At this time, Susie had been a teacher at Revere Public Schools and then Everett Public Schools (209). Elmer attended several secondary schools before Everett, from where he graduated in 1901. At Everett High School, Elmer developed superior public speaking skills, becoming Captain of Everett's undefeated joint debating team. The team won prizes in the annual speaking contests in 1904 and 1905 including a gold metal in 1904. He also played football for Everett and was part of the 1903 championship team, and would be once described as a 'football star" 28 years later. He managed the team in 1904. While at high school, Elmer worked for several newspapers including the Boston Globe, Boston Journal, Everett Republican, and Everett Herald. In 1905, Elmer graduated from Everett High School as class orator (114, 204, 214). He would later become a founder and editor of the Everett Gazette (215).

Thomas BRAY was a country doctor who practiced medicine for many years yet was not an educated physician (230). 177 says that it was Thomas the father of this Thomas who was the physician. bullet Thomas BRAY Yeoman was born on 19 Jan 1658 in Gloucester, Essex, MA. (1084)(1241) Savage (472) says he was born 19 Jan of Feb 1659. Leland Proctor cites BOTH 19 Jan 1658/59 AND 9 Oct 1658/59 on the same page! He in 1690 in Probably in Essex Co, MA (Ipswich?).(1242) Thomas inherited 10 £ and land at Long Cove when his father died in 1690 (230). He married to Mary EMERSON on 23 Dec 1686 in Ipswich, Essex, MA.(1084) (973) (1245)(1246) It is not at all certain whom Thomas BRAY married except that her name was Mary. According to George Sedgley, various genealogists have suggested that he married Mary EMERSON, Mary WILSON, Mary SYMONDS, or second Mary COLLINS. Sedgley argues for COLLINS (183). Genealogist William BRAY makes a better case for Mary EMERSON (230). When they were married, The couple received a gift of 100 £ from Mary's wealthy parents (230). Kristen is descended from two son, Thomas and John BRAY. Children were: Thomas BRAY, John BRAY, Daniel BRAY, Nathaniel BRAY, Moses BRAY, Aaron BRAY Yeoman, Mary BRAY, Sarah BRAY, Abigail BRAY.

bullet Thomas BRAY was born about 1604 in England.(1247) Thomas Bray Of England was almost certainly born in the western part of the country which was "full of Brays" at the time. The genealogist William Bray believes it is most likely that Thomas came from Plymouth, Devon, England. He also makes a good argument for Thomas' birth in 1604 as opposed to 1614 cited be many other genealogists. Thomas BRAY was an early settler of Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was the very first BRAY in America. Even today, there is a Bray Street and Bray Hill in Gloucester (230). He emigrated before 1640 to Plymouth Colony.(1248) He left London probably in or before 1640 and sailed to Plymouth, MA among a group of men led by Reverend Richard Blinman. Most of these men who Puritans who left England to escape religious persecution. He would live among these men the rest of hi life. Blinman and some of his followers were made freemen of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1641-42. In 1642, they left for Cape Ann and became the founders of Gloucester and built the First Church where Reverend Blinman ministered until 1649 (230, 177). He appeared in court on 7 Dec 1641 in Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony. (1249)(1250) I strongly suspect but need to confirm that my Thomas BRAY, who resided in Plymouth Colony from 1640 (or earlier) to 1642, was the Thomas BRAY of Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony who was found guilty of adultery. Both live in Plymouth Colony at the right time, both are single, and my Thomas moves to Salem, arguably to start his life over.

Here is the story:

On this day, Thomas BRAY of Yarmouth, "a single person," and Anne LINCEFORD (wife of Francis) are changed with adultery. They both confess and are sentenced to be severely whipped at the public post (presumably in Plymouth) then again at Yarmouth. In addition, they must wear the letters "AD" (for Adulterer) on a conspicuous part of their upper garments as long as they are in the colony. If they fail to do so, they shall be whipped on each such occasion. He moved in 1642 to Cape Ann Side (later Beverly), Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (1242) Thomas settled near the Gloucester meeting house. In 1647, he acquired 3 additional acres of marshland on the south side of Little River (230). He six acres in Gloucester at the head of the Little River in 1647 in Gloucester, Essex, MA. (1251)(1242) This was the first of several plots of land purchased. In 1651 he purchased "a quarter acre in the bottom on the north side of Coro-Island Marsh 'for a house to be sett on'" (230). In 1650, the entire population of Gloucester consisted of 82 settlers including Thomas (231). He settled not far from where his descendants continued to live and do business over 300 years later. Gloucester today has a "Bray Hill" and a "Bray Street." Thomas was in the King Phillip's War according to direct descendent Professor Verrill of Yale. He signed a will on 20 Nov 1672.(1252) (1253) Thomas left his wife Mary "all my goods, cattle, houseing, orchards and lands." He also left some additional land for his sons John Nathaniel, and Thomas. He left about 10 £ each to his daughters. He left, according to his inventory, £133 after 20 Nov 1672 in Gloucester, Essex, MA.(1254) He died on 30 Nov 1691 in Gloucester, Essex, MA. (1255)(1256) (1257)(1258) He was a Ship builder/carpenter and farmer in Gloucester, Essex, MA. (1242)(1259)

He married to Mary/Marie WILSON on 3 May 1646 in Gloucester, Essex, MA.(1260) (1261)(1084) (1262)(1263) Glouceter Vital Records (507, page 580) actually says 3 Mar 1646, which is a good source but I go with the others. Thomas must have wanted a son named after him in the worst way because he name a third Thomas after the first two died.
