Nineteen people were hung on Gallows Hill and 80 year-old Giles Cory was pressed to death over a period of two days for refusing to enter a plea. Later that year, Joseph and the other jurors signed a letter acknowledging their error and asking forgiveness from the victims of the trials and of God, stating that they were "sadly deluded and mistaken .. and distressed in our minds and do therefore humbly beg forgiveness." In 1859, John Brown raided Harper's Ferry was and his body would soon be a old "moldering" in its grave. The southern states would soon threaten succession. This may have had an impact on John. He was a Shoemaker on 15 Jan 1857 in Newburyport, Essex, MA.⁽³¹⁴⁰⁾ He served as a 8th MA Infantry, Company A. Died while attending 30th Reunion 1892 in 1861 in Civil War (Union).⁽³¹³⁹⁾⁽³¹⁴¹⁾ John was the first Newburyport man to enlist. John EWIN joined the "Cushing Guards" which became the 8th Massachusetts Infantry (3-month tour) Company A, all volunteers (149). The 8th was mustered into service on 15 Apr and 30 Apr (150). Why two dates? According to Edgar Spear, John came from a family of southern sympathizers who disowned him as a result of his decision to join the Union.

Ironically, enlisting brought John right back to Maryland. The 8th conducted a three-month tour rebuilding the railway between Annapolis and Annapolis Junction. Upon his return, he was promoted to Second Sergeant. He was muster out on 1 Aug 1861. As a result of the work on the railway. Upon his return, he failed his physical to reenlist because he was so "strained" from his previous tour and had contracted rheumatism. For the remainder of the war, he recruited young men and found substitutes for drafted men who were needed by their families. For his efforts, John became beloved and well known throughout Newburyport. After completing his three-month tout, John was promoted to Second sergeant (149).

8th REGIMENT INFANTRY (MILITIA, 3 MONTHS): One of the first four Regiments to respond to the call after opening of hostilities. Gathered at Boston April 16, 1861. Left State for Washington April 18. Moved from Philadelphia to Annapolis, MD., via Perryville, April 20-21; then march to Washington, D.C., April 24-26, and duty there until May 15. At Relay House until July 29. Moved to Boston July 29-30, and mustered out August 1, 1861 (140). He moved in 1868 to South Newmarket, Rockingham, NH.⁽³¹³⁹⁾ He was ill with Rheumatism about 1880.⁽³¹³⁹⁾ John's rheumatism, contracted as a soldier, forced him to become bedridden for most of the last 12 years of his life (149). He moved about 1885 to Newburyport, Essex, MA.⁽³¹³⁹⁾ He moved back to Newburyport with his wife and two unmarried daughters (149). He died on 21 Oct 1892 in Washington, DC.⁽³¹³⁸⁾⁽³¹⁶⁾ In 1892, John was in poor health but badly wanted to attend the GAR was reunion of his regiment in Washington DC. It had been 30 years since John had been in Washington, but going was against the advice of his doctor, who warned that the trip would kill him. He left anyway a week later. It was said that watching the parades, visiting his former comrades, and living in the home of his cousin LeBlond BURRETT, made him quit happy. On 14 Mar 1892, after taking a short walk, John EWIN became very ill. Relatives sent his wife a telegram explaining that John was close to death. Margaret arrived on 19 Mar 1892. Shortly after speaking to his wife Margaret, John Moorhead EWIN died at the home of his cousin, LeBlond BURRETT, at 1831 6th Street Northwest, Washington, DC. The primary cause of death was chronic nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) and the immediate cause was (UREMIA?). He was buried somewhere in Baltimore with his parents and a brother who had preceded him (149, 160, 200). He was buried on 24 Oct 1892 in Baltimore, Baltimore, MD.⁽³¹³⁸⁾ Parents: John EWIN and Margaret MOORHEAD.

I am reluctant to accept this information since Ewin's work is organized poorly and errors would not surprise me.
