Tribute to a great man (CALOOSA BELLE, Wed. Nov. 9 1983)
Monday morning's news brought to us information that greatly saddened our hearts. Jack Rafter, one of the finest and most professional men it has ever been our pleasure to conduct bussines with, died-struck down in the prime of what surely must have been a most fulfilling life.
Some of our reades may be wondering why we are paying tribute to a man from Clewiston. While it is true he was a Clewiston resident, he was truly a Hendry County citizen.
Mr. Rafter gave devotedly of his time to many worthwhile projects in our area. He served as attorney for the city commissions of LaBelle and Clewiston , was chairman of the borad of Hendry General Hospital Authority and was former attorney to the borad of county commissioners and the Hendry County School borad.
Mr. Rafter was an example of a rare characteristic in human nature. He overcame tremendous adversity to not only honorable serve the legal profession, but to gain the respect of all those he came in contact with.
Mr. Rafter was confined to a wheelchair and therefore could not stand with other men. He nonetheless occupied a postion that was head and shoulder above the rest of us.
It hardly seems fair that such a talented and vital man could be taken away.
Yes a giant has died, but he cast a long shadow that will remain with us for many years to come.
