(7864) He was an indentured sevant bet 18 feb 1628/29 and 27 jun 1629 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.(7865) According to Stott (682), Andrew apprenticed his father-in-law, George WATHEN, a joiner, on 18 Feb 1628/29 for a term of seven years. It was discovered, however, that "upon examination of this man on complaint of the company that the apprentice was married." In fact, Andrew had been married for four years but English law forbid apprentices from being married. He was therefore discharged 27 Jun 1629. Obviously his father-in-law knew that he was married when he signed the contract. (and Andrew being a Minister's son) Parents: Reverand William SARGENT and Elizabeth.

(7883) According to Babson, "It was probably this Nathaniel Sargent who kept a Tavern at the corner of Middle and Pleasant Streets [in Gloucester] about ninety years ago." (7885)(7886) He was a Tavern keeper in 1727 in Gloucester, Essex, MA.(7887) Babson (231) notes that this tavern may have been the "house of entertainment [that] was kept for several years, in the early part of the last century, for the accommodation of mariners passing through the cut." It may have been "at Done Fudging, where his father had lived" (231). He died on 12 Dec 1732 in Gloucester, Essex, MA. bullet William SARGENT was born about 1623.(7901) (7902) I really do not know when he was born or died. My two sources are confusing. Sargent (497) says he was born 20 Jun 1624 and died 19 Feb 1717. He would be 92 years 7 months. She does not cites her sources. Stottt (682) says he was born about 1624 and died 9 Feb 1715/16, "age 93." But these dates make him 90-92! I will therefore arbitrarily assume that he died about 1716 at age 93 and was therefore born about 1623. He resided Near old burial ground. in 1649 in Gloucester, Essex, MA. (7903)(7904) In this year, William was issued a land grant. He was Representative in 1671 in Gloucester, Essex, MA.(7905) He appeared in court in 1688 in Salem, Essex, MA.(7906) In this year, Gloucester was one of several towns where a tax levied by Massachusetts Governor Sir Edmund Andros was resisted by some citizens. In Gloucester, William was among seven men (all selectman, representatives, or constables) who were fined £3 40 shillings for non-compliance. He was Representative between 1690 and 1691.(7907) He died about 1716 in Gloucester, Essex, MA.(7908) (7909) William died at the age of 93 "having serviced all of his compeers in the early settlement of the town [of Gloucester]" (231). Regarding the day of death, see my note note about his birth. He was Selectman (for several years) in Gloucester, Essex, MA. (7910) He emigrated. x Parents: Andrew SARGENT and Mary WATHEN.

bullet SCHLACHET Parents: Joseph SCHLACHET and WIFE.

bullet Anna SCHLACHET (Private). Parents: Herman SCHLACHET and Gertrude STINE.

bullet Daniel SCHLACHET (Private). Parents: Herman SCHLACHET and Gertrude STINE.

bullet Herman SCHLACHET was born on 20 Nov 1883 in Bialy Dunajec, Austria. (7925)(370) He was educated a primary school before 1900.(7925) He was a waiter about 1900 in Europe.(7925) Herman became an apprentice to learn the restaurant trade, probably in Vienna. He became a restaurant worker and then a waiter. He was never without work and traveled to several other European capitals, including Paris, working as a waiter at a number of prestigious restaurants. He was a waiter at the Parker House. before 1905 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. (7925) This was his first work experience in America. He was a "Captain of waiters" at Rector's in 1905 in New York, New York, NY. (7925) Rector's was a favorite eating place of Diamond Jim Brady and as famous as Delmonico's. Herman made "phenomenal money" as a waiter. He moved in 1905 to Nowy Targ, Austria.(7925) Herman decided to go back to Nowy Targ (possibly to marry his second cousin, but Arnold is not sure). When Herman returned to Austria, however, he was drafted, since he had not completed his mandatory military service and was still a citizen of Austria. He served in the Army of the Austria-Hungarian Empire (then under Emperor Franz Josef) as a _____ (rank). Herman's mother died while he was in service. He moved in 1908 to New York, New York, NY. (7925) He was a waiter, possibly at the Plaza Hotel in 1908 in New York, New York, NY.(7925) He was educated pharmacy via mail and night classes after 1908 in New York, New York, NY. (7925) At this time he met Gertrude STINE. Gertrude's three brothers were pharmacists and Gertrude insisted that Herman study pharmacy as well. He studied by mail, took classes when he could fit them in, passed the New York State pharmaceutical exam and became a registered pharmacist in 19___. He moved in 1910 to Chicago, Cook, IL. (7925) Gertrude's brothers all were already established pharmacists in Chicago. They lived in an apartment above a drug store owned by a relative. Herman then bought "an old fashioned German drug store on Larrabee Street on the near north side of Chicago." Arnold was had a photo of his father standing in a white coat in front of the store window with a sign that read "Deutsche Apotheke." The drug store remained in the family until about 1970. The building was still standing in 1997 He resided Howe Street near Lincoln Park in 1911 in Chicago, Cook, IL.(7925) This was the heart of the German-speaking neighborhood. The area has since become more expensive then it was back then. He was described as 5'8" tall with blue eyes, fair skin, and brown hair in 1913 in Chicago, Cook, IL. (7926) Arnold said his father was "5'10" tall, strongly built, with blond hair and blue-gray eyes" (043). He was naturalized on 21 Mar 1913 in Chicago, Cook, IL.(7926) He died in Sep 1973 in Newport Beach, Orange, CA. (7927)(370) Parents: Joseph SCHLACHET and Ester TIEBERGER.

