In the church records of the United High German Evangelical Reformed Church,
Northern Liberties township, Philadelphia, PA 1818-1856, are numerous surnames
from the village of Wingeshausen/Aue in Hessen Kassel with whom Schreckengasts
over the years were associated in marriages and baptisms. The first such is Georg
Heinrich Saßmanshaus, whose name appears on page 3 of the first Kirchenbuch
(church book) as one of the original members of the congregation organized in
1817.
Other familiar Wingeshausen surnames include: Wetter, Born, Linde, Dickel, Sonneborn,
Knebel, Riedesel, Homrighausen, Leyrer, Berkelbach, Schreck, Schöneborn,
Stremmel, Treude, and Fischer.
He owned West and Hanover Streets (Columbia and Belgrade), Kensington between
5 May 1849 and 7 Aug 1856 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, PA.
On 5 May 1849, George Korngoebel, Weaver, purchased from Harrison Earl and his
wife Gulialma P, and also John S. Miller, " certain lot or piece of ground
situated on the south side of West Street in the Kensignton District of County
aforesaid at the distance of three hundred and forty feet seven an a half inches
eastward from the eastern side of Hanover Street containing in front or breadth
on said West Street eighteen feet and extending in length or depth southward
between parallel lines parallel with said Hanover Street eighty five feet bounded
northward by West Street, southward, eastward and westward by other ground of
the said Harrison Earl and John S. Miller."
(West Street is now Belgrade Street, and Hanover Street is now Columbia Street.
The house is either 434 or 436 Belgrade Street, Philadelphia PA 19125.)
The price paid was $1,00, plus $22.50 "of silver money of the United States
of America, each dollar weighing seventeen ___weights and six grains, at least
in equal half yearly payments on the first day of the months of January and July
in each year forever;" and that George Korngoebel "will within one
year from the date hereof erect build and furnish on the said ... lot a good
and sustantial brick building of sufficient value to secure the said yearly rent...
:" provided that if George Korngoebel pays to Earl and Miller "the
sum of three hundred and seventy five dollars," George Korngoebel will own
the property free and clear.
On this property Johann Georg Korngiebel built a brick house. It is probably
still standing, either at 436 or 434 Belgrade Street, Philadelphia PA 19125.
In this house the oldest children, Maria Katherina and Johann Georg Jr., probably
died on 14 and 28 Sept 1853. In this house also George Ludwig (Lewis) Korngaeble
probably was born, and Elisabeth Gertraud (Lizzie) Korngaebel was certainly born
13 Aug 1853, just a month before her oldest two siblings died. The cemetery in
which the children were buried was just a block away from their home; it is now
a city school playground.
Sometime before Dec 1855, when William Frederick was born in Perry County, probably
in 1854, the family moved to Perry County. Perhaps the moved was related to the
sudden death of the two oldest children in the city, which was in the mid-1800's
notably dirty and smokey from coal heating, and without a sanitary sewage system
or safe drinking water. Epidemics of typhus, typhoid and cholera were common,
as well as diseases such as influenza and tuberculosis.
On 7 Aug 1856, George Korngoebel "of the county of Perry, formerly of the
City of Philadelphia, Carpet Weaver, and Maria Elizabeth his wife," sold
this property to George Henry Koechlein for $475.00. There was continued the
$21.50 "yearly ground rent" to Harrison Earl and John S. Miller. Sale
also was subject to the payment by George Korngoebel of $200.00 mortgage debt
on the property due to the Hermann Saving Fund Association.
It is noted at the bottom of the record that George Korngoebel and Maria Elizabeth
Korngoebel both and written their signatures "in German."
He appeared on the census on 22 Aug 1850 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co,
PA.

He emigrated about 1854/55 from Elliottsburg, Spring Twp, Perry Co, PA.
Why did George and Mary Korngable migrate from Philadelphia to Perry County,
Penna? It is a mystery and will never be solved.
However, it seems likely that their move was related to the deaths of their youngest
two children, Maria Catharina and Johann George 2 weeks apart in September 1853.
Did they know people already living in Perry County? There was a large German
community there.
He appeared on the census on 1 Jun 1880 in Spring Twp, Perry Co, PA.

