bullet Sergeant David HAMILTON was born on 18 Dec 1756 in Sharon, Litchfield, CT. (4189)(4200) (4201)(4202) I have three birth dates for David:
1757 by his own testimony ("he was born ... in 1757, as he believes, and has a record of his age at home in his family bible" (1).
18 Dec 1756 cited by DAR Patriot Index (685). Also supported by David HAMILTON's family bible itself (in my possession). Note: the bible is copywrited 1828 (12).
15 Dec 1756 cited by Union Cemetery records at Ira, Cayuga, NY (111). He was described as 5'7" tall with a light complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair. in 1775.(4203) He served as a Pvt in CT State Troops. Sgt in 2nd CT Rgt Lt Dragoons between 1775 and 1780 in American Revolution (1775-1783).(4204) David enlisted with the Connecticut state troops in May 1775, reenlisted, enlisted with the Continental Army, was severely wounded at Germantown, taken prisoner, released, returned to his company, and discharged due in Nov 1780 to his disabilities received in battle. David's testimony, which seems to have been written with the assistance of an attorney, speaks glowingly of his service. David notes that he served as a Corporal, Sergeant, Dispatch Rider and Forage Master" and that he "saw and knew" Generals Washington, Lafayette, Lee, Pulaski, Benedict Arnold, and Wayne among others. Upon a closer read, however, it is evident that David spent most of his service marching, retreating, holding up for the winter, and recovering in hospitals. A "Forge Master" may have gathered wood and stolen chickens from civilians

In May, 1775, when David was about 18 years old, he left his home in Sharon to enlist. War had only just broken out and David enlisted early as a "private soldier" in the company of Connecticut state troops commanded by Captain William Hubbell, in a regiment commanded by Coronal Charles Webb. This tour simply included a "March to Boston." David was stationed in Charlestown until his five-month tour concluded. He was discharged and returned home, but soon reenlisted for another five months under Captain Simeon Smith in a regiment commanded by Colonel Bradley. This regiment saw more action. They marched first to New York, then to Bergen Point, where they were stationed Until New York and Long Island were given up to the enemy." They then retreated to Fort Lee, NJ where they remained until the British drove them out and forced a retreat across the Delaware to Trenton. The testimony is not clear as to whether David engaged the enemy at the Battles of Trenton or Princeton, but the day after the latter, David's term expired. He was discharged and went home (1).

On 15 Jan 1777, David enlisted for three months as a Corporal in the Army of the United Colonies (the Continental Army). He was in the company commanded by Captain Josiah Stoddard, in the Second Regiment of Light Dragoons commanded by Colonel Elisha Sheldon. Upon enlisting, his regiment lay at Whethersfield, CT for three months until the opening of the campaign in either April or May of 1777. In May agin enlisted for 42 months as a segeant in the same company. His regiment then marched to Philadelphia where David received orders to serve under the immediate Command of General Pulaski. His regiment then marched to Brandywine where they "engaged the enemy." They engaged again at the Battle of Germantown, PA where David was severely wounded, having been shot in the breast and wounded in the face by a broad sword (his horse was wounded as well). David submitted "certificates of surgeons" to prove permanent disability from war wounds. He was taken prisoner by the british who placed him in a hospital in Philadelphia. He remained there until the British evacuated Philadelphia, at which time they placed David on the prison-ship Enterprise and took him to New York where he was placed in another hospital (1, 239).

David was exchanged Nov 1778, rejoined his regiment in White Plains, and soon after marched to Durham, CT, where they quartered for the winter (8). During this month, David was promoted to Sergeant (239).

In the spring of 1779, his regiment marched on to the lines above New York on the Hudson River. They "continued during the whole season" then marched to Connecticut and quartered for the winter (at either Turkey Hill near Windsor or in Whethersfield again) (1).

In the spring of 1780, just after Rachel got pregnant with David's first child, his regiment again marched out on the lines above New York. Unfortunately, David never fully recovered from his previous wounds and his last two years of service were spent collecting forage for his regiment since he was "too feeble to engage in active service at the lines." His health worsened until, in late November 1780, David was discharged having served four years with the Continental Army (in addition to two 5-month tours with the Connecticut state troops). Curiously, in order to be discharged, David had to produce two "substitutes" to take his place. He received a written discharge “from said service but lost the same, amongst other papers, whilst on the Hudson River." David "very well remembers the words thereof," however, which he testified stated:
"Sergeant David HAMILTON, of the Second Regiment of the Light Dragoons, having faithfully served from the raising of the regiment to this date, and now having procured two able-bodied men, James Beers and Lockwood Dickerson, to serve in said regiment during the war, is hereby discharged from the Army. Given under my hand, November 1780." [Signed Elisha Sheldon, Colonel] (1).

