in Harpurhey Cem., , Manchester. Educated at Hebden Bridge, Yorks, where he
lived with his remarried maternal grandmother Mary Clayton at Palis House. His
first child Sarah was born at 27 Bury St., Salford in 1853. Abraham's occupation
was "Pattern designer. In 1868 at the birth of Harriet he was a "fancy
dress manufacturer". Learnt the dying trade from his father, and became
a partner with James Parker in Parker Lord & Co Ltd, manufacturers of polished
cotton linings or `glissades'. Grew rich in the 1890s and bought the local mansion
Alkrington Hall. In the 1891 census he was living at Tonge House, Middleton,
with his son "Abraham" 19 s b Middleton, his grandchild Pattie E. Wilkinson,
3, born Liverpool, and a servant, Mary Hogan, 62, born Dublin. Tong House was

Abraham
Parker Lord(1) was born on 12 Mar 1873
in Tonge House, Middleton, Lancashire. He died on 1 Nov 1912 in Manly, Sydney,
NSW, Australia. He was buried in Manly Cem. Sydney, NSW, Australia. The cause
of death was chronic alcoholism followed by a stroke. From what I can make out
he seems to have been intended to take over the family firm of Parker Lord Ltd,
and indeed seems to have been named with that end in view so that the boss of
Parker Lord's would in fact be Parker Lord (as he was always known). (The Parker
partner had left the scene some years earlier.) Evidently he was a difficult,
rebellious child, very much addicted to engineering, especially steam engines,
and not cut out to be a mill-manager. In 1891 aged 19 he lived with his father
and an old Irish servant at Tong House Middleton. His father sent him (or took
him in 1892 on the Luciana) on a trip to America presumably to broaden his mind,
but he spent all his time in the ship's engine-room. Eventually he achieved his
ambition, possibly to his father's disappointment, and became a marine engineer.
He was so described on his Australian papers. The last straw was probably his
father's remarriage to his Aunt Amanda, and two years later he took the obvious
escape route, married himself, and set up house quite grandly at "The Larches",
Middleton. However soon after that he turns up in Sydney with his wife living
in a boatshed at Waratah Bay, Coal and Candle Creek, owned by a man named Windybank
with whom he became fast friends. Windybank had discovered Waratah Bay just after
the railwa was opened and decided to make his home there. At first he lived in
a cave. He bought the General Gordon, a ferry displaced by the railway bridge,
cut it in half with hacksaw blades, and made it into two houseboats which he
let out to Sydneysiders for holidays and weekends. Windybank's Bait Service still
exists i Sydney, and I talked to a very old lady, now (1996) long dead called
Zara Coulson, nee Wndybank, who remembered Parker Lord. He built a house next
to the Windybank boatshed and drove the "Lady Zara", Windybank's steam
launch which plied between the boatshed and Palm Beach. When his father died
in 1909 Parker inherited some money and went to live in Manly where he died three
years later. He built a boat and called it the "Nancyrene". He had
earlier build an organ which stood in Alkrington Hall, so he must have been an
accomplished joiner. Parents: Abraham Lord and
Eliza Ward.He was married to Martha Louisa Trumble between 21 Jan 1896 and Jan in Liscard, Cheshire. Children were: Ina Eliza Lord, Abraham Arthur Lord, Nancy Irene Lord.
