He left, according to his inventory,.(6298) Love (680) uses LYMAN's estate as an example of an average estate and notes that when he died he had 4 cows, 3 goats, and 8 hogs. That year he had planted 5 acres Indian corn, 3 rods peas and barley, 1 acre wheat, 1 acre oats, and 1 acre meslin. He notes that LYMAN lost much of his cattle at the time of the removal to Hartford. According to Holman (161), Richard was 23 when he lost his father and mother and probably took care of his younger siblings for a few years. Parents: Richard LYMAN I and Sarah OSBORNE.

He married to Hepzibah FORD in 1640. (6299)(6300) (6301)(6302) Children were: Hepzibah LYMAN, Sarah LYMAN , Richard LYMAN III, Thomas LYMAN, Elizabeth LYMAN, Joanna LYMAN, Hannah LYMAN, John LYMAN.

bullet Richard LYMAN I was christened on 30 Oct 1580 in High Ongar, Essex, England. (6303)(6304) (6305) (6306)(6307) (6308)(6309) About 25 miles SE of London. He Court awarded the Manor at Pasfield Hall in High Ongar to Richard on 8 Aug 1606 in High Ongar, Essex, England. (6310) The tenements were called Petfiled (Pasfield), Serleshope, and Cashmans, and the 7-acre cottage was in Pashfield. His mother Elizabeth RANDE LYMAN had inherited at least eh Pasfiled property from her father Peter RANDE who inherited from his father William RANDE. He his tenements in Petfield, Serleshope, and Chachmans and a cottage in Pashfield to Richard Dike in 1629 in High Ongar, Essex, England.(6311) (6312) Siemiatkoski (627) says this sale may have occurred 19 Sep 1631, or "perhaps the date is that when the transaction was recorded." He was a school teacher before 1631. (6313) He emigrated on 2 Nov 1631 to Nantasket, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(6314) (6315)(6316) (6317)(6318) Before emigrating to America, he sold his lands that he had paid taxes on in 1610, 1627 and 1629. He left from either Bristol (Coleman) or London (Savage) on the Lion with wife Sarah, and children Phyllis, Richard, Sarah, John and Robert. It departed with 60 passengers on 23 Aug 1631 and arrived in Nastasket 2 months and 10 days later. He was registered as being bound for Roxbury. The ship finally anchored in Boston on Nov 2. The ship captain give them a six or seven canon salute. Many of the people from nearby plantations came to receive them. There occurred a large an open outpouring of love. The plantation owners brought the new arrivals several days worth of pigs, lamb, venison, and poultry. A great Thanksgiving feast was held on November 11 all over Boston to commemorate the event.

Church records, however, say that it was in the 9th month of that year that he came to new England. He moved between 2 Nov 1631 and 1635 to Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(6319) (6320) They settled in Charlestown and went to church in Roxbury. He received 10 pounds 3s. for a "fat hog" in 1632 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(6321) He became a member Roxbury church, as member #11 about 1632 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (6322) This date is my estimate based upon information in Anderson (585). He took the oath of a freeman on 11 Jun 1633 in Roxbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(6323) (6324) It was a year later according to 503, page 35. It was two years later according to 161, page 385. He Slave or indentured servant owner Owned two servants, assumed to be indentured before 1635 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony.(6325) It is said (503) that "Richard is reported to have begun life in the New World as a man of 'considerable estate, keeping two servants'." Thus I assume that he owned those servants before the move to Hartford in 1635. He was Forman of General Court on 11 Jun 1635. (6326) He moved on 15 Oct 1635 to Hartford, Connecticut Colony. (6327)(6328) (6329) (6330) Richard LYMAN was described as weak, but among those who joined a major event called by some "the great removal" to Connecticut. A party of about 100 persons traveled two weeks in the untracked wilderness before arriving in Windsor, where some settled but some went on to Hartford (including Richard) and Whethersfield. They traveled through forest without trails with nothing more than a compass. It was October and cold. Richard was sick and melancholy and lost many cattle on the trip which strayed and were never again found. Richard became one of the original proprietors of Hartford. He and his wife joined the first church in Hartford where Rev Thomas Hooker was pastor.

