1624, 30 Dec, Allertshausen - ---- Römer and his wife
Background
The early linkages of Römers are totally speculative. There are missing
pages in the records and the pages that survive are exceedingly difficult to
read, due to age staining and deterioration of the paper and ink, as well as
the primitive nature of both the handwriting and the record-keeping.
What appears fairly certain, however, is that the Römers of Climbach originated
in a Römer clan of Allertshausen (Ailertshausen in the oldest records).
Throughout the centuries, the ties between Römers in Climbach and Allertshausen
remain strong: they serve as godparents for one another's children and in later
years distant cousins will marry.
In this record, I have made several arbitrary links between persons in the oldest
generations in order to maintain the flow of the family story. Where a birth/baptismal
record is not cited as proof, the linkage is assumption only.
The Name Römer
Dr. Hans Bahlow wrote in his "Deutsches Namenlexikon":
Römer (freq.), Röhmer, Ro(h)mer mostly means a pilgrim headed for Rome,
also a merchant who travelled to the Romance countries. Pilgrimages to Rome were
undertaken as penance for murderous deeds: in Liegn. a Nicclos Klette absolved
himself of it in 1386 by paying "three and a half marks." Hensel Romer,
Liegn. 1354, Joh. Romanus (Augustinian monk(, Glatz 1413; on the Upper Rhine
the name may indicate Romance folk traditions: Wernher der Romer, farmer 1296
(Socin, p. 555). Also occurs as house name: in Mainz 1315 Cunrad zum Romer, cf.
the "Römer" (old city area) in Frankfurt.
