bullet Silence KINSLEY was born on 30 Aug 1727 in Easton, Bristol, MA. (5784)(5785) She died between 1766 and 1780.(4700) (4699) The 1846 & 1885 Herrick genealogies claim the Colonel's first wife, Silence KINGSLEY, died in CT before 1762 and that Samuel's youngest children were born by an unknown second wife. This seems to be based upon an absence of a death record for Silence in the Norwich records. My research suggests that Silence died before 1780 (when it is known that Samuel had remarried) and is likely to be the mother of ALL of the Colonel's children. Samuel HERRICK did remarry. The name of his other wife was Lydia TUBBS. Lydia was half Samuel's age and far too young to be the mother of any of his children. Unless there is an unknown third wife (a seemingly unlikely possibility), Silence must have lived long enough to bear all of the children. Although the Herrick genealogies indicate without evidence that Silence died in Norwich, Silence may have moved to Bennington and may be buried in Kingsley Cemetery (four miles west of center Bennington). Parents: Samuel KINSLEY III and Mary PACKARD.

She married to Colonel Samuel HERRICK on 26 Feb 1754 in Norwich, New London, CT. (5786)(5787) (5788)(5789) Children were: Ruth HERRICK, Frederick HERRICK , Cyprian HERRICK, Sarah HERRICK , Daniel HERRICK, Francis HERRICK , David HERRICK.

He resided McKee Street in 1917 in Manchester, Hartford, CT. (5792) He died on 8 May 1917 in Manchester, Hartford, CT. (195)(5792) He contracted pneumonia and died a week later. He was survived by four daughters and two sons. He was a Farmer.(195) He was buried in East Cemetery, (South) Manchester, Hartford, CT. (195) Parents: Carl KROLL.

bullet Louisa Sophia (Lizzie) KROLL was born on 23 Dec 1868 in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. (5793)(5791) (5794) She was born Dec 1869 in Germany according to the 1900 census (126). She is called "Lizzie" in the 1900 census. She was baptised on 14 Jan 1869 in Germany. (5793) I assume that this date is for a baptism. She was confirmed in Mar 1883 in Germany.(5793) The date is firm. The event is in question. She emigrated on 25 Jan 1890 to New York, New York, NY.(5795) According to Germans to America, she left aboard the ship Friesland which left Antwerp and arrived at New York. Family lore confirms that she went alone. Her father seems to have come over separately. She lived in Manchester, Hartford, CT for 55 years according to her obituary (273). That would mean that she came over in 1885 not 1890 as cited above. I think this is incorrect. She was naturalized in 1897. (5796) She was a Conducted "general work" at the silk mill in 1920 in Manchester, Hartford, CT.(5796) She died on 25 Jul 1940 in Manchester, Hartford, CT. (5797)(5798) She died after a long illness. At the time of her death, she was living at 69 West Street. She was buried on 28 Jul 1940 in East Cemetery, Manchester, Hartford, CT. (5794) Parents: Carl KROLL and Maria.

She married to Johann Ludwig Heinrich (John F.) LANGE on 14 Oct 1893 in Manchester, Hartford, CT.(5799) (5800) Someone wrote on this article "1938." This date makes no sense. If it was 1938, a 47 year anniversary would make them married in 1891, which was a year before John Lange emigrated to America. The 1900 census (126) says they were married 7 years making the years 1893 (when they were in America) and their 47th anniversary 1940. The 1920 census states that John and Louisa were born in Hamburg, Germany. This conflicts with documentation indicating that the family moved to Russia for a few years where John was born in St. Petersburg. Perhaps John was "raised" in Hamburg. According to his granddaughter, Judy LANGE MULLOWNEY, when John arrived at Ellis Island, his name was recorded as "John F. LANGE" despite having no middle name beginning with F.

Johann served in the Prussian Army. This would have had to have been after he was old enough (17 in 1886) but before he emigrated (1892). The German Empire was at peace at this time. Children were: LANGE , Lillian LANGE, Henry LANGE , Alfred LANGE, Johann Frederich Wilhelm (John William) LANGE, LANGE.

bullet Fredericke? LANGE was born about 1871 in Germany.(5804) Parents: Heinrich Ludwig Christian Johann LANGE and Maria Sophie Christiana JACOBS.

bullet Heinrich Ludwig Christian Johann LANGE was born on 27 Sep 1831 in Güstrow (Suckow), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.(554) He was born in Nov 1831 according to the 1900 Census (126).