He married to Gertrude STINE on 6 Dec 1909. (7925) They moved into an elegant apartment above Central Park. Accoring to Arnold HARTLEY (043), Herman and Scheidel were the only two children of Josef SCHLACHET and Ester Tieberger, but Joseph had other children through a previous marriage. Herman eventually emigrated from Austria to settle in Chicago. His son, Arnold HARTLEY, believes Herman was the first SCHLACHET in this country. Herman was born in Bialy-Dunajec (pronounced Done-i-et), Austria's Tatra range of the Carpathian Mountains. The town is known for its "Gorali" which is Polish for the wood carving of the native mountaineers. Bialy-Dunajiec is a few miles away from the larger towns of Nowy Targ and the skiing resort of Zakopane. All of these towns are now part of Poland. His father Joseph died when Herman was two and Jennie was three months old. Jennie remained with Ester, but Herman was sent away and raised by his half-brother Moritz (Josef's eldest son), who basically adopted him.

At home, Herman and Gertrude spoke mainly German. Arnold learned German by listening to his parents (005).

Children were: Arnold HARTLEY, Daniel SCHLACHET, Anna SCHLACHET.

bullet Joseph SCHLACHET died about 1886.(2228) Grandma Sally Josef died when Jennie was only three months old. Arnold said Josef caught a cold which developed into a fatal case of pneumonia. Since Herman and Jennie were born near Zakopane, it is possible that Josef died there as well. Arnold said that Jennie remained with her mother but her brother Herman, then 2 years old, was sent to be raised by Moritz SCHLACHET and his children. Morritz was Herman's half brother, a son of Josef's first marriage, but he was old enough to be Herman's father and basically odoted him. Like Sally, Arnold also believes Ester remarried a man named FREY. Arnold believes Ester died during World War I, about 1917, near Zakopane. He was a "Taglohner" or day laborer. (7925) His son Herman told his son Arnold that Josef "was strong enough to carry a sack of wheat in each hand and one in his teeth."

He married to WIFE. (7925) They were married near Zakopane. Most everything I know about Josef and Ester came from the recollections of my grandmother Sally, Arnold HARTLEY, and Uzi BEN-AMI. All of my SCHLACHET relatives believe that Josef is our common ancestor, but no one knows the year that Josef was born, married, remarried, died or how old he was when his last child was born (a topic of considerable discussion). What is certain is that after he remarried and fathered Herman and Scheidel (Jennie), he was old enough to be their grandfather.

Both grandma Sally and Arnold believe that Josef was quite old by the time he fathered Scheidel. HARTLEY believes he was at least 65, while Grandma Sally firmly claims he was about 80! This would make Josef's birth year either 1805 or 1820.

When Ester had bore Herman and Scheidel, family lore has it that Josef was quite old. When Scheidel was born, he was at least 65 (according to Arnaol), while Grandma Sally firmly claims he was about 80! This would make Josef's birth year either 1805 or 1820.

Yakoob Schlachet: was a decorated WWI veteran of the Austro-Hungarian army (lost a leg too) was shot when presenting his medals to nazis.

Kalman (Charlie) Schlachet: According to Arnold Harley, Kalman owned a store in Berlin, immigrated to America just before WWII, settled in Chicago and went by the name of Charles or Charlie Schlachet. Arnold, however, believes his father Herman, who arrived in 1902 and also settled in Chicago, was the first Schlachet in the US. According to Sally, Charlie and Thea Schlachet left Berlin and immigrated to the United States with their four-year-old son Peter. Grandma sally carried for Peter for a few weeks while his parents looked for an apartment. Peter spoke only German and did not like anything my grandmother cooked ("des schmeck nicht") until she gave him a hot dog, which he liked. Peter's son Daniel appeared in a Broadway play and movie called "swoon" about the 1924 kidnapping and murder of Nathan (babe) Leopold, jr. Which is performed to critical acclaim. I have the review on page c8 of the march 27 New York Times, which has a picture captioned, "Daniel Schlachet in "swoon."