On 26 Jan 1809, after two testimonials and an investigation, the court agreed David was an American Revolutionary War vet and awarded him a disability pension of $133.44/year for his war services, a healthy supplement to his $96/year disability pension (1, 241). He moved about 1781 to Columbia County, NY. (4204) He lived in Columbia Co for 4 or 5 years, Albany Co for about 20 years, Tioga Co for 5 years, and in Ira, Cayuga Co (1). He moved about 1785 to Albany County, NY.(4204) He lived in Columbia Co for 4 or 5 years, Albany Co for about 20 years, Tioga Co for 5 years, and in Ira, Cayuga Co (1). He moved about 1805 to Tioga County, NY. (4204) He lived in Columbia Co for 4 or 5 years, Albany Co for about 20 years, Tioga Co for 5 years, and in Ira, Cayuga Co (1). He moved about 1810 to Ira, Cayuga, NY. (4204) He lived in Columbia Co for 4 or 5 years, Albany Co for about 20 years, Tioga Co for 5 years, and in Ira, Cayuga Co (1). He died on 14 Mar 1840 in Ira, Cayuga, NY.(4205) (1532)(4206) (4207) (4208) The Hamilton bible (012) says he died 14 Mar 1840, but cemetery records say he died 12 Mar 1840 (111) and TAG claims 19 Mar 1840 (469). Beauchamp says he died in 1840 in Syracuse, but I think he was just generalizing to a larger locality. He was buried in Union Cemetery, Ira, Cayuga, NY. (1532) He was a Farmer in Sharon, Litchfield, CT. (4203) Parents: Samuel HAMILTON and Mary HAMILTON.

He married to Milicent MARKS on 19 Apr 1779 in Catskill, Greene, NY.(4189) (4209) (4210) Children were: Abigal HAMILTON, Lyman HAMILTON, Milicent HAMILTON, David HAMILTON, Luther HAMILTON, Mary HAMILTON, Pamela HAMILTON.

He married to Rachel CHURCHILL between 1803 and 1807. (4211)(4212) Beachamp (523) provides only the name of the spouse (Rachel CHURCHILL). The date range is my own estimate: 1803 is an early date for the death of Milicent MARKS. 1807 is when Sabrina HAMILTON was born. Most of what I know about David HAMILTON comes from only two sources. The first is his family bible, which records his own birth (although his birth predates the bible). The other are his military pension records which are unusually extensive. When Congress enacted a pension act for Revolutionary War veterans in ___, David was drawing a $96/year pension for his war-related disability and was eligible to claim his benefit for his war services. What probably would have been a routine claim was made complicated because by this time, David had lost his discharge papers. In order to collect his pension, he had to prove he was a Revolutionary War veteran by recounting his entire five years of service history in court. So, 50 years after he was discharged, at the age of 77, David provided detailed testimony regarding his service record (1).

David married Millicent MARKS 19 April 1779 while still in service (12). They had seven children, but only three lived long enough to have children themselves. One of these children, David HAMILTON Jr., fathered Olive HAMILTON. Olive joined DAR and provided extensive genealogical information in her letter of 1903.

When Millicent Marks Hamilton died in 1805, only 3 of her 7 children were still alive. They were then age 8 to 16.

Rachel CHURCH or CHURCHILL may have been living in Tioga Co when David met her. They were married by 1807.

In 1833, David went to court to prove he was a veteran of the revolutionary War and collect his pension. Children were: Sabrina HAMILTON , Maria HAMILTON, Harriet HAMILTON , Sarah HAMILTON.

bullet David HAMILTON was born on 28 Mar 1789.(4189) (357) (4213) Maybe born in Albany Co. Buried in Union Cemetery near Sgt. David HAMILTON is another David HAMILTON who may or may not be this son. His headstone reads "died April 15, 1845 ae 51 yrs" making him born 1793. This David had a wife Sarah who died 2 Feb 1832 ae 18y 1mo 8d" (born 4 Jan 1814) (111). This disagrees with both the family bible (012) and Olive Hamilton's letter (002) that cite his vitals as born 1794 and died 3 Nov 1805.

He in 1822 in Cato, Cayuga, NY.(4214) He died on 15 Mar 1845 in Ira, Cayuga, NY.(357) (1532) 002 says he died 20 Apr 1845. Parents: Sergeant David HAMILTON and Milicent MARKS.

