bullet Pleasant McCubbin(656) was born on 19 Sep 1804 in Wolf Island Creek, Rockingham County, NC. (657)(658) He died on 6 Oct 1863 in Warsaw, Benton County, MO.(659) (657)(658) From "John C. McCubbin Papers"

Pleasant was the leader of an emigrant party, consisting of his family, the William H. Rupe family, and the John and Levi Bloyd families, that left Green County, KY in the fall of 1830, going to Sangamon Co., Ill. Where they spent the winter, and continuing on to Hancock Co., in the spring of 1831. These people established the first white settlement in what is now known as Oak School district of Hancock Co.

Pleasant moved with his family to Benton Co., Mo in 1836 in company with the William H. Rupe family. Pleasant died near Warsaw, MO, Oct 7, 1863.

John Cameron McCubbin, 945 Simpson Ave, Fresno, CA, Great grandson of James McCubbin and grandson of Joseph McCubbin, wrote the following article on Sep 6, 1928 in a letter to Judge B. D. McCubbin. A copy of that letter is in the home of R.E. McCubbin

Pleasant McCubbin and William H.. Rube had each married the others sister.

The party traveled as far as Sangamon County, Illinois, with their ox teams, and there went into the winter quarters, near Springfield. In the following spring, just as soon as it was possible to travel, they continued their journey to Hancock County, and located in what is now Oak Grove school district. During that period all the houses built in the part of the state were built of logs and these people build theirs of this material.

It is not known whether William H. Rube and John Boyd, Jr., Built their homes, but it was somewhere in the vicinity of the others. Pleasant McCubbin built his dwelling just to the north of the little revine that runs along North in West side of the Grove Cemetery.

Levi Bloyd build his dwellings about 200 yards to the north of where Lysander Belknap later build his residence in which was at a still later date occupied by his son, Scott, as his country home. The Boyd dwelling was really composed of two houses, which were built about eight or 10 feet apart, the gables facing each other. One continuous roof covered both houses and the vacant space is well. This vacant space was called a "entry".

All went well with the new settlers until the crops were in, when an Indian scare created a disturbance in that section. There were good grounds for such an excitement at the time on account of the Black Hawk War that had been waged not far to the north of them. Feeding quite anxious, especially for the welfare of the women and children, they abandoned their homes at once, in taking along only what was absolutely necessary, they made all haste possible , with their sole plotting ox teams to Beardstown, on the Illinois River to the east. There they build one long log structure, that we would now call an apartment house. There were just enough petitions to separate the different families. Here that lived until he felt it was be quite safe to return their homes.

Thomas Bloyd ,and his wife, Elizabeth, and McCubbin , who was a second cousin of Pleasant McCubbin and Mrs. William Rube, moved with their families to this new settlement in the fall of 1831. Thomas Boyd was a nephew of Levi Bloyd. They built their House at a point near the foot of the hill, about one and a quarter of a mile east, from where the Bartlett-Huntley-Martin mill was afterwards located.

When Levi Bloyd moved to Hancock County, he brought a small pair of hand burrs, called a quern. These served as a community wrist mill, and all the families in the settlement used it to grind their corn bread with.

About 1833 Miss Clara Chatman taught a subscription school in this at settlement, and all the children there were so situated that they could avail themselves of the privilege, attended the school. Also about this time there was a missionary Baptist minister, by the name of Logan, held religious services at the various homes in the neighborhood.

I have in my possession to old communications there were written by Levi Bloyd to friends in Kentucky. One of these is dated November 1,1831 and address to Samuel Phillips and Nicholas McCubbin , contained a special message for Zachariah McCubbin . Both the McCubbin's mentioned in the communication were brothers of Pleasant McCubbin and Mrs. Rube. The other communication was dated April 12, 1832 and was addressed to Joseph McCubbin , my grandfather, Beardstown, which was about 50 miles away and the Post Office used by these settlers.

The reports sent back to Kentucky, in the communications referred to, were so favorable that they prompted Thomas, David and Joseph McCubbin , who were brothers of Pleasant McCubbin , to eventually move with their families to the new settlement. David and Thomas preceding Joseph, the date of their arrival is not available. These two brothers who married sisters whose maiden name was Gumm. Thomas built his house at the brow of the Hill diagonally across the quarter section, and near its extreme northwest corner, almost directly northwest of the present location of the Oak Grove Church. The other brother, Joseph, came in the fall of 1834. At that time is family consisted of the following: his wife, Eleanor, and Lipsie, and their three small children, Sally Ann Lany, who is at the age of 15 married Jesse Riggins; Elizabeth Jane Emery, Was the age of 18 married William Booz and William Gardner, who married Elizabeth Perkins of Puilot Grove Township. A stepson, Joel Thacker, was of age at that time and, and he remained in Kentucky but later move to Hancock County, Mrs. McCubbin's aged father, John Lipsie, was making his home with his daughter, and he, too, was a member of the party. They arrived at their destination so late in the season that the early winner caught them without their dwelling completed. The weather became so bitter cold if they were unable to keep the clay mud in in a plastic condition long enough to have it adhere to the logs While attempted to chink the cracks, so they used strips of undressed dear skins as a temporary substitute. Joseph built this, his first home, about 200 yards to the South East of where the Oak Grove School now stands. The house stood just to the south of little revine. My father, Thomas B. was now popularly known as "Uncle Tom" was born in this house.

