Searching for BECK in Colonial Virginia and England before 1755. Rev. John Beck was born in Virginia in 1755. He claimed to be the son of an Englishman. He is my Great-Great-Grandfather. I am trying to establish his place of birth and to find any of his siblings and ancestors. I also would be happy to find any present day descendants. Rev. Beck was a Presbyterian minister. In the late 1700s, he was assigned to North Carolina and then to upper Georgia (Chatham) and lower South Carolina (then Beaufort District, now Jasper County). He continued his ministry in South Carolina until his death In about the 1790s he purchased a ferry service and landings on the Savannah River with the South Carolina landing located about 6 miles northwest of Hardeeville, SC. The SC site of Beck's Ferry Landing is now owned and maintained by the State of South Carolina. Rev. Beck also had a Rice Plantation in the region, at Black Swamp. His lands totaled between 22,000 and 23,000 acres, mostly in South Carolina. The balance of his land holdings (about 1200 acres) were in Georgia. He died at his Black Swamp Plantation in 1818. He is buried in the Huguenin Cemetery on Roseland Plantation, near present day Grahamville, SC. Next to him is his wife Ann Huguenin Beck. Three of their children are buried adjacent and nearby. His first marriage was to Sophia Lewis, and probably took place in Georgia about 1790. This union resulted in one male child being born. Rev. Beck's last marriage in 1799 was to Ann Huguenin Myers, the widow of Col. John Myers. She had two female children by Col. Myers. Rev. Beck and Ann's union produced eight children, four males and four females. Ann is my Great-Great-Grandmother. Any information you may supply would be greatly appreciated. Several members of the last three generations of our family have been unable to find anything about our ancestors preceding Rev. John Beck. I am willing to share whatever I have with others I like finding cousins. Please refer to the following reports. The first gives descendants of my 10th Great Grandfather, Jean Pierre Huguenin. The others give Rev. Beck's descendants. LAST UPDATED 8-18-1999 |
