bullet Reverand Geoffrey JOHNSON was born in 1525 in Leicester, England. (5446) Johnson (647) says "possibly" Leicester, England" He died in Sep 1585.(5447) He was buried on 25 Sep 1585 in Wigston Hospital Chapel, Leicester, England. (5448) He was educated St. John's College in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.(5449) He was an Anglican Priest. (5450) In 1534, King Henry VIII broke FROM the Catholic Church and established the (Anglican) Church of England. The following detials come from Palmer RR, Colton J. A History of the Modern World. 4th ed. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1971, pp. 78-82, 85-87, and 174-187;and Encyclopaedia Britannica. Macropedia. 15th ed., s.v. "Mary I."

THE REFORMATION: In 1517 Martin Luther, a German Catholic priest at the University of Wittenberg, appealed to the Pope to correct abuses in the Roman Catholic Church, about which there was already widespread concern within the church and among the laity. When reforms were not forthcoming, and Luther was excommunicated by the Pope for insubordination, religious dissension and wars erupted in Europe, and continued intermittently for the next 200 years. When, ultimately, a religious "balance of power" emerged, the political face of the continent had been changed. Historians now refer to these events, in retrospect, as the Reformation. During this period the Catholic Church was reformed and reorganized, and numerous "protestant" sects were separately established. These included Lutheran, Anglican and Calvinist denominations.

THE REFORMATION IN ENGLAND: The English Reformation began in 1534 when King Henry VIII (1509-1547) despaired of obtaining a male heir to succeed him on the throne from his existing wife, Catherine of Aragon. Therefore, he requested Pope Clement VII to annul his marriage to Catherine. Since Catherine objected and was, furthermore, the aunt of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, the Pope hesitated. Impatient with the delay, Henry acted by repudiating Papal authority and setting up the Anglican Church as the State Church of England with the King as "Protector and Only Supreme Head of the Church and Clergy of England". At the time, Henry did not intend to create a Protestant church along the lines evolving on the continent under the influence of the moderate German, Martin Luther, or more radical reformers such as the Frenchman, John Calvin. He only wanted to be the supreme head of an English Catholic Church. Parents: Maurice JOHNSON and Jane LACYE.

bullet Isaac JOHNSON was christened on 2 Apr 1676 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA. (5482)(5483) Parents: Nathaniel JOHNSON and Mary SMITH.

bullet Captain John JOHNSON was born about 1589 in England. (5484)(5485) (5486)(5487) Johnson (647) says it was about 1599. According to Johnson (622), the home of John Johnson is not known but his relatives resided 12 miles from London on the River Lee and it is likely that he came from the same locality. He resided before 1630 in Wilmington, Kent, England.(5488) He emigrated on 12 Jun 1630 to Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5489)(5490) (5491)(5492) (5493) Savage, Holman and Johnson (622) believe that he probably came with the Winthrop fleet. Johnson (647) elaborates, claiming John Johnson left Isle of Wright (Southampton) 8 Apr 1630 aboard the Arbella, one of the four ships in the advance group of the 11 ship Winthrop fleet (which together brought 1000 immigrants). The Arbella (originally called the Eagle) was renamed for Lady Arbella Johnson. She had married Isaac Johnson, a cousin of John Johnson. The voyage was "rough and trying." The fleet first landed on a low and swampy area at Naumkeag (Salem Harbor) on 12 Jun 1630 but Governor Winthrop moved onto Shawmut (Boston) on 17 Sep 1630. Johnson was a Puritan but also emigrated for commercial reasons.

