James McCubbin, who married Mary Parthena Cook, followed his sister Sarah, and brother, John into Missouri. The the late Autumn of 1836, they arrived in the Little Richwood's county, and in the spring of 1837, at a favorite place near the Brushy Fork Creek, immediately opened the wilderness clearing of a small patch of hickory land. Having stirred the soil enough with a pole-plow pulled by oxen, James Mary, and children took several pokes of maize toted in a wagon-box from Kentucky, and planted their first crop. First, living under a crude lean-to constructed of pole and brush, they enjoyed few conveniences, but after dog-days, good weather having assured a bountiful harvest, a large cellar was dug and covered, a smokehouse erected, and a log dwelling raised. Now, firmly established, the McCubbin Improvement, with the coming of married sons,and other members of the clan nearby, would become a settlement, and a place for holding social activities, especially church services.

James and his family were 8 of the 10 members who organized the Hickory Point United Baptist Church of Jesus Christ in Miller County, MO in 1840. He died May 1850 as the result of an accident.

The 13th Kentucky Regiment was organized in December, 1961, at Camp Hobson, Kentucky, under Col. Edward H. Hobson, and was mustered in December, 1961..... It participated in the following battles, in which losses was sustained:
Shilo, Tenn; Huff's Ferry, Tenn; Lenoir Station. Tenn; Knoxville, Tenn; Ressa, Ga; Dallas, Ga; Cassville, Ga; Atlanta, Ga; and the numerous engagements incident to the capture of that place. It was mustered out at Louisville, KY Jan 12, 1865.

A Brief History of the 13th Kentucky Infantry Regiment

The Regiment was raised in the fall of a 1861 by Col. E. H. Hopson and, assisted by his nephew, W. E Hopson who was the Regiment's commander for most of its career. The men came principally from the counties along the Green River: Green, Taylor, Larue, Hardin, Barren, Warren, Metcalfe, and others. Before the men were mustard into service they were engaged in the protection of their home area from guerrillas and raiders.

The companies of the 13th were mustard into service at Camp Hobson, near Greensburg, , on various dates into late December, 1861. The 13th marched to Nashville as a part of General Don Carlos Buell's army of the Ohio about the time General Grant was capturing Fort Donelson. Buell then received orders to pinroceed west to join Grant in his campaign to take the important railroad center in Corinth Mississippi. But the Confederatifes moved north and surprise Grant at Pittsburgh Landing near Shiloh Church on Sunday, April 6, 1861, pushing Grants army back with heavy losses on both sides. Buell's army, having been marching hard for severaland days, arrived at Pittsburgh Landing about sundown.

In the battle of Shiloh on the 7th of April, the 13th was in Crittenden's's division, Boyle's brigade. The brigade consisted of the 9th Kentucky, 13th Kentucky, 19th Ohio,and the 59th Ohio regiments. Marching insteadily forward the in brigade encountered the enemy and heavy fighting began. In his report General Boyle said "The 13th, led by Col. Hobson in a gallanta charge upon the enemy, drovethem back with great slaughter, forcing them to desert their guns. In this charge Colonel Hobson and, major Hobson, Capt. Fowler, and Adjt. Steward behaved with great coolness and courage, and with the exception of the recoil caused by a portion of the Wisconsin troops breaking through the lines, creating some disorder, the steadily led their brave man forward, driving the enemy before them. Major Hobson and had his or shot dead under him."

As the men's step all for the river ferry boats and climb the body banks they were surrounded by the more wise amendments of rents army. The colonel on horseback admonished the men "Fill you canteens, boys. You'll be in hell tomorrow and you'll need the water!" Sergeant Oldham, Co. D., wrote in his diary "landed at Pittsburgh at about 11 o'clock at night, marched out on the bloody Battleground which had been fought that day, iand stood no in line of battle in the rain the balance of the night and very hungry." They could not have slept in any case - the Union gunboats in Tennessee River, on Grant's orders, were firing shells over their heads every few minutes at the Confederate positions.

Sgt. Oldham gave a less flowery account - "Marched out on the bloody field of East strife early in the morning fought hard all day with but very little to eat took the rain agian at night." For the next six days, Oldham's diary entry is the same - "Burying the dead"