He was Evangelical Reformed Church (German) 1810 to 1889.
Johann Georg Korngiebel and Maria Elisabetha Schreckengast were married 16 Feb
1845 in the German Reformed Salem Congregation, also known as the "United
High-German Evangelical Calvinist Reformed Church." Both Georg and Maria
were from areas of the German states, Wolfhagen-Hessen Kassel and Wingeshausen-Kreis
Wittgenstein respectively, where the Protestant faith was dominantly Reformed,
not Lutheran.
The following account of the beginning of the Salem German Reformed Church is
from the 1952 anniversary publication of the Salem-Zion Evangelical Reformed
Church, now the Salem-Zion United Church of Christ, Mascher and Spencer Streets,
Philadelphia:
Religious persecution in the Palatinate during the early 1700's brought large
numbers of German people to the shores of the new world, principally to Pennsylvania.
With them they brought their German Bible, their Heidelberg Catechism and their
intense desire that their children be reared in the Reformed faith.
Soon Reformed Churches began to arise in their midst - in Falkner Swamp, Whitemarch,
Old Goshenhoppen, Philadelphia - wherever groups could be served by the few pastors
available.
The first German Reformed congregation in Philadelphia (known today as Old First
Church at 50th and Locust Streets) was organized in 1727. For some time it met
in a barn on Arch Street near Fifth, and in 1748 it erected its first house of
worship on Race Street near Fourth. In colonial days, it ministered to all of
the German-speaking population of Philadelphia of the Reformed faith.
By 1817, however, those of its members who no longer used the German language
in their everyday business wanted to introduce English in the church services.
When the first English sermon was preached, a substantial number walked out of
the service, to gather elsewhere and plan for another Reformed Church where German
would be spoken exclusively.
Thus began a trend which continued until recent times, with German and English
Reformed churches existing side by side in Philadelphia, with separate classical
synodical and institutional loyalties.
The new congregation, known as "The German Reformed Salem Congregation,"
was formally organized on Septemer 13, 1818. Its first building, on American
Street, near Green, was dedicated on October 24, 1819. The first pastor, the
Rev. Frederick Vandersloot, was succeeded in 1823 by the Rev. Henry Bibighaus,
who served faithfully for almost thirty years, until his death in 1851. Three
short pastorates followed, during which time the Zion and Bethlehem congregations
were founded.
Ministers:
The Rev. Frederick W. Vandersloot, 1818-1823
The Rev. Henry Bibighaus, 1823-1851
The Rev. John Gantenbein, 1851-1852
The Rev. Rahn, 1852-1855
======================
In Perry County, Pennsylvania, where Johann George and Maria Elisabeth moved
about 1855, their youngest two children were baptized in the Ludolph Church on
Germany Road in "Little Germany." This country church, built in 1841,
served both Lutheran and Reformed in a German-language congregation. It was part
of the Landisburg Reformed Charge, served from Landisburgh, about 6 miles southwest.
In this church their two youngest children, William Frederich and Mary Christian
(Jane) were baptized. It's a very simple, plain, typically German Reformed country
worship space. Plain board pews on three sides of a small raised dais at the
front of which is a counter which served as a pulpit. A small plain Lord's Table
in front. A cast iron wood stove, which once stood in the middle of the building.
The church is now owned by the Perry County Historians.
They probably worshiped here until 1882 when George sold his farm land and moved
into the village of Elliottsburg to a house on Mahanoy Ridge Road. It was about
one-half mile from the Mt. Zion Evangelical Church, established in 1859, also
a German Reformed congregation. In the cemetery of this church, which was destroyed
by winds in 1975, Johann George Korngiebel (Korngable) is buried. His grave marker
is a typical late 19th century white marble slab, now weathered and worn and
covered with lichen. His name is readable, as is his death date
After searching records for a burial site for Mary Elisabeth Schreckengast Korngable
without success, I concluded that the space separating George Korngable's grave
site from his granddaughter Emma Thomas' in the Mt. Zion Evangelical Association
cemetery in Elliottsburg is the likely burial place for Mary, with no stone.
Beside Emma's grave is that of her parents, Elisabeth Gertraud (Lizzie) Korngable
and William
H. Thomas, and of their daughter Emma Florence Thomas. .
He owned Little Germany and Elliottsburg circa 1854 and 1889 in Elliottsburg,
Spring Twp, Perry Co, PA.
Johann Georg Korngiebel's first land purchase in Little Germany, Elliottsburg,
Perry Co, PA, was apparently two parcels:
- 26 acres (probably farm land)
- 6 acres and 33 perches, one-half of the land obtained by warrant by John Dale
in 1835 (probably woodland, for firewood)
He sold both parcels to Ira S. Weaver on 10 Oct 1882 for $1,100.00. A tidy sum
in 1882. George was 72 years old at this time. He then bought the house and one
quarter acre on Mahanoy Ridge Road, which house burned in 1886, and which house
he had insured for $250.00.
The newly built replacement 2-story house, and an additional 1-story house on
a 1 acre+ property with a limestone quarry, were sold at auction after his death
in 1890.
He was a carpet weaver.
According to Lena May Kongabel Benson, the Korngiebels were carpet weavers by
trade in Germany, This is confirmed by the occupation listed for Johann Georg
Korngiebel in the 1850 Federal Census as "weaver."
An 1877 map shows "G. Corngabel" as owner of a home in the east end
of Little German Valley, Spring Township, 2 mles SE of Elliottsburg and 4 miles
SW of Bloomfield Borough.

