bullet Abraham KEMPLER

He married to Sarah GIETEL. (3889) According to Grandma Sally, Hyman had three sisters who emmigrated to NYC and died there when grandma was a child in Brooklyn.

I have written down several stories grandma Sally has told about her parents. Although her real name was Scheidel, everyone just called her "Jennie." Grandma said she knew a few Jews named Scheidel that went by Jennie. Grandma said her mother had "presence' such that she Walked like a queen " yet was very humble.

She never worked, but was an excellent cook. Besides, says grandma, "taking care of four children is work enough." She also participated in lots of charitable activities. When neighborhood people were threatened with eviction, she would take up collections.

As a painter, Herman often had business dealings with a particular hardware store run by a father and son team. Grandma remembers on numerous occasions her father would call the store and say, "Hello. Is this you or your father speaking?"

Grandma said Hyman was very artistic. Grandma, a professional cellist herself, says Hyman played the violin very well even though he could not read music. Sally said Hyman could hear something by Jascha Heifetz just once and play it well. He could paint any object so that it looked like wood, grains and all, and could make it look like walnut or cherry or whatever they wanted. Apparently his house painting could be rather artistic as well. He was once hired to paint a ceiling and spontaneously painted a flying bluebird in the comer, then another and another until he had covered the whole ceiling with flying bluebirds. When the lady who hired him saw what he had done, she screamed, so he promised to paint the ceiling over but she liked it and would not let him. She showed off her ceiling to the neighborhood. The woman had been very lonely. Her ceiling became a neighborhood attraction. Herman's phone did not stop ringing that night because all of the people who visited the lady's house to view the ceiling then wanted their ceiling painted, but Hyman would not do it again. Grandma says her father did more than simply paint a ceiling. He brought a lonely woman friends and changed her whole life.

Hyman's had a fondness for animals and would bring many home, especially birds. He liked to sketch flying bluebirds while talking on the phone. Hyman owned a minorbird and also bred and sold canaries (he owned over 30 of them). Grandma once said he was sent out to buy an overcoat and came home with a parrot. My mother remembers that the bird liked to sleep with a blanket over its cage to make it dark. If you forgot to put his blanket on, he would whisper, "Goodnight, goodnight ..." until you did. Hyman loved to play practical jokes and Clap ladies' asses." Grandma said Jennie told her that Hyman had threatened to kill himself unless Jennie married him.

Grandma says her father was a very uneducated man but very artistic. He did not know who Michelangelo was, but loved birds and painted beautiful ceilings. He remarried two years after Jennie died, but was "alone soon after." Grandma was not specific as to what happened.

Grandma said Hyman remarried two years after Jennie died, but he was soon living alone again.

