2142. John DENTON Sr. was born in 1742 in Hampshire County, Virginia. He died in 1824 in Miller CO, AR. John came to Harrodsburg in 1775. He and his family fought one hardship after another. If not Indians, it was the cold winter of 1779-1780. If not the lack of food, it was a shortage of powder. The problems seemed endless. Some lost heart and went back east of the mountains. Even Daniel Boone wrote, "I have encouraged the people here in this country all that I could, but I can no longer encourage my neighbors nor my self to risque our lives here at such extraordinary hazards." However, the Dentons, David Williams or John Crow families did not return to Virginia during this violent period. In 1782, the Battle of Blue Licks proved to be the last major conflict of the Revolution. Indian attacks continued, but not in large numbers.