He moved before 28 Sep 1630 to Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5494)(5495) He appeared in court on 28 Sep 1630 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5496) On the Coroner's jury. He became a member Roxbury church about Oct 1630 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5497)(5498) The year is my own estimate. I assumed that he was a church member prior to his freemanship. He was appointed Town Constable on 19 Oct 1630 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(5499) (5500)(5501) He took the oath of a freeman on 18 May 1631 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA. (5502)(5503) (5504)(5505) He had applied for admission 19 Oct 1630. He was Served on several committees between 1632 and 1657 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5506)(5507) 07 Nov 1632: Committee to view ground and set bounds for Charlestown and Newton
06 Aug 1633: Committee to put a bridge over the Muddy River (5 towns contributed money)

Unknown: authorized and supervised the minting of the "pine tree shilling." He was Served as Representative for Roxbury in first assembly of House of Deputies (General Court) between 1634 and 1657.(5508) (5509) (5510)(5511) Served 30 sessions over 20 years (1634-1638, 1641-1642, 1645-1653, 1656-1659). He Arms of the adherents of Anne Hutchinson, Puritan dissenter, were confiscated and taken to Johnson. in 1637.(5512) Hutchinson was tried and sentenced to banishment, whereupon she migrated to Rhode Island. He served as a Captain of Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company between 1638 and 1640 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5513)(5514) (5515)(5516) The first date was when he was admitted to Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. Membership in this society was restricted to distinguished citizens. According to Anderson's The Great Migration begins, "John Johnson was freed from training, paying l0s. a year to the company, 31 October 1639, and the following year was freed entirely, in "regard of other public service without any pay to the company." This implied that he was not yet sixty years old in 1640." He was a clerk for the company for three year then became Surveyor General of all arms and ammunition of the colony. He continued in that capacity for at least 12 years. He was a Clerk and Captain of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company between 1638 and 1640 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5517) He Slave or indentured servant owner Took in an indentured servant named Samuel Hefford for three years between 1640 and 1643 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(5518) He was a Surveyor General of Arms and Ammunition for entire colony (quartermaster) between 1641 and 1657 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5519)(5520) (5521)(5522) (5523) Between 1631 sand 1642, arming and maintaining ammunition for the colonial military was largely administrated by committees. In 1642, the office of Surveyor General of Arms was created and John John was appointed to fill the position, which he would hold for 20 years. The office involved the custodial care and distribution of gunpowder to various towns in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He delivered the powder and received back any excess supplies. He also recovered arms from individuals by order of the court to either preserve them or sell at a fair price. This task required Johnson to take "into serious consideration the present danger of each plantation by the desperate plots and conspiracies of the heathen." He generally supplied to each solider one "musket, sword, rest and pair of bandilers with two fathom of match." In 1643, arms and stores were brought from Castle Island to his custody. He was still acting in this capacity in 1652 and may have acted as quartermaster for some time after. He purchased land from John Petitt and William Dennisson on 8 Jan 1644 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5524) He was a tavern keeper after 1 Feb 1645 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA.(5525) (5526)(5527) He Johnson's house (the tavern) burned down as well as much of the coloney's power. in Mar 1645 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(5528) According to Anderson's The Great Migration Begins, "A great tragedy to the Johnson family as well as the town of Roxbury, occurred when John Johnson's house, with a substantial supply of the colony's gunpowder therein, caught fire and burned in March of 1645." Anderson includes two quotes from diarists of the time who recorded the event:

"John Johnson, the surveyor general of ammunition, a very, industrious and faithful man in his place, having built a fair house in the midst of the town, with diverse barns and other outhouses, it fell on fire in the daytime, no man knowing by what occasion, and there being in it seventeen barrels of the country's powder, and many arms, all was suddenly burnt and blown up, to the value of four or five hundred £, wherein a special providence of God appeared, for he, being from home, the people came together to help and many were in the house, no man thinking of the powder till one of the company put them in mind of it, whereupon they all withdrew, and soon after the powder took fire and blew up all about it, and shook the houses in Boston and Cambridge, so as men thought it had been an earthquake."

"In this fire were strange preservations of God's providence to the neighbors & town, for the wind at first stood to carry the fire to other houses, but suddenly turned & carried it from all other houses, only carrying it to the barns and outhousing thereby, & it was a fierce wind, & thereby drove the vehement heat from the neighbor houses."