Coleman cites from Trumbull's Colonial Records, "The journey from Massachusetts was made in about fourteen days time, the distance being more than one hundred miles and through a trackless wilderness. They had no guide but their compass, and made their way over mountains, through swamps, thickets and rivers, which were not passable but with the greatest difficulty. They had no cover but the heavens, not any lodgings but those which simple nature afforded them. They drove with them one hundred and sixty head of cattle, and, by the way, subsisted in a great measure on the milk of their cows. Mrs. Hooker [the minister's wife] was borne through the wilderness on the shoulders of the men. The people carried their packs, arms, and some utensils. They were nearly a fortnight on their journey. This adventure was the more remarkable, as many of these company were persons of figure, who had lived in England in honor, affluence and delicacy, and were strangers to fatigue and danger." He An original proprietor, he was granted an average portion of land (purchased from the Indians) in 1636 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony.(6331) (6332) I suspect that this happened in 1639. He resided His house lot was on the south side of what is now Buckingham Street between Main and Washington St between 1636 and 1640 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony. (6333) Another lot of Richards was located on Wadsworth Street. It was fifth from Main St west of South Street. He appeared in court on 5 Sep 1639.(6334) Richard complained that Mr. Sequassen burned his hedge and had promised to reimburse Richard but had not done so. He signed a will on 22 Apr 1640 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony. (6335)(6336) (6337) (6338)(6339) (6340) The will of Richard LYMAN is the first on record in the City of Hartford. He bequeathed to his wife his house, furniture, and one third of his lands, the usual portion allotted to the wife. However, she died shortly after her husband and gave her third of the property to her son Robert (II). He was buried in Sep 1640 in Centre Church of Hartford, Hartford, Hartford, CT.(6341) He died in Sep 1640 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony.(6342) (6343)(6344) He left, according to his inventory, £83 and 46 acres of land (recorded int the Hartford land inventory) on 6 Sep 1641 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony. (6345)(6346) (6347)(6348) (6349)(6350) Information on his inventory was also taken from the 1639/40 Hartford land inventory. Richard's 46 acres included his house and house lot, outhouses, yards, gardens, upland, meadow, and swamp. He was a Cattleman.(6351) (6352) He was memorialized in Hartford, Hartford, CT.(6353) His name is inscribed on a stone column in the rear of the Centre Church of Hartford to memorialize the first settlers of the city. He sold 6 acres of swamp in Hartford, Connecticut Colony.(6354) He was Puritan. (6355) Part of the 5000 Puritan families were emigrated during the 1630s. Parents: Henry LYMAN and Elizabeth RANDE.

He married to Sarah OSBORNE about 1608 in England.(6356) (6357) (6358) Anderson's Great Migration Begins states "some older sources claim that Sarah was the daughter of Richard OSBORNE of Halstead, Kent [England], but there is no support for this identification." Even Siemiatkoski (627), who supports this, admits"contrary to the usual tradition, the names of the parents' fathers, Henry and Roger, were not given to any of the children. Children were: William LYMAN, Phillus LYMAN, Richard LYMAN, William LYMAN, Richard LYMAN II, Sarah LYMAN, Anne LYMAN, Lieut. John LYMAN, Robert LYMAN.

bullet Margaret MACLARTY was born about 1759.(1465) She died about 1864.(1465) Mary died about 1864 at the age of 105 living in a cottage erected by the Duke of Argyle. She was "the oldest person being the historic last name of Campbell in his Dukedom" (158).

She married to Dugald (Dougald) CAMPBELL on 5 Jul 1803 in Campbeltown, Argylshire, Scotland. (1465)(6410) Parents of Catherine Campbell may be:
1) My search of the Campbeltown church records strongly suggests that her parents are Dugald Campbell and Margaret MacLarty, which also agrees with the IGI. Regarding possible parents for Dugald: If he was born in 1776, then his parents were Donald Campbell and Mary McEwine. If he was born in 1781, then his parents were Duncan Campbell and Ann Campbell (456).
2) Two secondary sources suggests otherwise. The article on Catherine's 100th birthday states that her parents were Daniel and Mary. Stearns (672) says her father was Daniel Campbell.

Cousin Edgar SPEAR says the family was well off. According to reference 158, Daniel and Mary had 17 children, but only names Mary and Catherine.
Children were: Mary CAMPBELL, Catherine CAMPBELL, Alexander CAMPBELL, Charles CAMPBELL.

bullet Andus Wilhelm MAGNUSON (Private). Parents: Jan (John) Peter MAGNUSON and Christina.

bullet Aura Mathilda MAGNUSON (Private). Parents: Jan (John) Peter MAGNUSON and Christina.

bullet Carl Oskar MAGNUSON was born about Aug 1882 in New Sweden, Aroostock, ME. (46)(6411) He died on 28 Jan 1904 in New Sweden, Aroostock, ME. (46) Parents: Jan (John) Peter MAGNUSON and Christina.

bullet Carry MAGNUSON was born before 1870 in Undersåker, Åre, Jämtland, Sweden.(367) This is a conservative guess that she had Adrew by the time she was 18. She emigrated between 1888 and 1913.(367) (5435) She died before 1900.(367) She had died by 1900 because in the year, the census shows Andrew with another wife.

She married to Andrew J. JOHNSON before 1888.(367) The marriage certificate of their son, john, indicates that they are his parents, but Mary has retained her last name. Given how common it was in Sweden for unwed people to live and have children together, whether they were married needs to be confirmed. Children were: John William ANDERSON.

bullet George Herman MAGNUSON was born on 13 Sep 1894 in New Sweden, Aroostock, ME. (46) He died in 1913. (6412) Parents: Jan (John) Peter MAGNUSON and Christina.

bullet Jan (John) Peter MAGNUSON was born on 15 May 1846 in Skara, Västra Götaland, Sweden.(46) (6413) According to church records, her was born in Undusake, Sweden. I do not know enough about Sweden to know if this is a different place or not. He emigrated in 1882.(49) (48) He moved in 1882 to Stockholm, Aroostook, ME. (367) I have assumed that since the Jan was among those Swedes who arrived in America at the solicitation of officials in northern Maine, that he made his way to New Sweden in days. He was naturalized on 6 Dec 1889. (6414) He was a Farmer in 1913 in Stockholm, Aroostook, ME.(367) He died on 21 Apr 1925 in New Sweden, Aroostock, ME.(6415) He was buried in Rista Road Cemetery, New Sweden, Aroostock, ME. (6416) Jan is buried there with his wife and children.