He married to Sarah R BURGE on 8 Jan 1811.(357) Children were: Olive HAMILTON.

bullet David HAMILTON was born on 31 Mar 1697 in North Kingston, Washington, RI. (4215)(4216) (4217) (4185) The Compendium (522) says he lived 1697 to 1680.
The Connector (524) says he lived Apr 1697 to May 1780.
Tyler (565) says he lived 31 Mar 1697 to 1779
DAR (618) says he lived 31 Mar 1697 to 1779 He moved before 9 Feb 1730 to Lebanon, New London, CT.(4218) (4219) The History of Sharon puts David in Lebanon by 1747. I think he was there by 1730, when he was witness the will of Michael Taintor who lived in Colchester, which would have been only 5 or 10 miles away. He moved on 20 Jul 1748 to Sharon, Litchfield, CT.(4220) (4221) (4185) According to the History of Sharon by Charles Sedgwick, the northwest corner of Connecticut was the last area of the state to be settled. The first white inhabitant of Sharon settled there in 1731. Town boundaries were laid out in 1732. In October 1738, the township was divided into 53 shares and its land sold at a public auction in New Haven. The original purchases formed a corporation. About half of them became in habitants of the town, and maybe half sold their shares to 22 men who in turn became among the first settlers of Sharon. These 22 men include at least 3 ancestors: David HAMILTON, Bazaleel TYLER, Ebenezer FRISBIE, and possible Jonathan DUNHAM. The standard home lot was fixed at 80 acres. Like David HAMILTON, Sedgwick states, "A large proportion of the first in habitant of Sharon were from Lebanon and Colchester in the County of Windham." Some settled in the hills, buy most located along the main street leading to Salisbury. Most of Sharon's first 80 inhabitants settled there between 1739 and about 1745, so David was among those who came shortly afterwards. Tyler (565) notes that David's sons Dudley and John came a few months earlier in April 1748. My other ancestors, Ebenezer FRISBIE and Bazaleel TYLER, moved there in 1739 and 1742, respectively.

David was the first settler on a place later owned by Judge Sterling in 1842. The property was opposite that of John Cotton Smith, who, after a score of years in politics, became Congressman and then Governor of Connecticut (1812 to 1817). David HAMILTON was probably friends with Governor Smith. Once they were discussing Reverend Whitfield. He preached in Sharon but also in Great Barrington and Salisbury. David once told Governor Smith a story about how he was en route to the Salisbury meeting house to hear Reverend Whitfield preach. Reverend Whitfield had drawn such a crowd that they swelled beyond the capacity of the Salisbury meeting house and the minister preached in the open air. David remarked that he could clearly the words of the Reverend even when he was still half a mile a way. Governor Smith died 7 Dec 1845 and is buried at Hillside Cemetery in Sharon. He died in May 1780 or May 1781 in Sharon, Litchfield, CT. (4222)(4223) (4224)(4225) (4185) David disposed of most of his property before he died (235).
The Compendium (522) says he lived 1697 to 1780.
The History of Sharon (235) says 1781.
The Connector (524) says he lived Apr 1697 to May 1780.
Tyler (565) says he lived 31 Mar 1697 to 1779
DAR (618) says he lived 31 Mar 1697 to 1779
He signed a will on 26 May 1780 in Sharon, Litchfield, CT. (4226)(4227) In his will, he mentions his wife Sarah, and his children Mary, Anne MANNING, Lucy RAY, Dudley, John, and Joseph (174). The will was witness by the Reverend Cotton Mather Smith. Smith was ordained in Sharon in 1755 and continued to preach for 50 years until he died in 1806. He was a Land speculator of VT and NY real estate. in Sharon, Litchfield, CT.(4228) (4226) Accoring to the History of Sharon (235), David was a "great land speculator of his day, his name appearing on the records as the grantor or grantee in deeds, more frequently than any other. He was largely interested in land in Vermont, and what was called the Susquehanna Purchase." He willed his Susquehanna land to the heirs of his daughters Anne and Lucy, and his Panton, VT to the heir of his daughter Mary (174). The Susquehanna Purchase was an area in northeastern Pennsylvania, mostly Wyoming and Lackawanna counties near Scranton along the Susquehanna River. The land purchases were made by a group of investors consisting mainly of settlers from VT and CT. There developed a long-standing controversy over land titles in the area between settlers from Connecticut encouraged by Susquehanna Company of Hartford and settlers who held land under Pennsylvania titles. He was Sharon Deputy Sheriff.(4218) Parents: William HAMILTON and Mercy or Lucy BERRY.

He married to Anna WRIGHT on 3 Sep 1727 in North Kingston, Washington, RI. (4229)(4230) (4185) The Compendium (522) says he married 1727. In 1752, the remaining Indians in Sharon, now only two, conveyed "to their full satisfaction" their last claim of title of lands to Thomas Barnes. The deed was witness by John HAMILTON and John Williams (235).

