During the Steel Industry boom years, local people lived with the repeated thump of steam ha mmers echoing day and night across the town. The hammers had a variety of uses including forgi ng steel rings such as railway tyres, and massive bearings.. Steam Hammers were invented by J ames Nasmyth of Manchester in 1839. They superseded the water powered Tilt Hammer. A team o f five men worked the steam hammer, the ' Team Cod or Chargehand ' and three ' Tongsmen ' ma nipulated a red hot steel ingot on the anvil in the arch between the hammer legs. The ' To p or Hammer Head ' was driven down by the driving rod under steam pressure from the cylinde r and piston above. The ' Leverman and Hammer Driver ' controlled each blow with precision us ing their years of experience to deliver as much force, or delicacy, for the shaping of the metal as required.

His family returned to Lei cester during his childhood He spent several years in the Royal Navy serving aboard H.M.S. Vi ctory and on leaving trained as a carpenter, which he then made his trade. He courted Jean He rbert for many years and eventually they married with Tom taking on her two sons as his own . Sadly though the marriage failed after only a short time and ended in divorce soon after. T om was taken ill in 1987 with a brain tumour and died on 26th December 1987 at the hospice i n Leicester. bulletThomas Wake Graham(1) was born on 19 Jun 1901 in Sunderland. He died on 1 Feb 1973 in Leicester. Thomas Wake Graham (Tom) was born on the 19th June 1901 at 34 Bell Street in Sunderland. Hi s parents were Robert Graham and Ann Whitfield. On leaving school he took up a career in th e food industry as a butcher, but soon decided that wasnt to be his vocation and he began wo rk as a shipwright and carpenter in Sunderland. following the untimely death of one of his br others whilst at work,Thomas decided to leave the shipyards and train as a Civil Engineer. Th is led to a move south where he lived foe a while at 21 Grasmere Street. It was there he me t and married Annie Ethel Gertrude Palmer who lived at 100 Guthlaxton Street on 16th of Novem ber 1929. This marriage was witnessed by Gladys Smart and a Mr Kirk. It was only a few year s after his wedding that Tom returned to the Northeast to take part in the Jarrow March to Lo ndon. Below are a few details concerning this event.

The Jarrow Crusade
A town called Jarrow in the North of England was one of the places hit badly by the Depressio n of the 1930's. There were many people unemployed. Thousands of men volunteered to march t o London in October 1936 to protest against unemployment, and to show how much they wanted t o work. The dole money they received for being out of work was just £1.50, barely enough to f eed a family.

The men from Jarrow also wanted to hand in a petition to the Government, asking for help. Tw o hundred men were chosen to march. One of the marchers was John Harney. He wrote a poem abou t his experience:-

"We started off from Jarrow town,

a pale faced hungry band.

With all the population out,

to shake us by the hand.

But as we left our homes behind,

determination grew.

On every face to show the world

what Jarrow lads could do."

The public were kind and generous to the men who marched. They were given food and shelter. I n Wakefield they slept in a church, and in Leicester their boots were mended free of charg e . Rushdenin Northamptonshire was on their route and they stopped outside the Compass publi c house at mid-day on a Sunday, just as people were getting their Yorkshire puddings from th e bakehouse. The people of the 'top end' (as that part of Little Street was known), immediate ly took their puddings to the marchers and gave them a good meal More than £600 was given t o them throughout their march, a lot of money in those days

.At the time of the marriage Annie worked as a Welter for a hosiery firm.Tom's job as a forem an for a civil engineering firm made him partly responsible for many of the huge cooling tow ers erected around the country before, during and after the war. Sadly many of these have no w been pulled down to make way for roads, new superstores or, as in the case of the Leiceste r cooling towers new sports facilitiesand a Morrisons superstore. On a couple of occasions h e was lucky to escape with his life. In one instance he became ill close to the top of one o f the towers in Peterboroygh and was left dangling! Needless to say a major rescue operatio n followed and he lived to tell the tale. Tom and Annie had 3 children, Thomas, Rita and Cynt hia. In later years, not happy with the thought of retirement he worked for Mansfield Hosier y Mills making sure the factory was clean and in good order for the other employees. It was o n his way from work one day in 1973 that he sadly died. He was buried at Saffron Hill Cemeter y on Stonesby Avenue in Leicester. Parents: Robert Graham and Ann Whitfield.