Güstrow is about 100 miles northwest of Berlin in the State of Mechlenburg-Vorpommern, one of the northernmost of Germany's 16 States. He emigrated before 22 Oct 1861 to Pleskau (Pskov). Russia.(5423) He was a Farmer before 1892 in Glasewitz, Wurtemberg, Germany. (5805) The 1900 census also states that Henry was a farmer, but he was 68 years old at the time that was probably his occupation in Germany (125). He emigrated before 1892 to Glasewitz, Wurtemberg, Germany. (5806)(5807) His son Johann was born in Russia in 1869. Germans to America records his residence in 1892 as Glasewitz, Germany. He boarded the ship Sorrento with his children and left Hamburg, Germany for New York. He reported that his destination was Connecticut (161). He emigrated on 30 Nov 1892 to New York, New York, NY. (5808) Boarded the ship Sorrento with his children and left Hamburg, Germany for New York. He reported that his destination was Connecticut (161). He resided 187 (Street name not provided) in 1900 in Manchester, Hartford, CT.(2224) He was 68 and living with his 19 year old daughter Annie in the home of John CUSTER (his son-in-law through ______) and his family. John's family were more established in America, having emigrated six years earlier in 1886. It would seem that Henry's other children had left home. The census states that his dwelling number was 187, but it did not give the street (125). He died on 2 Jul 1913 in Hartford, Hartford, CT. He was buried in Talcootville, Vernon, Hartford, CT. (5809) I assume that the date on the invoice, 18 Feb 1913, was when funereal services were purchased and that this occurred months prior to his death. Parents: Johann Joachim LANGE Captain and Maria Sophia Elizabeth WALTER.

He married to Maria Sophie Christiana JACOBS on 22 Oct 1861 in Pleskau (Pskov). Russia. (5423) They were married in St. Jacobi Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pskov, Russia. Children were: Lina Friderika Lisette LANGE, Karl Friedrich Johann LANGE , Johann Ludwig Heinrich (John F.) LANGE, Fredericke? LANGE, Jette LANGE, Wilhelmine LANGE.

He married to UNKNOWN before 1858. Henry had a daughter born 1859. He married Maria in 1861. He must have had a previous marriage. I assumed it took place prior to 1858 when his daughter was born. I do not know why Heinrich and Maria were living in Russia prior to immigrating to America. Pskov would have been accessible to people from northern Germany by sea. It should be noted that Pskov is NOT in the Ukraine. During the mid-1700s, hundreds of thousands of Germans immigrated to the Ukraine region of Russia to farm at the invitation of Catherine the Great (the Russian ruler who herself was German). They prospered there for about 150 years in communities which retained their German culture architecture, religion, but in the mid and latter 1800s, most decided it was wise to leave Russia. Many of these ethnic Germans from Russia settled in America's Midwest states like North Dakota (e.g. Lawrence Welk). Pskov, however, is NOT in the Ukraine. All of this I learned during my wild goose chase when I mistakenly believed that the LANGE family was part of this mass immigration to the Ukraine.

Heinrich and his wife Maria JACOBS had 5 children that I know of. Henry and his family immigrated a few years after the CUSTERs. Henry came with no wife and his three youngest children: Johann, Jette, and Wilhelmine (called "Annie" in the 1900 census).

In 1900, 68 year old Henry LANGE was living with his 19 year old daughter "Annie" (I suspect that this is Wilhelmine since the age fits and that her name has been Anglicized like her father's). Both Henry and Annie are living in the home of John CUSTER, his wife Louisa and their 5 kids. John is 45 and was born in Germany as was his wife and 3 oldest children. John CUSTER and family had come to America 6 years earlier in 1886. He was a "woolen finisher."

I did not know what happened to Maria. Manchester vital records could not find a death record for a Maria or Mary LANGE. I do not know what happened to Henry's oldest children (Lina born 1863 and Karl born 1866, both in Russia) either. Maybe they remained in Germany, remained in Russia, or died.