David Hamilton attended a town meeting on 8 Apr 1753 in which it was proposed to divide the town and form a new religious society in its eastern half. The meeting was adjourned for one hour while John and two others went off to set a line. Perhaps John lived on the eastern half of town. The new church would not be built however for many years due to various disagreements among townspeople. In 1754, Ebenezer FRISBIE (another ancestor) was part of a committee to secure a Minster to replace Rev. Searl whose health was failing. Searl ended his pastoral duties in June 1754 and David HAMILTON was among those chosen at a town meeting to speak to him about abating his salary. Searl left Sharon due to his health.

The population of Sharon was 1196 in 1756 and about 2000 in 1842 (235). It was 950 in 1990. Children were: Mary HAMILTON, Dudley HAMILTON, Private John HAMILTON, Anna HAMILTON, David HAMILTON, Dr. Joseph HAMILTON, Charles HAMILTON, Huldah HAMILTON, Lucy HAMILTON, Prudence HAMILTON, (twin) HAMILTON, (twin) HAMILTON.

He married to Sarah WEST on 10 Jun 1747 in Lebanon, New London, CT.(4226) (4231) (4185) David Hamilton's will refers to his wife Sarah. I assume that he remarried after his first wife died. The IGI calls her Sarah WEST. Children were: HAMILTON.

bullet Olive HAMILTON was born on 4 Oct 1820 in Ira, Cayuga, NY. (357) She died after 1903.(357) Olive was the granddaughter of Sergeant David HAMILTON. She was born on 4 October 1820. In 1903, when she was 83, she wrote a long and detailed letter about her genealogy, presumably to my grandfather, Frank BLOOD. She said little about herself but provided a great number of dates of births, marriages and deaths for dozens of people in her family. One of them was her grandfather, David HAMILTON, a Sergeant in the Revolutionary War. Olive said she "always had a welcome for him." She was 19 years old when he died in 1840. She married on 6 October 1841. Her husband "died 17 years ago and my three children died before he did." He father, David HAMILTON Jr., died in 1845 when she was 24. Her mother having been dead 8 years." She said her father's records were burned with his house.
"Only three grandpa's first children lived to marry. David Luther and Pamela, she was the last one that died 24 years ago. She died with me in my home. I have always lived in Ira, Cayuga or Oswego Counties. My daughter's husband has lived with us since married she left 5 children and we all lived together. Now they are married and have children. I am just ready to step over on the other shore, only waiting the Master's bidding." (2).

bullet Pamela HAMILTON was born on 5 Apr 1797.(4189) (4272) The letter from Olive Hamilton calls the female born on this day Pamela. So does TAG, written by a descendant of Pamela. My Hamilton bible, however, records her as being born Milesent (the first daughter named Milesent had died only 6 months old). Maybe she was born in Albany Co. She died on 3 Dec 1878 in Ira, Cayuga, NY. (357)(4273) She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Pontiac, Oakland, MI.(4274) Parents: Sergeant David HAMILTON and Milicent MARKS.

bullet Patrick HAMILTON was born on 29 Oct 1751.(4189) (357) He appeared on the census in 1790 in Canaan, Columbia, NY.(4275) He died on 8 Jul 1812 in Athens, Greene, NY. Parents: Samuel HAMILTON and Mary HAMILTON.

bullet Sabrina HAMILTON was born about 1807.(4278) I have conflicting birth data. She was born 3 Sep 1807 in Burlington, VT according to both the Hamilton bible (12) and her death certificate (46), but the person providing this information was not listed. She was born in Cayuga County in 1815 according to the 1855 New York State census (45). She was born about 1812 according to the 1860 Federal census. Finally, in the 1920 census, her son Charles cites her place of birth as VT (129). This could be wrong and he may have been the person providing the birth info for her DC. Despite two sources indicating that she was born in VT, a birth certificate could not be found in VT. I think a more likely birthplace is Cayuga County, where her parents were probably living at the time. She died on 7 Dec 1888 in Kenosha, Kenosha, WI. (4279) She died of Cholera complicated by inflammation of the kidneys (046). Parents: Sergeant David HAMILTON and Rachel CHURCHILL.

She married to Walter Hastings BLOOD in 1838 or 1840 in Oswego, Oswego, NY.(776) Children were: Private Charles Hastings BLOOD .

bullet Samuel HAMILTON was born on 23 Nov 1764.(357) Parents: Samuel HAMILTON and Mary HAMILTON.

bullet Sarah HAMILTON was born about 1836.(1532) Her Union Cemetery headstone indicates that she was a daughter of David and Rachel, and that she was 26 when she died in 1862 making her born in 1836. This would seem impossible. This is four years AFTER Rachel died in 1832. Moreover, David would have been 80 and Rachel 67 when she was born. Also, Sarah is the only child of David Hamilton not recorded in his family bible. She died on 29 Sep 1862.(1532) Parents: Sergeant David HAMILTON and Rachel CHURCHILL.
