She married to Thomas DIBBLE on 2 Apr 1699 in East Hampton, Suffolk, NY.(6709) Rattray says that Thomas married Rebecca MULFORD on page 280 and Rachel MULFORD on page 281. I assume the first is an error. In another book by Van Buren Lamb (623), he says they were married 30 Jan 1706, but that is two years after the birth of their first child. I assume that is an error. Thomas was a weaver (202). She died on 19 Dec 1671 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA.(6732) (6733)(6734) Johnson (622) says she died Sep 29 and dated her will the 30th. He does not cite the year but even without it, it seems pretty unlikely that she could have signed her will after she had died. She signed a will on 21 Dec 1671. (6735) Anderson (585) date for the will being signed is AFTER Johnson (647) date of death. She had an estate probated on 29 Dec 1671 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA.(6736) (6737) She was born in England. bullet Elizabeth NEWCOMB was born on 26 Jun 1658 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA. (6746)(6747) Ferris and Savage say Aug. Parents: Francis NEWCOMB and Rachel.

bullet Francis NEWCOMB was born about 1605 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England. (6748)(6749) (6750)(6751) This is only a possible birthplace, however, it is "highly probable" that he resided there according to John Bearse Newcomb (626) since many passengers aboard the Planter were from there. Baptism records of one parish in St. Albans were destroyed by fire.

Although his gravestone says he died in 1692 age 100, his claimed age at emigration would make him only 87. Most researches think the latter more reliable. He became a member Boston First Church on 28 Feb 1635/36 in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(6752) (6753) He emigrated on 6 Apr 1635 to Massachusetts Bay Colony. (6754)(6755) (6756) Francis (30) came wife Rachel (20) and children Rachel (2.5) and John (9 mo) in the Planter with which had debarked from London in April 1635 with 107 passengers. He moved after 6 Apr 1635 to Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (6757)(6758) Settled in the part of Boston which became Braintree. He moved about 1639 to Mt. Wollaston (later Braintree), Massachusetts Bay Colony.(6759) (6760) Colket (476) says it was 1640. Newcomb (626) says it was 1638. He died on 27 May 1692 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA.(6761) (6762)(6763) (6764) Pope (471) says he was 100 years old when he died 13 Jun 1672 but was 30 when he emigrated in 1635, thus contradicting himself. Saveage says he died 27 May 1992 and suggests that claims that he was 100 were aggesgerations and suggests he was 87. That part of Braintree where he resided is now Quincy. He was a Husbandman.(6765) This was his occupation according to the ship's register. He was educated Signed his own name.(6766)

He married to Rachel before 1632.(6767) I assumed that they were married a year before the birth of the eldest child. Children were: Rachel NEWCOMB, John NEWCOMB, Hannah NEWCOMB, Mary NEWCOMB, Sarah NEWCOMB, Judith NEWCOMB, Peter NEWCOMB, Abigail NEWCOMB, Leah NEWCOMB, Elizabeth NEWCOMB.

bullet Leah NEWCOMB was born on 30 May 1654 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA. (6778)(6779) Ferris and Savage say Jul. Parents: Francis NEWCOMB and Rachel.

bullet Mary NEWCOMB was born on 1 Feb 1640 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA. (6780)(6781) (6782)(6783) I have four different DOBs: Verne Spear (117) says 1 Apr 1640, Savage (474) says 31 Mar 1640, Pope (471) says 31 Jan 1640, and Newcomb (626) says 1 Feb 1640. Maybe his mother's labor becan 31 Jan and ne was born 1 Feb. Just a guess. She died on 1 Aug 1678 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA.(6784) Parents: Francis NEWCOMB and Rachel .

She married to George SPEAR (Deacon) on 27 Apr 1675 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA.(6785) They were married only four months after the death of George SPEAR's first wife Mary (117, 118). Pope (471) calls her Mary DEARING. It would appear that george fathered Mary at age 63. According to reference 118, George SPEAR purchased a slave during the King Phillip's War (1675 - 1676). At this time the colonial government sold Indians captured during the war as slaves and George purchased an Indian boy for £2 (the two cows George sold in 1652 were valued at £10). Two years later, however, the government reversed this policy and reclaimed the slaves. The Constable of Braintree took the boy. Spear petitioned for redress, obtained 20 nobles, and issued a petition dated 1678/79 in which he stated, "bestowed two yeers care & education to prepare him for my service which tooke good efect he being brought to be very tractable & hopefull to be very serviceable." When the Constable took him he was "sore against the boys will who cried and strove to his utmost against it & I believe rather have lost his life then to have gone from me. I had so gained on his affections. I esteemed him better than the best black that I could have bought which have cost neere £30." The boy was apparently not returned.

On 29 Oct 1678, SPEAR took the Oath of Allegiance, as did his son Ebenezer on the same day (118). What is this?

Sometime after 1679, they moved to New Dartmouth, ME (now Pemaquid, Lincoln, ME) and occupied the Gent property (117, 118).

On 21 May 21 1688, when SPEAR was about 75 years old, he sent a petition to Sir Edmund Andros, Governor of New England. He stated that his first wife's husband, John Gent, was an ancient inhabitant of New Dartmouth and had owned much land before the Indian War which was "cast away" while his family took refuge in Boston, and that he, being "very ancient" himself, having married the widow and returned to new Dartmouth after it was resettled, and bringing with him much stock, requested that his two sons, Samuel and Nathaniel SPEAR, live near him while he is alive and therefore be granted 150 acres apiece as near to New Dartmouth may be.

The plan was never enacted. On September 5 and 6 of 1688, just four moths later, New Dartmouth was attacked "by a strong force of Indians." Only a few inhabitants were able to reach the safety of the garrison and escaped. All of the homes and buildings were destroyed. New Dartmouth remained deserted for 30 years. There is no further record of George SPEAR suggesting that he was killed by Indians (118). Children were: Mary SPEAR, Eliezer SPEAR.

She married to Samuel DEERING on 9 Oct 1657.(6786) (6787)(6788) She had been the third wife of Samuel DEERING but he left her a widow (117). Her marriage to Samuel DEERING was 10 Nov 1657 according to Savage and 10 Nov or 9 Dec accoring to Ferris (615). Children were: Rachel DEERING, Elizabeth DEERING.

bullet Peter NEWCOMB was born on 16 Mar 1648 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA. (6789)(6790) (6791)(6792) He died on 20 May 1725 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA.(6793) Parents: Francis NEWCOMB and Rachel.