I suspect that Henry's daughter Louisa left Germany or Russia to live with John CUSTER in America. Then it would seem that Henry's wife died since she does not come to America with him. I suspect that after she died, John wrote Henry overseas and invited his father-in-law to live with him and wife (Henry's other daughter?) in America. I suspect Henry's oldest children remained in the old country because they had started their own families and were rooted. Maybe they had issues with their older half-sister Louisa.

The census has Henry's correct month and year but says that he has been married for 4 years. He was married 39 years ago in 1861. I assume that is simply and error. Either that of there was a THIRD marriage that I do not know about.
Children were: Louisa LANGE.

bullet Henry LANGE was born on 22 Nov 1899 in Manchester, Hartford, CT. (370) He died in Oct 1981 in Manchester, Hartford, CT. (370) Parents: Johann Ludwig Heinrich (John F.) LANGE and Louisa Sophia (Lizzie) KROLL.

(5814) He was a Time keeper at Cheney Brothers between 1924 and 1955 in Manchester, Hartford, CT. (4169)(4170) (5811)(5813) Business located at 146 Hartford Road, Manchester. He was buried on 21 Apr 1988 in Buckland Cemetery, Manchester, Hartford, CT. (5815) He was buried in VT. John was unearthed and relocated to Maraboro, VT. He was educated Morse Business College in Hartford, Hartford, CT. (5816) Parents: Johann Ludwig Heinrich (John F.) LANGE and Louisa Sophia (Lizzie) KROLL.

He married to Beatrice Eleanor HALLADAY on 4 Jun 1938 in Manchester, Hartford, CT. (4169)(4170) (4171) John did not finish High School. According to daughter Judith MULLOWNEY, they met when my Beatrice started work at Cheney Brothers where John taught her her job. Beatrice was given a wedding shower by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Alfred LANGE (260). John was a member of the Manchester Lodge of the Masons, sang with the Beethoven Glee Club, and taught Sunday school at Concordia Lutheran Church were he attended (312, 325). Children were: John Burton LANGE, Judith Sharon LANGE.

bullet Johann Joachim LANGE Captain was a Workman / day laborer in Güstrow (Suckow), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.(554) (5423) During this time he was living on a farm.

He married to Maria Sophia Elizabeth WALTER before 27 Sep 1831 in Germany?.(554) Children were: LANGE, Heinrich Ludwig Christian Johann LANGE.

He married to Anne Maria Elizabeth BARCHAUSEN after Nov 1836. (554)

bullet Johann Ludwig Heinrich (John F.) LANGE was born on 17 Mar 1869 in St. Petersburg, Russia.(5807) (5817) Two lesser sources, however, indicate that he was born in Germany are his son's birth certificate (170) and the 1900 census records (126). He was christened on 28 Mar 1869 in Pleskau (Pskov). Russia. (5807) He served as a soldier in the Prussian Army between 1886 and 1892. That he served is according to family lore. The years cited are NOT his terms of service, but the period during which I have been able to narrow his term of service. I doubt he would have served earlier than 1886 when he was 17. By 1892, he had emigrated to America. He was a Farmer before 1892 in Glasewitz, Wurtemberg, Germany.(5805) According to reference 162, Glasewitz is in Wuerttemberg (southern Germany), but a modern German gazetteer puts Glasewitz in County Güstrow in the Land of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which makes more sense as they had lived in Güstrow before. So where is Glasewitz? He resided before 1892 in Glasewitz, Wurtemberg, Germany. (5818) He emigrated on 30 Nov 1892 to New York, New York, NY. (5819)(5799) Boarded the ship Sorrento and left Cuxhaven, Hamburg, Germany for New York with his siblings and father, who reported that his destination was Connecticut (161). Glasewitz is 6 km from Gustrow. He was naturalized on 18 Oct 1894 in Hartford, Hartford, CT.(5820) (5796) This is the date he field his declaration of intention. He was a Silk weaver at Cheney brothers between 1898 and 1938 in Manchester, Hartford, CT.(5821) (5799)(5803) In 1938, he was among 20 employees who received awards for having served the company for over 40 years (320). He resided 18 West Street in 1900 in Manchester, Hartford, CT.(5799) John was renting. He resided 69 West Street before 1952 in Manchester, Hartford, CT. (5817) He died on 16 Apr 1952 in Preston, New London, CT. (5822) What was he doing there? He was buried in East Cemetery, Manchester, Hartford, CT.(5817) Parents: Heinrich Ludwig Christian Johann LANGE and Maria Sophie Christiana JACOBS.

