Joseph Carr Gildersleeve, fourth son on Joseph (3) and Mary (Mosher) Gildersleeve, was a shoe maker by trade. When the war of the Rebellion broke out, enlisted with the 47th Regiment, Ne w York Volunteers. Participated in several engagements, among which were: Capture Port Roya l (Hilton Head), S. C., November 7, 1861; Battle Port Royal Ferry, S.C., January 1, 1862; Bat tle James Island, S. C., June 10, 1862; Battle of Secessionville, S. C., June 16, 1862; Captu re of Fort Wagner, and Gregg, S. C., September 7, 1863; Capture of Edisto Island, S. C., Marc h 29, 1862; Capture of Ossoborn, Island, Georgeia, July 4, 1863; Siege of Battery Wagner, S . C., July 19 to September 7, 1863; Bombardment of Fort Sumter, S. C., August 17 to 23, 1863 ; Operations of Charleston Harbor, S. C., September 8 to November 1, 1863; Bombardment of For t Sumter, S. Married to Catharine J. Luff, daughter of William E. and Jane J. (Co x) Luff, of Rhinebeck, New York, September 9th, 1859. Died in Brooklyn, New York, March 22 , 1900. Buried in The Rhinebeck Cemetery, Rhinebeck, New York.
