Notes for F
RANCES "FANNY" MORRIS:
In the 1860 census for Grayson County, Texas, Fanny is living with her children J.W., Robert and Nancy. Sadly, in the far right margin she is listed as "insane."

Marriage Notes for J
OHN FRANCIS and FRANCES MORRIS:

Notes for J
OHN MORRIS:
John and Jane Morris are buried in Hall's Cemetery near Healdsburg, California. The cemetery is not being tended to, and most headstones are hidden by dense brush, including poison oak. Kathy Beaudry visited the cemetery in 2001 and was unable to locate the headstones for John and Jane. However, she was able to obtain a photo of the markers from a cousin. Others have visited since, and found the headstones.
In the 1830 census, John Morris was in Monroe County, Kentucky. He then moved to Cole County, Missouri in 1831. John and his family also lived at one time in Morgan County, Missouri, which was later divided to form part of Moniteau County. They lived there for about 16 years. The family left Missouri, and came to the Sacramento California area, in 1849, before moving to Sonoma County, California around 1856. In the 1850 census, they were living in Cache Creek Township in Yolo County, California.

The following information was sent to me from the research of Peggy Chadsey in May of 2000, from her own research

From HISTORY OF YOLO COUNTY FROM 1825-1880:
(explanatory comments are in brackets)

Page 26 - John Morris, of 1849 . . .

Page 34 - John Morris - known as 'Uncle John,' a Kentuckian - came in November with his family from Missouri, and built a long-house on the south side of the creek, about one and a half miles up the stream from Cochran's. In 1851, he moved to the vicinity of Woodland, and owned a Part of what is now the town site. [The creek mentioned is probably Cache Creek]

Page 36 - James Morris came. [no date]

Page 40 - The grazers were in the habit of meeting the overland emigrants in the mountains and buying their cattle before they had reached their destination. W. Y. Browning and John Morris made a trip of this kind in August, 1852, and purchased a number at prices ranging from $40-50 ahead.

Page 45 - Uncle John Morris is said to have been the first to set grape-vines in the soil of Yolo County. In the Spring of 1853 he had about two acres. In two years the amount had doubled . . .

Page 58 - Uncle John Morris, an old man, a pioneer of 1849 . . .
[from a sermon by Rev. Thomas A. Ish, preaching the first sermon on his property] Uncle John says, "I remember distinctly, that it was remarked at the the time that it was the first." (grape vines in Yolo County)

Page 76 - [1861] Residing here at the time who were heads of households . . . Rev. Joshua Lawson, B. C. Lawson, J. D. Lawson . . . on the west side lived James Morris. East of the present town lived . . . J. Hollingsworth.

Peggy Chadsey also told me, "The Woodland Chamber of Commerce sent me a brief history, and in it was the following:

"The Kentuckian 'Uncle Johnny' Morris settled on what is now the corner of First and Clover streets. He was followed two years later by Henry Wyckoff, who built a store he called 'Yolo City' to supply the needs of a growing number of farmers in the vicinity."

from the Internet, www.newspaperabstracts.com/CA/sonoma/1880JUL.html
      Russian River Flag:

"Died near Healdsburg, Jul. 3, 1880, John MORRIS, aged 77y. Native of KY., but came from Missouri to California in 1849; leaves nine children and many friends."