He married to Louisa Sophia (Lizzie) KROLL on 14 Oct 1893 in Manchester, Hartford, CT. (5799)(5823) Someone wrote on this article "1938." This date makes no sense.

He was found in a hotel room registered under the name of John Earl Rivers. Maybe it was a suicide or maybe he was misdiagnosed. He was buried in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery, Brattleboro, Windham, VT.(5825) (5827) (5826) He was a Printer/Engraver.(5824) Parents: Johann Frederich Wilhelm (John William) LANGE and Beatrice Eleanor HALLADAY.

bullet Louisa LANGE was born in Oct 1858 in Germany.(2224) The headstone recorded 1859. I suspect John provided an incorrect birth year when his wife died in 1917 two years before he did. Whether Louisa was born in 1858 or 1859, it is unlikely she was a daughter of Maria since Maria and Henry had not yet married. A 30 year old Henry married a 22-year-old Maria JACOBS 22 Oct 1861 in Pskov, Russia (called Pleskau by the ethnic German residents). So it would seem that Henry had another daughter that I did not know about from a previous marriage that I did not know about either. She died in 1917. (2225) Parents: Heinrich Ludwig Christian Johann LANGE and UNKNOWN .

She married to John CUSTER about 1873. (2224) In the 1900 census, in the column labeled Relationship to Head of Household, John CUSTER is labeled H, Louisa as W, the children as S or D, Henry as FL, and Annie as DL. I assume that FL is father-in-law and DL is daughter-in-law. This makes Louisa a daughter of Henry.

He moved about 1859 to South Newmarket, Rockingham, NH. (5833) The date is a guess. After his birth in 1838, he attended public schools and leaned the shoemaking trade. "He afterwards went to South Newmarket." He was a Foreman at Amos Paul's Machine Company between 1862 and 1895 in South Newmarket, Rockingham, NH.(5834) The dates are approximate. He was a Managed a large farm for the Mechanics National Bank and merrimack County Savings Bank of Concord. after 1895 in Lancaster, Coos, NH.(5835) He was living in 1908 in NH.(5836) Presumably alive when Stearns (672) published in 1908. She married to Private John Moorhead EWIN on 15 Jan 1857 in Plum Island, Gloucester, Essex, MA.(5846) (5847) (5848) John married Margaret 15 Jan 1857 according to a 1916 marriage certificate (151). I believe the event took place on Plum Island, Essex, MA (200), rather than in nearby Newburyport (151). Genealogist James Lithgow Ewin, however, states their marriage as 15 Oct 1856 (200). I am reluctant to accept this information since Ewin's work is organized poorly and errors would not surprise me. Children were: Margaret Ann EWIN, John William EWIN, Hannah Jane EWIN, Edward Stewart EWIN, Catherine (Kate) EWIN, Lydia Fernald EWIN.

bullet William LANGLANDS was born on 28 Dec 1800 in Scotland. (5849)(5850) This is a calculated date based upon his age at death: 48 years, 4 months, 11 days. He was educated Studied law at a university in France before 1834 in France. (5851) He emigrated in 1834 to Massachusetts. (1465)(5852) It was 1835 according to the article. He died on 8 May 1849 in Plum Island, Gloucester, Essex, MA.(1465) (5853)(5854) William died of "lung fever." Stearns (672) says he died 9 Mar 1848 and his wife's obit (158) says he died in 1848, but they are less credible. He was a lawyer and farmer in Newbury, Essex, MA.(5855) (5856) "Performed legal business for the town [of Newburyport] until his death." Parents: William LANGLANDS and Margaret.

He appeared in court on 9 Jul 1644 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5878) Hugh LASKIN and his wife were charged in court with hard usage of their servant. Jacob Barney testified that he had heard that the greater part of the servant's diet was course bread and whey, but LASKIN denied it. Barney and other s further charged that the boy's bed and clothes were lacking and that he was growing thin. The LASKINs were changed 40 shillings.
