Thomas
Kellow Hawke(1) was born about 1819
in Gwennap, Cornwall. He died in Aug 1886 in Aberdare, Sth. Glamorgan, Wales.
He was buried on 18 Aug 1886 in Aberdare, Sth. Glamorgan, Wales. During his
life Thomas Hawke worked as an Engine Driver in one of the many collieries in
Wales.
The driver was officially known as a Colliery Winding Engine Man. This was a
job that put a great strain on the person who undertook it as they were expected
to work long, hard hours and a high level of concentration was demanded from
them. After all, they were responsibl e for the lives of all the men going down
into the pit. The driver had to keep his eyes firmly fixed on the huge dial in
front of him as it went from level to level. Once it reached the required level
the driver would slow down and deposit the cage as gently as he could. A smooth
ride was all the miners ever wanted; however it wasn't always achieved.
The engines were steam driven by gigantic pistons, which let of a loud hiss of
steam when they were started. Nowadays any that survive are operated by electricity.
It was quite a nerve-racking job, very well paid for the period of time and very
coveted and by all accounts a job that tended to pass from father to son, which
may have been the case for a while with Thomas's son Josiah who was shown employed
as an engine driver in the 1881 census.

It is important to note that Martha was married twice. The first time was to
Robert Hughes i n 1844 in Swansea, Sth. Wales. This marriage produced two daughters.
Sarah, who was born in 1 847 and Jane who was born in 1845 in Aberafon. This
marriage ended for an as yet undiscovered reason sometime between1848 and 1850
when Martha married Thomas Kellow Hawke.

Also Mary Hawke -. 21st May 1854.
Young Thomas was buried on the 24th of August 1855 aged 18 months.
Going by these dates for young Thomas it would appear that he was born around
the beginning o f 1853. He had another sister Elizabeth, who later became Mrs.
Henry Brace who was also born in 1853 in Port Talbot. Was this a case of two
births in quick succession or could it be th e first evidence of twins in our
family? I'll hopefully be able to let you know in due course .

It is worth remembering that even though the places of birth for the 1881 and
