6863. Frank Edgar Gildersleeve
was born on 7 Mar 1881 in Carrollton, Carroll County, Missouri. He died
on 25 Feb 1949 in Enterprise, Wallowa County, Oregon. He was buried in Colfax
Cemetery, Colfax, Whitman, Washington. From the Wallowa County Reporter, March
27, 1918:
The highest price ever paid for cattle in Spokane was paid to Kelly &
Gildersleeve, Enterprise stockmen, last week when four carloads sold for $12.00
per 100 lbs. The steers averaged 1,315 lbs. They were a part of a shipment
of
nine cars, or 220 head, grown and fattened on Wallowa County bunch grass.
Certainly Wallowa County is a stockman's paradise.
From the Wallowa County Courthouse records: Gildersleeve, Frank E., March 4,
1949, will. March, 3 1951, order discharging executor.
Extracted from an article in the Wallowa County Chieftain, Enterprise, Oregon:
Frank E. Gildersleeve is one of the large stock owners and ranchers of Wallowa
County. He and Harry F. Kelley are the sole stockholders in the Washtucna Land
& Livestock company, which owns the former C. L. Hartshorn ranch 24 miles
east
of Enterprise. They have 450 acres of this land in crop with every prospect
of
a great yield of wheat and oats, and their holdings of cattle and sheep are
very large also. --When Frank was 24 years old he and his father and his
brother, George W. Gildersleeve, engaged in the butcher business at LaCrosse
and Washtucna, Washington, continuing until 1911 when the sons bought out their
father, and went into stock on a steadily increasing scale. The brothers and
Mr. Kelley bought their Wallowa county ranch in 1915, and last year George
Gildersleeve retired from the partnership, leaving the other two sole owners.
(he retired from the partnership in 1923 so this article appeared around 1924)
Article in The Wallowa County Chieftain, 26 Oct. 1992, under "Out of the
Past"
70 Years Ago: After losing a sack of choice wheat which he had bought at the
fair, W. E. Daggett had a turn in his luck last week and recovered the grain.
Frank E. Gildersleeve found it in the road. ---Mr. Daggett has not fared as
well with his prize hog which fell out of his wagon and was killed. The hog
is
still dead.