Holman (616) says it was his tavern where the 17 barrels of gunpower was stored which burned. The fire also destroyed some very early Roxbury records as Johnson was also Roxbury Town Clerk. He granted 40 pounds "for service done the country diverse years past on 14 May 1645.(5529) He petitioned to be granted 436 acres from Dedham, Watertown, and Sudbury on 7 Oct 1646.(5530) He was Paymaster for the building of Boston prison on 17 Oct 1649. (5531) He 100 acres to Richard Parker on 24 May 1650 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(5532) He appeared in court on 14 Oct 1651.(5533) The court dcides to pay John Jpohnson 5£ pery year in recognition of the good work he had done as He He was bequeathed 5 pounds by Thomas Dudley, the Assistant Governor on 26 Apr 1652 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5534) The Assistant Governor, Thomas Dudley, was a friend of John Johnson. In his will, Dudley bequeathed to "John Johnson, surveyor general of the Arms and one of his beloved friends" 5 £ if he survived Dudley by two years and asked Johnson to "do for n me and mine as I would have done for them & theirs in the like case." He received land from Thomas Hawley on 22 Jun 1652 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5535) He He was among those granted permission to "set down" a grist mill in 1655. (5536) He Due to his long service, he was granted 600 acres "any place he can find it" on 6 May 1657.(5537) (5538) (5539) He sold it within the year. Most say it was 600 acres but Johnson (647) says 300 twice and cites the passage from town records, "That Mr.. Johnson, having bin long serviceable in place of Surveyor Gen'll, for which never had any satisfaction, which this court considering of, thinks meet grant him 300 acors in any place he can find according to law." He signed a will on 30 Sep 1659 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA.(5540) (5541) Curiously, Johnson (647) includes transcript of the actually will, which says it was "this 30th of the 7th, '59." He died on 30 Sep 1659 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA. (5542)(5543) (5544) Johnson (647) says it was a day later (the day before his will was probated). He left, according to his inventory, £623 including 350 in real estate (meadowm, house and lot, other lots, pasture). on 15 Oct 1659 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5545)(5546) In the earliest list of Roxbury residents (1642), his probably was valued among the highest in the town at 15 £ with six goats and four kids. In the early 1650s land inventory, he held 13 parcels (six grated to him buy the town) including his house, barm, orchard, marsh, mowing round, woodland, and meadow, totally over 250 acres. His clothing alone was valued at 20£. He also owned carpet, silver spoons, books, and hour glass and curtains. He was educated His inventory included 11 books and imports from England, but he made his made on his will..(5547) (5548) He .(5549) According to Anderson's Great Migration begins, "John Johnson was the confidant of powerful men, filled an important position in the affairs of the early colony and in the development of its defenses, and was involved as an overseer, attorney, witness and appraiser in the affairs of many of his neighbors. He owned a considerable estate at his death. With all these advantages, he kept a low profile in his personal life and never achieved a consistent rank of Mr." He was Puritan. (5550) In addition to the committees listed here, the Great Migration Begins notes that he served on numerous other committees as well. Parents: John JOHNSON Sr..

He married to Margery HEATH on 21 Sep 1613 in Ware, Herfordshire, England. (5554)(5555) Johnson (647) claims that Capt.. John JOHNSON's second wife was Margery SCUDDER, daughter of William and Margery SCUDDER of Darenth, Kent, England. However, this is based solely upon an entry in the 27 Jul 1607 will of William SCUDDER, naming John JOHNSON, Sr., John JOHNSON, Jr. and daughter Margaret. No marriage record is known. Moreover, John JOHNSON lived in 12 miles north of London, whereas Darenth, Kent is a few miles southeast of the city. In fact, he lists only 5 children, however, he provides no birth or baptism info for Captain Johnson, his wives, nor any of his children. Furthermore, the fact that he claims Captain Johnson's first wife Margery was buried 3 months after she died and second wife Grace died the day before she signed her will casts doubt on his credibility.
