(3260)(3261) (3262)(3263) He Indians attacked Groton and burned Matthias' house and others to the ground on 2 Mar 1676 in Groton, Middlesex, MA.(3264) (3265) The King Phillip War had broke out in 1675. By June, news had spread that the outlying Massachusetts settlements were coming under attack. On this night, the Indians attacked Groton. Many settlers were killed and the rest fled the village. The Indians burned all but four buildings to the ground. About two weeks later, Captain Still led the survivors away in a convoy to Concord in basically a forced migration. Families placed what belongings remained in carts and pushed them to Concord. There were 60 carts and they stretched for 2 miles. It is believed that Matthias' family was among them including his wife, and those children living with them: Sarah (13), Samuel (6), my ancestor Abigail (5), and Jonathan (1). In this vulnerable state, on March 17, the procession of carts came under attack. The Indians fired upon the front of the convey and killed two more settlers but that was there only loss. The experience was no doubt terrifying. The residents of Groton would live in Concord for the next TWO YEARS, but where they stayed is not recorded. He moved on 13 Mar 1676 to Concord, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(3266) (3267) On this date occurred the third attack on Groton (the first and second occurred on March 2 and March 9). He moved in 1678 to Groton, Middlesex, MA.(3268) (3269) After two years, many of the original Groton settlers living in Concord, including Matthias and his three sons, went back to Groton to clear, plant, and rebuild. His rebuilt house stood until 1820. He was Constable before 1684 in Groton, Middlesex, MA. (3270)(3271) At the time, this position primarily involved tax collection. He held this office until he was 72. He signed a will on 15 Jan 1689 in Groton, Middlesex, MA.(3272) (3273) Stearns (675) says it was on 12 Jan 1689 but the transcript in Farnsworth (599) clearly say 15 Jan 1689. He died on 21 Jan 1689 in Groton, Middlesex, MA.(3274) (3275)(3276) (3277) He left, according to his inventory, ~ £102 (includes house, barn, meadow, oxen & 4 cows). Note: likely lost all in 1676 Groton burning on 4 Feb 1689 in Groton, Middlesex, MA. (3278)(3279) Those participating in the inventory included another ancestor, Gershom HOBART. bullet Thomas FORD was born about 1591 in England.(3372) He resided before 1619 in Bridport, Dorset, England. (3373) He moved in 1619 to Dorchester, Dorset, England. (3374) He became a member Holy Trinity Church between 1619 and 1630 in Dorchester, Dorset, England.(3375) The rector of Holy Trinity Church at the time, was Rev John White, "who was so deeply interested and influential in the early emigration to New England as to have been called 'The founder of Massachusetts'." He emigrated on 30 May 1630 to Nantasket, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (3376)(3377) A short time after the death of his last child, Thomas FORD left England on the Mary and John on 20 Mar 1629/30 with his wife and three surviving children, all daughters (Joane, Abigail and Hepzibah) and stepson Aaron COOKE. It carried 140 immigrants (60 families) led by Rev. John White, "The Founder of Massachusetts." It arrived 70 days later, during which time the immigrants received daily preaching, at Nantasket Point, which was uninhabited and barren, and described by passenger Roger CLAPP (brother of my ancestor Jane CLAPP) as a "forlorn place in the wilderness." This was 12 miles across the Bay from where they expected to stand, about 8 miles from where Boston is today or about where Watertown is today. The Mary and John was part of the Gov. Winthrop Fleet (he arrived a bit later aboard the flagship Arabella 14 Jun 1630). He moved in Jun 1630 to Mattapan (later Dorchester, which was annexed to Boston 1869), Massachusetts Bay Colony. (3378) Although the immigrants had put their goods and cattle ashore at Nantasket, that location was fairly undesirable, so they went through the expense of re-boarding and resettling to a point called Mattapan by the Indians (later changed to Dorchester, now the neighborhood of South Boston). Dorchester was only the third settlement in New England. He took the oath of a freeman on 18 May 1631 in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (3379)(3380) He was held many public offices between 1633 and 1654 in Windsor, Hartford, CT.(3381) (3382) Held the following public offices during this time period:
