OSIAH BECK:
Source of information: Schedule I of the St. Bartholomews Parish District of Colleton, South Carolina, 1850.
Value of the estate was listed as $9650.00.

According to the 1875 Autobiography of Capt. Abram Huguenin, C.S.A., Josiah married Miss. Ford whose mother was a Burnett, and moved to Colleton County, where he died leaving a large family.

COLLETON, a district in the S. part of South Carolina, bordering on the Atlantic, has an area of 1672 square miles, It is intersected by the Edisto, bounded on the S. W. by the Combahee, and also drained by the Salkehatchie and Ashepoo rivers. The surface consists of an alluvial and extremely level plain, and is partly occupied by swamps. The soil of the drier parts is productive. Rice, cotton, Indian corn, sweet potatoes, and oats are the staples. The palmetto and cabbage-palm are indigenous in this part of the state. In 1850 this district produced 45,308,660 pounds of rice; 6592 bales of cotton; 480,934 bushels of corn; 403,374 of sweet potatoes, and 36,065 of oats. There were 8 saw and planing mills, and 2 tanneries. It contained 44 churches, 64 pupils attending public schools, and 230 attending academies or other schools. It is intersected by the South Carolina railroad, and is among the most populous districts in the state. Capital, Waterborough. Population, 39,505, of whom 7734 were free, and 31,771, slaves.
New and Complete Gazetteer of the U.S. (1854), p.261

In Colleton County, Josiah purchased a large plantation, Green Meadows, probably from the Fishburne family. It is located south-ease of Walterboro, SC. I visited the plantation house in 1997 with my brother (George). A picture of the old place is in the scrapbook of this record. It is now owned by WESTVACO, and 2183 acres remain of the original plantation. I don't know the extent of the original. Beck's landing is located on the Edisto River front with the property. In the book "The Fishburne Family of South Carolina" by Henry G. Fishburne, page60, it is stated that Richard H. Fishburne (was) living at Green Meadows Plantation. On page 94, ibid, Richard Henry Fishburne is said to bave been born about 1788 and to have died in Walterboro, S.C. Sept. 5, 1822. This same record also states that Richard and his wife Martha Elizabeth Postell Fishburn lived at Green Meadows Plantation.