John Lipsie was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and lost his leg in the struggle for independence. He died in June 1835 at the great age of a hundred three years old and his remains were later later laid to rest in what is now known as the Belknap Cemetery, and his grave is indicated by a marble monument placed there by the D. A. R.. His name with other revolutionary soldiers who died in the County is carved on a marble tablet which is now the courthouse at Carthage.

Catherine, wife of John Lipsie, died in the fall of the year, 1833 and was buried at Elizabethtown, Harden County, Kentucky. Three years prior to the death of John Lipsie, John Bloyd, Sr., had been laid away near the spot where Lipsie remains lie. Bloyd's body was the first one ever buried in that Cemetery.

All the Rube's and all the McCubbin's, except Joseph and his family, move to Missouri within a few years. The last of these to leave was the family of Pleasant McCubbin . They moved to Benton County in the spring of 1836. Pleasant help the build the first house on that track of land where Warsaw, the county seat of Benton County, is now located. Bartlett, one of the sons of Pleasant McCubbin , was born in Hancock County, Jan. 8, 1836, is now living in the Breckenridge, Missouri. He is in his 98 year, and he and is an excellent health for a man that age.

Pleasant McCubbin served in the Black Hawk war about six months. He was an athlete and Champion prize fighter of a large territory in the vicinity of his old home in Kentucky. While this sporting record was possibly no credit to him, possession of such unusual Strength served him well throughout life. For some time while living in Illinois he was engaged in hauling freight with his ox team from Beardstown to different points in Hancock County. No other man at either end of his run could lift as much as he, nor could they load or unload the heavy barrels a whiskey, which often composed a heavy percent of his load, with the same ease in with the rapidity as did McCubbin. An instant related to me by Samuel Brown, for whom Pleasant worked was building his mill dam across Crooked Creek, was described as follows: McCubbin was moving heavy stones from the quarry on the bank and placing them in the dam. About 2 o' clock P.M. without having exerted self unnecessarily, he stopped and came to Brown and said, "Do you see how much rock I have moved?" To which Brown replied in the affirmative. Then McCubbin asked if it was as much as his average man had been moving and in a whole day. Brown told them that it was more than any other man had ever moved for him in entire day. Then McCubbin said, " Well, if you don't mind I think I'll lay off until morning." Brown said, "All right." McCubbin was back of job the next morning at sun up.

Those who were familiar with the work done by Pleasant McCubbin in preparing heavy timbers for buildings claimed that is unusual strength in wielding a broad ax while scoring the logs and the dexterity with which the finishing strokes were laid on, and he could hew about twice as many timbers in a given time as any other man with whom he worked, and the character of this finished product was practically faultless.

MCCUBBIN

Between September 24 and October 1, 1830, an emigrant party of at least 29 people started north from Green County Kentucky to establish new homes in western Illinois.

Pleasant McCubbin was leader of the group, which also included his brother, David, both their families, and William H. Rupe, whose wife was the former Eleanor McCubbin. (Rupe and Pleasant McCubbin had married each other's sister.)

They did go to Illinois. But both David and Pleasant McCubbin families in the early 1830's came to Benton County to settle, David first, then, in 1836, Pleasant his family. The Rubes also came to Missouri.

The following article is excerpted from the book "William Bloyd-Bloyed of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Green County, Kentucky and His Descendants" by Edna Bloyd Nichols and Carolyn Geraldine Simpson. [Portions are paraphrased for clarity].

Following are a few short items about the eight McCubbin children who came to Hancock County with their parents, Plesant and Mathilda (Rupe) McCubbin in 1831. All of these together with Barnett W., who was born while the family lived in Hancock County, moved with their parents to Benton County, Missouri, in 1836. Thomas learned the blacksmith's trade and in 1849 crossed the plains to California and settled in Marysville where he opened up a shop. He operated several forges in the shop .He died in Marysville, February 1, 1874 . Grandville R. learned the blacksmith trade. Like his father, his strength was far above the average. He died at the Old Solider's Home at Leavenworth, Kansas, and was buried there. Kern never married. He died at Warsaw, Missouri, April 16, 1872. James Addison learned the printers and taylors trade. As a musician, he was far above average in the use of the violin. He never married. He died in Ray County , Missouri. John was a fine violin player. He married Polly Tucker. He died in Gameron, Missouri. Casandre married Henry Gregory and had four children by him. Her second husband's name was Michael Mahan and they married in Hannibal, Missouri, where she spend the remainder of her life and where she died. Frank went overland to California in 1853. He was unusually stout and seemed to have double the strength of an ordinary man. He never married. He died in Marysville, California. Byrd died in Hannibal, Missouri, but was taken to Breckenridge, Missouri, for burial.
