the is year he was admonished for his word. He moved on 19 Mar 1649/50 to Chebacco
(later southern Ipswich), Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(2164)(2165) He moved to
a 40 acres farm purchased from John Burnham, whom he later brought suit. He
appeared in court in 1657.(2166) In
this year, Stephen JORDAN and Robert CROSS were both sued by Gov....... Bradstreet.
He had previously entrusted them with the care of 30 sheep. Their care seems
to have been taken over by the sons of Robert who were careless and may have
allowed the death of many of the sheep. He took the oath of a freeman in 1658
in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(2167)
(2168) He appeared in court in
1663.(2169) Robert was further embittered
with the magistrates when two of his sons were jailed and set in stocks for training
day misbehavior that Robert called "nothing." He appeared in court
in 1664.(2170)
(2171) Cross was not happy with Martha because she had developed a
relationship with William Durkee. Martha left home to live with her sister Elizabeth.
Elizabeth consulted Goodman Story, who advised Cross told her Robert that Martha
was in a sorrowful condition to and advised him to permit her to marry. Cross
not only disapproved but sued William Durkee for abusing his daughter. Durkee
counter sued that Cross had withdrawn his consent after giving it. Whatever
the result of the suits, William and Martha married anyway. He Slave or indentured
servant owner Owned 2 servants, N. Vauden & L. Clinton. Vauden was fined
£40, branded/collared for running away. about 1670 in Ipswich, Essex, MA.
(2172) According to Cross (617), "Robert
Cross had two bound servants, Nicholas Vauden and Lawrence Clinton. Vauden ran
away several times, each time being pursued, captured and returned, and in 1670
he was fined 40 pounds, branded on the forehead and forced to wear a collar.
Clinton married an aging spinster who bought off his remaining time. Her family
sued Cross, saying that he had connived with Clinton to get her money. They won
the case but when Cross appealed he matter he won the review. Clinton meanwhile
departed happily to Rhode Island and Connecticut for greener pastures!!"
He appeared in court before 1685.(2173)
He successfully sued Thomas Wells for slander after Wells called Cross
a "cheating knave." He appeared in court in Jun 1693 in Ipswich,
Essex, MA.(2174)
(2175) According to Guilford (617), Robert CROSS Sr had purchased
40 acres of farmland from John BURMAN Jr. The bounds became disputed and, following
several disputes, CROSS sued BURMAN and for neighbors for trespass and "the
recovery of 30 acres of land at Ipswich." Robert won, the case was appealed,
and the sentence was upheld. He appeared in court in May 1694 in Boston, Suffolk,
MA.(2176) According to Guilford (617),
John BURMAN Jr appealed the suit he lost to Robert CROSS concerning ownership
of 30 acres of land at Ipswich but the case was upheld. He died between May
1694 and 4 Dec 1710 in Ipswich, Essex, MA.(2177)
(2178)
(2179) There is no doubt that Robert CROSS lived to a good old age,
but whereas Cross (734) says he died 8 feb 1692/93, Giulford (617) says that
in court in either 1693 or 1694, he testified that "I am the ancientest
man of the first proprietor that ever lived on the south side of the Chebacco
River." He Cross bcame "paranoid" that the Ipswich court was
acting unfairly agasit him. in Ipswich, Essex, MA.
(2180) According to Guilford (617), over the years, Cross had several
run ins with the Ipswich court and believed that he was mistreated: fined necessarily,
that the authorities were keeping the court fees, and that his sons were 'set
in stocks and punished for nothing." Parents:

(2224) In the 1900 census, in the column labeled Relationship to Head of Household, John CUSTER is labeled H, Louisa as W, the children as S or D, Henry as FL, and Annie as DL. I assume that FL is father-in-law and DL is daughter-in-law. This makes Louisa a daughter of Henry.

