Common was killed dur ing a heavy storm by Lightning on the 12 June leaving a wid ow, Lily Bates, and six children.

Mr Herbert Bradwell, Coroner, at a hearing on the 14 June h eard that the deceased in company with David Henry Gibson , of Hampden Street, Giltbrook were walking home at about 1 0.30p.m.

Gibson related that they had just passed over a style and s uddenly there was an almighty flash and he knew no more. O n regaining consciousness he realised what had happened an d called for assistance. He likened the experience to an Ar tillery Shell exploding.

P.C. J Hindley was called to the scene at approximately mid night and found that deceased's clothing was burned from th e chest down to the left side of his boot which was split o pen. Flesh had been burnt from the chin down to the left so le of his boot. A silver watch and chain were fused wit h a hole in the outer case of the watch.

The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with Medical o pinion that Death was due to "Suffocation after having been struck by Lightning. "
