bullet Susannah GOODENOW Parents: Thomas GOODENOW and Jane RUDDICK.

bullet Thomas GOODENOW was born about 1608 in Shaftsbury, Wiltshire, England. (4070)(4071) Emigration records say he was 30 in 1638. He emigrated on 17 Jul 1638 to New England. (4072) Banvard (694) says he came in the Confidence. The ship left Southampton 11 April 1638 with 109 to 111 people (sources vary). He came with wife Jane, son Thomas (age 1) and his sisters Ursala and Dorothy. He returned to England in 1656 amnd came back on the Speedwell. He moved between 17 Jul 1638 and 31 Dec 1638 to Sudbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (4073) He took the oath of a freeman in 1643 in Sudbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(4074) He Return trip in 1656 in England.(4075) Returned to England and came back with a 16 year old Nathaniel GOODENOW, who may have been his nephew. Came back on the Speedwell. He moved after 1656 to Marlborough, Middlesex, MA.(4076) He was one of the first petitioners for the town and an early settler. He was selectman between 1661 and 1664 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA.(4077) (4078) Served in 1661, 1662, and 1664. He signed a will on 29 Sep 1666 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA. (4079) He died in Oct 1666 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA.(4080) He left, according to his inventory, on 24 Oct 1666 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA. (4081) Parents: Thomas A. GOODENOW and Ursula FAYME/HAYME.

He married to Jane RUDDICK before 1637 in Shaftsbury, Wiltshire, England. (4082)(4083) Source provides first name only. Children were: Elizabeth GOODENOW , Thomas GOODENOW, Nathnaiel GOODENOW, Mary GOODENOW, Abigail GOODENOW, Susanna GOODENOW, Sarah GOODENOW, Joseph GOODENOW, Samuel GOODENOW, Susannah GOODENOW, Jane GOODENOW, Elizabeth GOODENOW.

He married to JOANNA.(4084)

bullet Thomas GOODENOW was christened on 13 Mar 1636/37 in Shaftsbury, Wiltshire, England. (4085) Parents: Thomas GOODENOW and Jane RUDDICK.

bullet Thomas A. GOODENOW was born in 1565 in Donhead St. Andrew, Wiltshire, England. (4086) He signed a will in 1593 in Wiltshire, England.(4087) Bequeathed to Simon two sheep, to his youngest daughters X pounds each, to Nathaniel and Thomas one heifer each, to sons Ralph and John one heifer and two sheep each, and the remainder of his estate to his wife Ursala. He died on 6 Feb 1617/18 in Donhead St. Andrew, Wiltshire, England.(4088) He left, according to his inventory, 125 pounds (movable items included 20 yound beasts, 5 horses, sheep, and 3 pigs). after 6 Feb 1617/18 in Donhead St. Andrew, Wiltshire, England.(4089) He was a husbandman. (4090) Theodore Banvard (694) claims that Thomas is the son of John GOODENOW and his wife Margaret. Banvard says that according to John's will, he had two other children, William and daughter Julyan. He then acknowledges that "The names Thomas and John continue down the line; not William and Julyan, the names of two of the three surviving children, nor Margaret, the mother's name. Hence, more work is needed to prove the parentage of Thomas A. GOODENOW." There is another problem. There is no such town as Ebbsborne or Wake in Wiltshire County or any county in England. In fact, a search on these towns on the Internet yields only genealogical sites discussing John GOODENOW. To me that is very suspect and casts further doubt of the credibility of this lineage as claimed by Banvard.

Personally, I do not think there is enough evidence to warrant a claim that John and Margaret are the parents of Thomas A. GOODENOW.

He married to Ursula FAYME/HAYME about 1593. Estimated based upon the age of their eldest child, assuming he was born in 1594. Children were: Ralph GOODENOW, John GOODENOW, Simon GOODENOW, Nathaniel GOODENOW, Thomas GOODENOW, Ursala GOODENOW, Captain Edmund GOODENOW, Ward GOODENOW, Dorothy GOODENOW.

bullet Ursala GOODENOW died on 23 Apr 1653 in Sudbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (4091) Parents: Thomas A. GOODENOW and Ursula FAYME/HAYME.

bullet Abigail GRANNIS was born about 1669 in Hartford, Hartford, CT. (4092)(4093) Parents: Edward GRANNIS and Hannah WAKEFIELD.

bullet Ann GRANNIS was born in 1679 in Watertown, Litchfield, CT. Frederick Strong (451) cites the DOB for a Lydia Ann Grannis as 1689. I think maybe that this may be confusing to different wives. The date seems about 10 years too late. Also, it would appear that the World Family Tree software cites the DOB as Abt. 1679 in Watertown, Litchfield, CT, however Watertown was not settled until 1700. She was born in 1689 in New Haven, New Haven, CT. (4094) Frederick Strong (451) cites the DOB for a Lydia Ann Grannis as 1689. I think maybe that this may be confusing to different wives. The date seems about 10 years too late. Also, it would appear that the World Family Tree software cites the DOB as Abt. 1679 in Watertown, Litchfield, CT, however Watertown was not settled until 1700. She died on 6 Apr 1742. (4095) She died suddenly at age 53. Her stone reads, "Here we may see how soon death may surprise. Though well as Evening, dead as the sun doth rise." She was buried in Montowese Cemetery, New Haven, New Haven, CT.(4096) Parents: Edward GRANNIS and Hannah WAKEFIELD.