bullet Hyman KEMPLER was born on 27 Mar 1879 in Podegrodzie, Bachma, Galizia, Austria. (5682) Today, Podegrodzie is in Nowy Sacz Province in Poland. He emigrated in 1896 to New York, New York, NY. (5681)(5683) Family lore is that Hyman was from Krakow. If he lived there at all, it was not for long because he was still only 17 when he immigrated to America. Hyman found his way from Poland to Southampton, England, where he left for America aboard the steamship Saint Paul for a week long voyage across the Atlantic. Nearly 9 years later, Hyman claimed that he left on 14 October 1896. Records at the National Archives confirm the existence of a steamship Saint Paul, however, the Saint Paul did not depart that week. Hyman probably remembered the date incorrectly. The year 1896 is confirmed by the 1915 New York State Census. He resided 434 East 76th street in 1904 in New York, New York, NY.(5684) The KEMPLER family always lived on the Lower East Side of New York City, but moved within that neighborhood frequently. it would appear that the family purchased their first telephone in 1904. He resided 408 East 74th street in 1905 in New York, New York, NY.(5685) He resided 28 East 80th Street in 1910 in New York, New York, NY. (5686) Hyman was working at 355 East 77th street. He resided 444 East 85th street in 1915 in New York, New York, NY. (5687) He was naturalized on 25 Feb 1915 in New York, New York, NY. (5688) He resided 73 Willet Street in 1920 in New York, New York, NY.(5689) He resided 585 East 84th Street after 1920 in New York, New York, NY. (2228) Grandma was positive that after 1920, the KEMPLERs lived at that address. He was described as having brown hair and brown eyes, weighing 163 pounds, standing 5'8" in 1924.(5682) Grandma said that he also had light skin. He resided 1144 Stratford Avenue before 1946 in Bronx, Bronx, NY.(5690) He died on 9 Feb 1959 in New York, New York, NY. (5691) According to his death certificate, Hyman died in 9 Feb 1959 at the Home of Son's and Daughters of Israel in Manhattan, which Grandma called a described as a nursing home on the Lower East Side. ." The informant for the death certificate was Uncle Joe, Hyman's son, Joseph KEMPLER. Uncle Joe's information was not entirely correct. Hyman could not have lived at his 1144 Stratford Avenue Bronx address for 50 years. He was not 78 but a week short of 80. He was born in Austria, not Poland. He knew his mother and father. He was buried on 10 Feb 1959 in Mt Lebanon Cemetery, Cyprus Hills, Long Island. (5691) He was described as was tall and nice looking with brown hair, brown eyes and light skin. (2228) He was a painter.(2228) (5683) (5691) Grandma Sally says that it was about 1915 when her father Hyman began to call himself Herman (an also the more German "Hermann") to sound more American. Grandma said her father spoke Polish, German, Yiddish, a little Hungarian and some rather "atrocious" English (004). Parents: Abraham KEMPLER and Sarah GIETEL .

He married to Scheidel SCHLACHET on 5 Jul 1902 in New York, New York, NY.(5683) (2228) The date is an estimate. Grandma Sally says Hyman met Scheidel in NYC, and did not know her in Austria. She says that they married on July 5 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan a year after Jennie came over. The 1915 New York State Census reports Jennie had been in the US for 14 years. This would likely make the year of her emigration 1901 and, if Sally was right, they were married 5 July 1902. Children were: Anna KEMPLER, Sadie Gertrude (Sally) KEMPLER, Joseph KEMPLER, Eve KEMPLER.

bullet Jill KEMPLER Parents: Joseph KEMPLER and Florence KNITTLE.

She married to Abraham (abbe) DAMESEK on 3 Apr 1932 in New York, New York, NY.(2228) In 1931, Sally would play cello in Yorkville to 3am and take the subway home. One night, while waiting for a train on the 125th street elevated subway platform for the train to the Bronx, a man walked up to her and said, "I think we have a friend in common, Sam Schwartz." When the guy mentioned Sam, grandma knew he was on the level. Grandma let the man take her home. For the next 6 months, most of the courtship occurred between 3 and 6am. Grandma and the man would drink a little of the milk which came in the morning, leading her mother Jennie to suspect that a poor person was doing it. The man's named was Abbe and later would be my grandfather. One mourning they were necking and Abbe said, "Let's get married or something." So grandma replied, "Let's get married or nothing!" There was later a more formal proposal. Sally was married in NYC in an orthodox synagogue (at her father's insistence). The reception was held at a restaurant owned by a man named Greenspan. One of the guests that attended her wedding was Arthur Tracey, a vaudeville entertainer known as The Street Singer. Abbe was his arranger and accompanist. Tracey sang popular songs in several languages. Sally became proficient in Yiddish by listening to Abbe's parents, since her own parents spoke mostly in English. As a child growing up in the 1970s, I remember that when the family got together, it was usually at grandma Sally's house. She was a good cook. They lived only a mile from my parent's house and I used to visit fairly often, sometimes when I did not like what mom was having for dinner. I never really thought of grandpa and Grandma DAMESEK as old then because they were only in their 70s, whereas my Dad's parents were in their 90s and 100s. Even grandma Sally called grandpa Frank "The old man." We all got together at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It always took my father two trips to drive mom and me and his parents next door to Sally and Abbe's house because Dad had a pickup. Once on Thanksgiving it snowed two feet and it took dad nearly an hour to finish playing taxi driver. Children were: Esta DAMESEK.