He married to Christina in 1882. (46) 1880 according to 1910 census (393). According to the Gustuf Adolf Church records (132), they emigrated in 1883. This cannot be right because Carl was born in ME in 1882. They must have come by 1882 as cited by the 1900 and 1910 Census records. It was 1873 and according to the 1920 census.

John and Kristina joined the Gustaf Adof Church in New Sweden, the records from which are a prime reference source (132). They may have been married in that church or back in Sweden. John owned his home outright in 1900 (392). By 1910, when John and Chritine were 64 and 54, they had moved in with their daughter Annie and her husband _oulof Muttsin or Germany. By 1910, one of the children (not Annie) had died (393). The 1901 Census said that John was born in Sweden and his native language was English. Assume that that is an error.

They settled in the town of New Sweden, Aroostook, Maine in the far northern area of the state. The neighboring towns of New Sweden and Stockholm had very large Swedish populations and actively tried to entice Swedes to immigrate and settle the area. Encouragement also came from relatives who had already settled the area. Looking through the 1900 and 1910 census records gives the impression that half of the town was born in Sweden. The immigrants lived in their own neighborhoods as well. Children were: Carl Oskar MAGNUSON, Aura Mathilda MAGNUSON, Wilhemine (Annie) MAGNUSON , Andus Wilhelm MAGNUSON, Maria Elizabeth MAGNUSON, George Herman MAGNUSON .

bullet Maria Elizabeth MAGNUSON was born on 13 Jan 1893 in New Sweden, Aroostock, ME. (46) She was baptised on 16 Sep 1917 in New Sweden, Aroostock, ME.(6417) She became a member First Baptist Church in New Sweden on 16 Sep 1917 in New Sweden, Aroostock, ME.(6417) She died in 1918 or 1919. (6417) Maria MAGNUSON died when Lillian was just a baby. The year was 1818 according to church records (133) but 1919 according to Swedish American Genealogist (531). She was buried in Rista Road Cemetery, New Sweden, Aroostock, ME.(6418) Parents: Jan (John) Peter MAGNUSON and Christina.

She married to John William ANDERSON on 30 Jun 1913 in Caribou, Aroostock, ME.(367) John William ANDERSON and Maria Elizabet MAGNUSON may be Anglicized names. Maybe he was known as Johan Wilhem Andersson. When they were married, Mary had been living live her parents in Stockholm, Aroostook, Maine. John's parents were deceased (116). Family lore suggests that John's parents died in Sweden.

Family lore holds that John eventually went back to Sweden, but before doing so, he gave his children away to _______, a family in Maine who raised the sisters as farmlands.

Children were: Helen ANDERSON, Lillian Mae (Kippy) ANDERSON.

bullet John MAUDESLEY was born about 1610. Reference 489 states that his brother Henry, born 1611, was the younger, which means John was born at least a year before but not too long because he was baptized in 1611. He was baptised on 31 Dec 1611 in England.(6436) He resided near White Hill (today beleived to be near Inglewhite before 1629/30 in Lancastershire, England.(6437) (6438) Sailed from Plymouth, England. He emigrated on 20 Mar 1629/30 to Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(6439) (6440) According to Edward Carpenter and Ensign Benjamin Cooley, John probably came aboard the "Mary and John" from Plymouth, England, although he may have come in 1635 aboard the "James." Richardson (448) cites only the James, while Stearns (674) cites only the Mary and John. He settled right there in Mattapan (which soon became Dorchester, and lived there until he died. He a parcel and house he received as part of the Thomas Kimberley grant on 22 Jun 1638 in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (6452)(6453) His grave is a few feet north of Rev. Richard Mather. It is marked by "a brown free-stone, supported on a brick foundation, about three feet high" and was reported to be "in a good state of preservation" in 1944. Left London 21 Aug 1635 for new England. Lived in Dorchester. He had children but his line dies out. He was a Cooper. He was a Captain in the King Phillip's War. Reference 489 has a few pages about him. Parents: MAUDSLEY.

He married to Cicely before 1635 in England.(6454) (6455)(6456) Richardson (448) and Stlies (633) claim that John married first Elizabeth, then Cicely, but Savage thinks that they are the same person. Richardson provides unlikely birth dates for the children to support such a marriage order. A Genealogical Sketch argues for Cicely and cites her will which is signed Sisily Modsly. John is among signatures on a document establishing the first free school in Dorchester (448). Children were: Thomas MOSELEY, John MOSELEY, Elizabeth MOSELEY.