Abraham
(abbe) DAMESEK was born on 25 May 1904 in Bronx, Bronx, NY.
(2226) Abraham DAMESEK was born to Russian immigrants (now Latvia
and Lithuania) in New York City. Like all of my grandparents, his was the last
generation to be delivered at home by midwives, rather than in a hospital by
doctors. Everyone called grandpa "Abbe." In fact, I never knew his
name was Abraham until I saw his birth certificate 18 years after he died.
He was a pianist before 1941 in New York, New York, NY.
(2227)(2228)
(2229)(2230) All but Mike
played piano, unlike their parents, Max and Becky, who did not. Sam and Abbe
used to play piano together when they were young at silent movie houses to add
atmosphere to the screen story. This required considerable improvisation. As
they became adults, Abbe continued his piano but Sam did not. Alex told me that
Abbe was a wonderful storyteller.
He married to Sadie Gertrude (Sally) KEMPLER on 3 Apr 1932 in New York, New York, NY.(2228) In 1931, Sally would play cello in Yorkville to 3am and take the subway home. One night, while waiting for a train on the 125th street elevated subway platform for the train to the Bronx, a man walked up to her and said, "I think we have a friend in common, Sam Schwartz." When the guy mentioned Sam, grandma knew he was on the level. Grandma let the man take her home. For the next 6 months, most of the courtship occurred between 3 and 6am. Grandma and the man would drink a little of the milk which came in the morning, leading her mother Jennie to suspect that a poor person was doing it. The man's named was Abbe and later would be my grandfather. One mourning they were necking and Abbe said, "Let's get married or something." So grandma replied, "Let's get married or nothing!" There was later a more formal proposal. Sally was married in NYC in an orthodox synagogue (at her father's insistence). The reception was held at a restaurant owned by a man named Greenspan. One of the guests that attended her wedding was Arthur Tracey, a vaudeville entertainer known as The Street Singer. Abbe was his arranger and accompanist. Tracey sang popular songs in several languages. Sally became proficient in Yiddish by listening to Abbe's parents, since her own parents spoke mostly in English. As a child growing up in the 1970s, I remember that when the family got together, it was usually at grandma Sally's house. She was a good cook. They lived only a mile from my parent's house and I used to visit fairly often, sometimes when I did not like what mom was having for dinner. I never really thought of grandpa and Grandma DAMESEK as old then because they were only in their 70s, whereas my Dad's parents were in their 90s and 100s. Even grandma Sally called grandpa Frank "The old man." We all got together at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It always took my father two trips to drive mom and me and his parents next door to Sally and Abbe's house because Dad had a pickup. Once on Thanksgiving it snowed two feet and it took dad nearly an hour to finish playing taxi driver. Children were: Esta DAMESEK.

(370) He died in May 1965.(370)
Died suddenly from spinal meningitis, probably contracted from a patient.
He was an anesthesiologist at hospital in New York, New York, NY. His parents
may have named him Meyer, but everyone just called him "Mike." He studied
in Bonn, Germany, Bologna, Italy, and Basil, Switzerland in the 1930s and learned
French, Italian, German and Latin. Mike was called skinny as a kid (28). Mike
was a physician, an anesthesiologist. Mike married Shirley and had two children.

DAMESEK was born on 15 Oct 1902 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
(2227)(370) He was a hardware
store owner in 1920. Like his father, Sam pursued the the hardware business.
He rented a store on Southern Boulevard in the Bronx. He later opened his own
glass and shade store, a few subway stops from his father's hardware store.
He was a part owner of Square Deal Supply Company about 1932 in Bronx, Bronx,
NY. Max and Sam merged their businesses, creating Square Deal Supply Company,
located at 1120 Southern Boulevard. He died on 18 Dec 1990.

Children were: Peshka (Phyllis) DAMESEK, Beverly DAMESEK, Raphael DAMESEK.
Samuel
DAMESEKHe married to Esther LEVINE before 1874. (2232)(2227) (2231) The date of the marriage is merely an estimate: I assumed they were married one year before the birth of their oldest child. Alex and Phyllis say Max had two older sisters (Chasha and Yetta) and one younger (Dora). Meyer DAMESEK was the informant on Max DAMESEK's Death Certificate who said Max's parents were Samuel and Esther LEVINE. Alex DAMESEK also said that Max's father was Samuel, but he did not know the wife's name. According to Alex DAMESEK (28), all of Samuel's children eventually emigrated to America, but not together. Children were: Chasha DAMESEK, Yetta DAMESEK, Yitzik Mendel (Max) DAMESEK, Dora DAMESEK, DAMESEK.