She married to Moses BROCKETT on 8 Jan 1706 in New Haven, New Haven, CT.(4097) (4098) Children were: Ann BROCKETT, Silence BROCKETT, Lydia BROCKETT, Moses BROCKETT, Samuel BROCKETT, Benjamin BROCKETT, Elizabeth BROCKETT, Mary BROCKETT, Abraham BROCKETT, Abigail BROCKETT, John BROCKETT, Ebenezer BROCKETT, Abel BROCKETT, Richard BROCKETT, Stephen BROCKETT, Sarah BROCKETT, Ichabod BROCKETT, Keziah BROCKETT.

bullet Edward GRANNIS was born about 1630 in England.(4099) (a calculation - Edward was older than 16 in 1649) He emigrated before 1649 to New England.(4100) He appeared in court on 2 Oct 1649 in New Haven, New Haven Colony. (4101) The first in court of Edward GRANNIS in America is his appearance in court. When Edward was about 20, he was fined 18d "for want of Worme, Scourer and Flints." New Haven had passed a law in 1639 requiring every male from 16 to 60 to own " a good serviceable gun ... and four or five good flints fitted foe every firelock piece, all in good order and ready for any sudden occasion, service, or view." He appeared in court on 1 Mar 1652 in New Haven, New Haven Colony.(4102) Edward appeared in court as a witness against Thomas Langden, who was accused of killing and eating three hogs belonging to Rev. Peter Prudden. He had apparently also threatened his wife with death if she told. At the time of his testimony, Edward was employed by John Wakefield, his father-in-law. "Edward Granest, Mr Wakefield's man, testifyeth that Goodwife Langden told him that if her husband was whipt by her meanes, if he came to her again, she must not expect to live ... Edward Granest further saith that at one time ... Goodman Langden beate his wife because she did not goe to weede corne." He moved in 1654 to Hartford, Connecticut Colony.(4103) (4104) Also lived in Farmington sometime during the following decade. He Purchased an Island in the Little River in 1664 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony.(4105) He moved in 1671 to Hadley, Hampshire, MA. (4106) He Sold an Island in the Little River in 1671 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony.(4107) He obtained property on 18 Mar 1671 in Hartford, Hartford, CT. (4108) Edward sold the three parcels of land that his wife Hannah and inherited from her father. He appeared in court in Mar 1676 in Hadley, Hampshire, MA.(4109) Edward GRANNIS was one of nine men charged with rioting at an assembly in Hadley in February "where there was a public affronting of authority in stopping and hindering of the execution of a sentence which was order by authority." It is not known who had been charged, or what the sentence was, but Edward GRANNIS was a leader in the protest against it. For his defiance or the law, he was sentenced to a whipped "twelve stripes, well laid on." This act was probably the reason why Edward left Hadley and moved back to New Haven soon after. He moved before 1677 to New Haven, New Haven, CT.(4110) He settled in an area now part of North Haven called Montowese. He became a member First Church of New Haven on 28 Jun 1696 in New Haven, New Haven, CT. (4111) He died on 10 Dec 1719 in New Haven, New Haven, CT. (4112)(4113) (4114) He was Episcopal in New Haven, New Haven Colony. (4115) He was a Cordwainer (tanner of leather), shoemaker in New Haven, New Haven, CT.(4116) (4117) He was buried in Montowese Cemetery, New Haven, New Haven, CT.(4118) The genealogist Frederick Strong states, "Edward and his family do not seem to have been in accord with some of the church-made laws of the Puritans and they did not hesitate to act in opposition to what they probably regarded as unreasonable restriction of personal liberty." Strong notes that no probate records exist but Edward probably died with some property.

He married to Hannah WAKEFIELD in 1662.(4119) (4120)(4121) Children were: Hannah GRANNIS, Mabel GRANNIS , Abigail GRANNIS, Sarah GRANNIS, John GRANNIS, Joseph GRANNIS, Ann GRANNIS.

He married to Elizabeth ANDREWS on 3 May 1655 in Hartford, Hartford, CT. (4122)(4123) (4124)(4125) Strong contradicts himself and also cites 3 May 1654. This date is also cited by Andrews (645). The genealogist Frederick Strong states, "Edward and his family do not seem to have been in accord with some of the church-made laws of the Puritans and they did not hesitate to act in opposition to what they probably regarded as unreasonable restriction of personal liberty." Children were: Joseph GRANNIS.

bullet Joseph GRANNIS was born on 31 Mar 1656 in Hartford, Hartford, CT. (4131)(4132) (4133) He appeared in court in Mar 1676 in Hadley, Hampshire, MA. (4134) Joseph was among 38 women and 30 men fined "for wearing silk in a flaunting manner." Other men were also fined "for long hair." This behavior violated a 25-year-old law upholding Puritan-based values. Joseph's mother had been fined for a similar offense two years previously. He died before 12 Mar 1677 in Hadley, Hampshire, MA.(4135) On this date, a second son of Edward was born and named Joseph, so it is presumed that the first had died. Parents: Edward GRANNIS and Elizabeth ANDREWS.