Times, 12-17-1886
The residence of Mr. Geo. Korngable, on Mahanoy Ridge, near Elliottsburg, caught
fire Thursday night of last week, about 10 o'clock, and before discovery, the
fire had got so great that scarcely anything was saved. Two ten dollar gold pieces,
several dollars in silver and a five dollar bill were burned. The gold and silver
may be found yet. The origin of the fire is not known. Mr. Korngable had his
house insured for $250 in the American Company.
[This fire is most likely the reason there are no documents about George or his
wife, no family Bible, etc.]
He was married to Maria Elisabetha (Mary) SCHRECKEGAST (daughter of
Görg (Georg) Ludwig SCHRECKEGAST and Maria Elisabetha

Maria Elisabeth Schreckengast's father, Görg Ludwig, died 4 Aug 1836. Her
mother, Maria Elisabetha nee Schöneborn, died 2 Feb 1834. The youngest child
in the family, Elisabeth Gertrud, died on 20 Apr 1841 at the age of 19. At her
death only Maria Elisabeth (age 24) and her next older sister, Anna Elisabetha
(age 27), were left unmarried and under the age of 30.
It is probable that Maria Elisabetha Schreckengast (*20 Jan 1817) and her next
older sister Anna Elisabetha Schreckengast (*22 Nov 1814) emigrated to America
shortly after the death on 20 Apr 1841 of the youngest child in the family.
On 5 Jan 1842, George Born of the North Lib. was married with Anna Elisabeth
Schreckengast of Kensington in the Salem German Reformed Church, Philadelphia.
A son was born to them, named Ludwig, on 24 May 1844, baptized 15 Sep 1844.
Sponsors: Ludwig Rick and Maria Elis. Schreckengass (probably the mother's sister).
Georg Born was also born in Wingeshausen. Whether their desire to marry was a
factor in their emigration is unknown, though couples who wished to marry against
parental wishes were known to emigrate.
Their emigration to Philadelphia was surely eased by the previous emigration
of their Grand-Uncle Georg Henrich Schreckengast (born 3 May 1739) and his wife
Sophia, and their children, who emigrated on the Ship HOLLAND arriving in Phildelphia
on 19 Aug 1796:

This Maria Elisabetha appears in the church records first in 1834 as a baptismal
sponsor for Robert, son of Robert Hetrich and his wife Elisabeth, born 12 Jan
1834, baptized 8 Jul 1834. Maria Elisabeth Schreckengast lived until 20 Dec 1848
when at age 72 yr, 11 mo, 3 days she died and was buried 22 Dec in the church
vault in the cemetery.
George Heinrich Schreckegast, the son, died in Philadelphia on 24 Jan 1842,
aged 63 yr, 2 mo, 3 days, and was buried 27 Jan, in West St. Cem, Kensington.
She was buried in 1895.
While Maria (Mary) Schreckengast Korngable's death is recorded in the church
book of Landisburg Reformed Charge, Landisburg, Perry Co, PA, the exact place
of her burial is not. As there cannot be found any grave for her in any Perry
County cemetery, it is likely that she was buried beside her husband in the Mt.
Zion Evangelical cemetery, Elliottsburg, where there is a grave-sized empty spade,
and no stone was placed.
She died on 3 Nov 1895 in Elliottsburg, Spring Twp, Perry Co, PA.

of the late George Korngable and was born in Germany. Her remains will be consigned
to her grave today at 10 a.m., Rev. House officiating.