4 Mar 1633 Elected one of four surveyors to set the boundry between Boston and Roxbury

24 May 1635 Dorchester fence viewer
2 Nov 1635 Committee to lay out land
Before 1636 Cared for three bulls of the town herd

5 Apr 1638 Deputy to Connecticut General Court from Windsor
8 Feb 1640/41 Connecticut Committee on livestock
1644 Deputy to Connecticut General Court from Windsor
11 Apr 1654 Deputy to Connecticut General Court from Windsor He Thomas Ford must build 40 feet of double rail fence. on 3 Apr 1633 in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(3383) The town required each man to build 20 feet of double rail fence per cow owned or be fined 5 shillings per cow. Thomas Ford owned two cows. He moved between 5 Jul 1636 and 1637 to Windsor, Connecticut Colony.(3384) (3385) For whatever reason, Thomas Ford waited until 1636 to emigrate to Connecticut. In 1635, no doubt he heard about the Great Removal of settlers from the Boston area to the Connecticut River Valley. Among the 60 men, women and child who traversed New England through an unbroken wilderness for about 14 days were a few of my other ancestors: their are records of Richard LYMAN (Roxbury to Hartford) and Robert REYNOLDS (Boston to Wethersfield) making the journey. Robert ROSE (Watertown to Wethersfield) and Samuel WAKEMAN (Roxbury to Hartford) came in 1635 as well and so problem made the difficult journey. Richard FRISBIE came in 1635 from New Haven. Those who came in the Great Migration arrived too late to plant crops and many resorted to living in huts or hand built caves along the river bank. Winter was severe and came early. Supplies, which were supposed to come by boat up the river, were lost at sea. There was much suffering and some settlers chose to leave Connecticut during the winter for settlements in Massachusetts. A number for Dorchester men, including Thomas FORD, wisely waited until the summer of 1636 to emigrate. He Through land grants and purchases, Thomas Ford acquired hundreds of acres of land. between 1637 and 1642 in Connecticut Colony.(3386) Ford acres hundreds of acres on the east side of the Connecticut River, the northern third of what is now Windsor, , the southern part of Suffield, what is now the Village of Windsor Locks, and 50 acres of what is now Simsbury. He was Elected to court committee on 5 Apr 1638 in Windsor, Connecticut Colony. (3387) The committee included residents of Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield. He was Appointed to committee to oversee the building of the first jail in Hartford in 1640 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony. (3388) He was Served on 14 juries and two grand juries between 1641 and 1662 in Windsor, Connecticut Colony. (3389) (juries between 1641 and 1649, plus grand juries in 1643 and 1662). He was Chosen as one of seven to "agitate the affayres of the towne" on 3 Jun 1642 in Windsor, Connecticut Colony. (3390) He moved about 1644 to Hartford, Connecticut Colony. (3391) An early resident of Hartford but not an original proprietor. He was an Innkeeper between 1644 and 1652 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony. (3392) According to Love (680), a 1644 law establishing inns for the entertainment of passengers and strangers. He concludes that Thomas Ford may hav been among a few men nominated and elected to be innkeeper, but no one can know for sure because of lost records. According to Ferris (615), The inn was located on the southwest corner of State and Front streets and was the home of Ann's former husband Thomas Scott. He appeared in court in 1646/47 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony.(3393) Sue for slander by Magistrate William Whiting for slander and fine £4 and court costs. He moved about 1652 to Windsor, Connecticut Colony. (3394) He During this period he purchased several properties in Hartford County between 1653 and 1663 in Hartford County. (3395) He Granted 50 acres at Massacoe on 8 Sep 1653. (3396) He was a took inventories between 1660 and 1670 in Windsor, Hartford, CT.(3397) He appeared in court on 14 May 1663.(3398) After selling his property to Mr. Fitch, Ford requested the court some allowance for having forfeited his property by mortgage. He was granted £30. He moved in 1672 to Northampton, Hampshire, MA.(3399) (3400) He died on 28 Nov 1676 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA.(3401) (3402) He left, according to his inventory, £567 including £369 in real estate on 4 Jan 1677 in Northampton, Hampshire, MA.