Yitzik
Mendel (Max) DAMESEK was born on 3 Sep 1877 in Dvinsk, Russia.
(2232)(2227)
(2226)(251) My grandfather
told me that his father was Max DAMESEK and that he was born in Dvisk, Russia.
That city is now known as Dauagavpils, Latvia. According to Neal RIEMER (58),
however, this was Max's adopted American names, and his real name was Itzik Mendel
DAMESEK. Itzik is Hebrew for Isaac. The birthdate is according to Meyer DAMESEK,
the informant on Max's Death Certificate. The year, 1877, is confirmed by Abbe
DAMESEK's Birth Certificate (16) and Alex DAMESEK (28) He emigrated on 3 Jun
1902 to New York, New York, NY.(2227)
(2233)
(2234) Came aboard the SS Friesland which left Antwerp on 24 May 1902.
He came alone, which contradicts family lore that that the family came together
with baby Samuel 6 months old. It could be that I have thew wrong "Yitzik
DAMESHIK" as it shows he was born in 1875, not 1877. On the other hand,
it says he is Russian and resided in Dvinsk. On the other hand, family lore was
than he resided in St. Petersburg before coming over. He resided 130 Norfolk
Street about 1903 in New York, New York, NY.(2227)
They first lived in a predominately Jewish neighbor on Manhattan's Lower
East Side heavily populated by new immigrants. He was a Painter between 1904
and 1913 in New York, New York, NY.(2233)
(2226) He may have worked as
a painter even later. He moved in 1912 to Bronx, Bronx, NY.
(2228) Max moved his family from the Lower east Side in Manhattan
to the Bronx. He was described as 5 foot 5 inches with dark complextion, brown
eyes, and brown hair on 5 Aug 1913 in New York, New York, NY.
(2233) Sally and Phyllis both said that he was a handsome man. He
was a part owner of Square Deal Supply Company about 1932 in Bronx, Bronx, NY.
Max and Sam merged their businesses, creating Square Deal Supply Company, located
at 1120 Southern Boulevard. He resided 811 Bryant Avenue before 1944 in Bronx,
Bronx, NY.(2232) Max and Alex lived
in the upstairs of a two family house located in the Hunts Point section of the
Bronx until they died. Sam, Mollie and their children lived downstairs where
the kids could run around without disturbing the grandparents. He died on 18
Oct 1944 in Bronx, Bronx, NY.(2232)
At the age of 67, Max DAMESEK died of lung cancer first diagnosed two years
previously. He was buried on 19 Oct 1944 in Ridgewood, Queens, NY.
(2232) He was a hardwarestore owner in Bronx, Bronx, NY. Max later
rented a store on in the Bronx that he turned into a hardware store. "Boulevard
Glass and Shade" sold glass, windows, shades, plumbing, carpets and paint.
The family lived in an apartment in the back of the store. CHECK NAME OF STORE
- SAM OWNED HIS ON HARDWARE STORE A FEW BLOCKS AWAY. He resided Southern Boulevard
in Bronx, Bronx, NY. The family lived in an apartment in the back of "Boulevard
Glass and Shade." Parents: Samuel DAMESEK and
Esther LEVINE.He married to
Sura Rifka (Becky) RIEMER about 1900 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
(2227)(2231) After arriving
in the US, it is possible that Max and Becky never contacted their respective
parents again. They certainly did not contact them by telephone, according to
Alex and Phyliis, which was rare then in Vilna. It is likely that Max and Becky
spoke Yiddish, Russian, Hebrew, and English, but at home, Max and Rebecca spoke
only Yiddish and some broken English. Grandma Sally says she reamed most of her
Yiddish from them, not her own parents.
Max sang in a choir called the Halevi Singing Society as a tenor. Once they sang
together with Enrico Caruso at New York's Metropolitan Opera House. Max enjoyed
playing cards and "liked the ladies" according to Phyllis (026).
Max was not a religious man, but the DAMESEKs did celebrate traditional Jewish
holidays (Rosh Hosanna, Yom Kipper, and Pesach/Passover) and eventually Thanksgiving.
He was interested in politics. He was a socialist.
Grandma Sally said Rebecca was a good cook and kept and immaculate house. She
loved her dog Tippy, a Boston Bull which was white with black spots. Rebecca
was a housewife and cared for four boys.
I met Sam, Lex, Raphael, and Phyllis when I was 19, when they came up from NYC
for Abbe's funeral. I remember liking Raphael. I started speaking with Phyllis
in 1997 regarding genealogy. She is very nice. Children were:
Samuel DAMESEK, Abraham (abbe) DAMESEK,
Meyer (Mike) DAMESEK, Alex DAMESEK.

Oliver
DEEBLE was christened on 22 Jul 1610 in St. Germain, Cornwall, England.
(2303) Parents:
Robert DEEBLE and Unknown.
Robert
DEEBLE was born about 1585 in England.(2304)
According to VanBuren Lamb (202) he was from the West Counties (Devon,
Dorset, Somerset, Cornwall). He found one record stating that his birthplace
was Somersetshire but was unable to find proof. He notes that many Dibble wills
from the 1400s were destroyed in the blitz. Robert was the first of the surname
in America from which most DIBBLEs descend. Deeble is the old English spelling
for "dibble" which was a device used to set beans in the ground. Three
deebles appear on the DIBBLE coat of arms. This coat of arms is also found on
the tombstone of Reverend Samuel DIBBLE who died in 1750 in Plymouth, England.
He became a member Dorchester (England) Congregational Church in 1629 in New
Hospital, Plymouth, Devon, England.(2305)
Some of the members of the congregation, under the leadership of Rev.
John Warham, left Weymouth, England for America. Robert and his wife were original
members of the congregregation. He resided before 1633 in Weymouth, Dorset,
England.(2306)
(2307) He emigrated on 24 Jun 1633 to Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay
Colony.(2290)
(2308) The name of the ship Robert and his wife arrived on is not
known but he possibly arrived on this date, at roughly the age of 55, with 78
other passengers of his congregation. They left Weymouth, Dorset, England 20
Mar 1635 under the Reverend Joseph HULL with several of his children (his son
Robert came as an indentured servant) and settled in Dorchester, MA (202).
He became a member of the Dorchester Congregation between 1634 and 28 Feb 1642
in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA.(2290) Original
members. He Receives 30 acres in the division of a hill between Roxbury and
Dorchester on 4 Jan 1635 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA.
(2290) He took the oath of a freeman on 6 May 1635 in Dorchester,
Suffolk, MA.(2290) He was a Bayliff
of Dorchester (tax collector) between Mar 1638 and 1641 in Dorchester, Suffolk,
MA.(2290) He became a member Dorchester
Congregational Church in Feb 1642 in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(2305) Listed as members in this year, but
had been original members of the congregation since 1629 in England. He died
after 1652 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA.(2309)
Regarding Robert and his wife, VanBuren Lamb states, "I have found
no further record of them in New England, so it may be possible that they returned
to England with other dissatisfied members of the congregation after their leader
and many of their friend removed to Windsor, Conn." He was educated Probably
better than most being a balif and able to sign his name.
(2305) His signature appears on the flyleaf of the History of Dorchester,
Mass. He married to Unknown about 1606 in England. I assumed that they were married a year before the birth of their oldest child. Children were: Robert DIBBLE, Oliver DEEBLE, Francis DIBBLE, Thomas DEBLE, John DIBBLE, Abraham DIBBLE.

