29TH GENERATION

1990. Mary OUSELEY was born on 4 Jul 1654 in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland. (366)

She was married to John BOXWELL on 10 Oct 1672. (367) John BOXWELL was born before 15 Dec 1639 in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, England. (368) He died in Lingstown, County Wexford, Ireland. John came to Ireland in 1672 under an Act of Parliament "for the settlement of Protestant strangers in the Kingdom of Ireland." This meant that John had sworn allegiance to the King and was of the Protestant faith (took the Oaths of Allegiance and Supremacy) and thus became a Freeman of Ireland. This was a way for the King to plant Protestants in Ireland as a counter to the Catholic majority, and the franchise was restricted to Protestants of a certain standing. His certificate (kindly sent by Leslie Boxwell) reads:

"By the Lord Chancellor of Ireland. (Freedom of Ireland to John Boxwell 1672).

"I hereby certify that this day being the fifteenth day of October in the twenty fourth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord Charles the Second by the Grace of God of England Scotland Wales and Ireland , Defender of the Faith. Anno Domini One thousand six hundred and seventy two.

"John Boxwell native of Wooton Bassett in Wiltshire in the kingdom of England, Merchant, appeared before me according to an Act of Parliament entitled " an Act for encouraging Protestant Strangers and others to inhabit and plant in this Kingdom of Ireland, did take the oaths of Allegiance of Allegiance and Supremacy.
Given my hand St. Sepulchre Dublin , the and year above given.
Mich. Dublin. Canr."

From The Wexford Gentry, p. 40: John Boxwell went to Wexford where he became a ship's chandler, a dealer in rabbit skins, and successful as a merchant. His marriage to Mary Ouseley let him benefit from the Cromwellian distribution of lands, as he was given the castle and lands of Lingfield as part of his wife's dowry. Family tradition was that Lingfield was at the center of some smuggling operations that were quite common during that time. By 1707 he was renting and farming the Saltee Islands. Mary OUSELEY and John BOXWELL had the following children:
