3823. Joseph Edwin BABB
was born in 1737. He died in 1780. Joseph was disowned by the Quakers
for marrying out of unity. He moved his family to the Piedmont section of South
Carolina settling in what is now the lower part of Laurens County. A cousin,
Mercer Babb, and his sister, Margaret Wadlington, move d with him to what is
now Newberry County in South Carolina.
On 11/24/1767, Joseph received a grant to 250 acres of land on Beaver Dam Creek,
and on 7/3/1868, Mary was given a certificate of membership in the Bush River
Monthly Meeting "Quaker" which was situated about four miles from what
is now the Lauren s-Newberry County Line.
He was married to Mary ÒPollyÓ
McCOOL (daughter of ) on 17 Sep 1761. Mary ÒPollyÓ
McCOOL was born in 1744. She died on 3 Jun 1816 in Laurens Co Sc. Mary's
will is on record in the Lauren's County Court House. She is buried in the Babb-Kellett
Cemetery in lower Laurens County. Mary was disowned by the Quakers on 4/28/1792.
No reason was given, but it is presumed it was for remaining in South C arolina
when the Quakers left the state. It could also have been due to her participation
in the American Revolution.
Mary provided stores and lodging to our soldiers during the Revolutionary War.

It is thought by many Babb researchers, including myself, that Mary was a Babb
prior to marriage. Mary was born in 1743 or 1744 and along with several other
entries in a family Bible, she has been proven the grand-daughter of William,
the oldest s on of Phillip of Kittery, Maine who moved to Virginia at the same
time as Thomas Sr., the grandfather of Joseph.
There has been recent speculation that Joseph's wife was, prior to marriage,
Mary "Polly" McCool, daughter of James McCool b. in Ireland, and emigrated
in 1725. He married Ann Wright. Mary "Polly" McCool was married first
to Eldridge Fuller and re portedly married secondly to Joseph Babb. If Mary Babb
was the grand-daughter of William Babb, it seems unlikely that she was a McCool.
However, the dates for Mary McCool match those of Mary. This controversy is far
from being settled. Regardles s of Mary's maiden status, this does not effect
the line of descent from Joseph Babb.