Mary
DEERING was born on 16 Nov 1652.(2314)
Savage says it was 16 Jan 1653. Parents: Samuel
DEERING and Mary RAY.
Rachel
DEERING was born on 30 Aug 1659 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA.
(2315) Rachel DEERING became George's stepdaughter (when her mother
Mary NEWCOMB Deering married George SPEAR) AND later married Ebenezer SPEAR,
George's 4th child (117). She died on 16 Oct 1717 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA.
(2316) She was buried in Central Cem, Randolph,
Norfolk, MA.(2317) Parents:
Samuel DEERING and Mary NEWCOMB.She married
to Ebenezer SPEAR on 16 Jul 1679 in Braintree, Norfolk,
MA.(2318) In 1675, four months after
Ebenezer's mother died, his father George remarried the widow Mary NEWCOMB Deering.
Mary's daughter Rachel DEERING, was 15 when her mother married George SPEAR.
Ebenezer, at age 20, suddenly had a stepsister, although he probably was not
even living home at this time. Four years later, Ebenezer married his stepsister
Rachel (117).
On 29 Oct 1678, Ebenezer took the Oath of Allegiance, as id his father George
on the same day (118).
Mary (Bass) Webb Copeland (daughter of John Bass and Ruth ALDEN) was born 11
Feb 1669/70 (117). She was the widow of Christopher Webb and William Copeland
(118). When she was about 48, and Ebenezer was 63, they married on 2 May 1718
in Braintree (117). Like his father, Ebenezer second marriage occurred only months
after his first wife's death. Unfortunately, it was a short marriage. Less than
a year later, Ebenezer died on 21 Mar 1719 in Braintree at the age of 64 (117).
His widow Mary was only 50.
On 10 Jan 1697/98, when Ebenezer was 43, "he signed an agreement of the
men of Braintree to defend the ancient rights of the town against the claims
of Boston." This had something to do with the fact that Braintree had purchased
land from "Boston gentlemen." Failure to take the oath carried a fine
of £5 (118).
In 1702, he sold land with a house located in Braintree's northern precinct,
now Quincy, to Nathaniel Owen (118).
In 1715, SPEAR deeded part of the farm in Braintree's southern precinct, now
Randolph, to his third son Joseph (118).
In 1717, SPEAR deeded his remaining lands to his second son Samuel and fifth
son Benjamin. Gideon SPEAR, Ebenezer's first son, did not apparently inherent
land from his father - at least during his lifetime (118).
On 24 Feb 1724/25, Ebenezer's second wife, Mary Bass Webb Copeland SPEAR, sold
the land (118). Children were: Ebenezer SPEAR,
Mary SPEAR, Samuel SPEAR,
Rachel SPEAR, Joseph SPEAR,
Nathaniel SPEAR, Abigail SPEAR,
Benjamin SPEAR, Deering SPEAR.

Her marriage to Samuel DEERING was 10 Nov 1657 according to Savage and 10 Nov or 9 Dec accoring to Ferris (615). Children were: Rachel DEERING, Elizabeth DEERING.
He married to Bethiah BAXTER in 1647. (2328) Children were: Bethiah DEERING .
He married to Mary RAY on 5 Sep 1651. (2329) Savage say it was 15 Nov 1651. Children were: Hannah DEERING, Mary DEERING, Sarah DEERING.
Sarah
DEERING was born on 30 Jun 1657.(2330)
(2331) She died in Jul 1657.
