His name was accidently entered as Richard LONGLEY. This error has led many genealogists to make a false assumption. bullet Joseph LOOMIS was born before 1590 in England.(6036) (6037) He was a woolen draper between 1628 and 1636 in Braintree, Essex, England. (6038)(6039) Elisa Loomis (510) speculates that Joseph Loomis, as a wholesale cloth merchant, must have traveled to conduct business, not only to London, but to Spain an Portugal, since Braintree cloth was primary sold in those countries. Partly as a result of contact with foreign countries, Braintree developed a somewhat indepent and liberal thinking. Joseph was probably a regular at the Braintree market, held weekly for 700 years. Elisa Loomis speculates that it was at the marketplace that Joseph not only heard people talking about the opportunities in America, but probably met Mary White, whose father no doubt went to Market there - only four miles from Shalford.

Based upon his assessed taxes in 1629, eight shillings (kind of high), it can be assumed that he was doing very well as a merchant. In 1636, Joseph was paid an 9 shilling tax lived on Essex County residents by the King to cover the cost of building a ship for 8,000 £. This caused an "uproar," when was a fought in parliament by some. He emigrated on 17 Jul 1638 to Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(6040) (6041)(6042) Joseph came on the "Susan and Ellen" which left London on 11 Apr 1638 and landed 3 months 3 days later. He moved after 17 Jul 1638 to Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(6043) He moved in 1639 to Windsor, Hartford, CT.(6044) (6045) During the 1630s, word spread of the rich and fertile land in the Valley called Connecticut. In 1633, John Oldham and three others seem to have been the first white people to travel from the Bay to the Connecticut. They traveled through the Connecticut wilderness to trade with the Indians. Oldham spoke their language and was well received. The journey took two weeks. News of the land spread when Oldham returned, driving a migration of people primarily in 1635 and 1636. The attraction of this place, rather than dissatisfaction with living in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Most trips were made by land rather than water. Richard LYMAN is another of my ancestors who made the trip through the woods and in three generation, my LOOMIS and LYMAN family would intermarry. The path they took was from Dorchester, through South Farmington, Sturbridge, Quabaug Old Fort (Brimfield), Springfield, to Windsor. He granted a 21 acre plantation immediately south of where the Farmington meets the Connecticut on 2 Feb 1640 in Windsor, Hartford, CT. (6046)(6047) The area was called "The Island" because of the results from periodic overflows. He died on 25 Nov 1658 in Windsor, Hartford, CT. (6048)(6049) (6050) He left, according to his inventory, over £178 on 2 Dec 1658.(6051) The court records an agreement between the children of Joseph Loomis to share the estate equally. Six years prior to the end of his life, he signed his name "Lomas" apparently indicting a preference for that spelling. Parents: John LUMMYS and Agnes LYNGWOOD/LINGWOOD.