Schlachet, Mala married Emil Ben-ami. They had either four or five sons: Mukha, Zigush, Ella, and Olec. Mukha and Zigush were killed by Nazis. Ella died as a child. Only Olec lived (3). Olec Ben-am. Uzi's father was born in Zakopane (Austria or Poland at the time?) On 1916. He married Sosshana, born on 1918, on (date) in Nowy-Targ, Poland. They had two sons: Yron and Uzi. The moved to Israel in 1935 and 1938 respectively. My parents' native languages were polish and Yiddish. They also learned in school German. Of course they learned Hebrew even before they came to (then) Palestine, and both speak fluent English (courtesy of the British mandate over Palestine, 1919-1948). Their address is Alexander (or Oek) Ben-ami, #4 Pnkas St., Ramat-gan, Israel 52285. The visited Poland from 1990 to 1992 and cleaned graves and erected a memorial on the "destroyed and defiled cemetery" in Nowy-Targ. Uzi parents visited Nowy-Targ in 1992 and Uzi says they report that the poles "were just as virulently anti-Semitic as ever, although almost no Jews live in Poland anymore." Uzi's mother visited her father's show store in Nowy-Targ. The store apparently still had a sign with her father's name on it, but it now belonged to a pole (3). Uzi Ben-ami married Judy and had two daughters: Naomi and tali (3). Uzi Ben-ami was born in Israel on he emigrated to the us on 1970. Rather than considering himself polish, German, Austrian or Hungarian, Uzi considers himself simply Jewish. If it were polish, l would hide it. Too much to be ashamed of." He spent many hours with his father obtaining an oral history of the family. He gained further information from Arnold Harley and his now deceased nephew, Kalman (Charlie) Schlachet. He has several old photos of the family, but none of josef Schlachet, from whom all of us seem to be descended. Uzi has no desire to visit Nowy-Targ, I've never been there, nor do I want to respect these perpetual anti-Semites by being polite to them. If I ever go there it would be to show presence at the concentration camps where any relatives and yours were murdered with much polish enthusiasm."

Morik's daughter Erna Schlachet married Paul Schindel and had four children. Fred Schindel, son of Erna Schlachet, "hid for ten months in a cave he dug in the ground until the Russians came." When Spielberg filmed Schindler's list, he also created a multimillion dollars non-profit organization called shoah (holocaust in Hebrew) that video tapes survivors to ensure documentation. Uzi arranged for Fred and his wife to be videotaped and has a copy of the tape. Fred moved to the United States in and now resides in Silver Spring, MD. He is age 84 and a very vigorous and with-it person. His phone number is 301-439-0443.

Uzi's relatives: An uncle on his mother's side survived Auschwitz. He was brought there when the ghetto in Nowy-Targ had its 'final-action' as they called it, 28 Aug 1942. An uncle on Uzi's mother's side went back to Nowy-Targ, shortly after the war and had to run. His mother's brothers were among the Jews forced to leave Poland in 1956, when Gomulka came to power. Now lives in France while lives in Israel. Both are in their 80s now.
Children were: Moritz SCHLACHET, Olek SCHLACHET, SCHLACHET, SCHLACHET.

He married to Ester TIEBERGER before 1883.(2228) Sally says Jennie's father Joseph died when Jennie was only 3 months old. According to Arnold HARTLEY, while Jennie stayed with her mother, her brother Herman, two years old, was raised by his half-brother Moritz SCHLACHET. Morritz was the eldest son from Josef's first marriage and was old enough to be Hermans father (009, 043). Josef also knew German, Yiddish and some Polish (005). Children were: Herman SCHLACHET, Scheidel SCHLACHET.

bullet Moritz SCHLACHET was born in Nowy Targ, Austria. (7928) Sometime prior to W.W.I, this first son of Josef Schlachet went to Budapest "to fetch himself a wife." He married Bertha Drelich or Drelik, probably from Budapest. Bertha was born on (year) in place). After marrying Moritz Schlachet, they moved to Nowy-Targ, but, while in Poland, bertha continued to speak Hungarian for the rest of her life. Arnold says Morik also adopted his father's son Herman when he was about two years old. Uzi says Fred Schindel remembers the adopted Herman. As a result, Moritz had two sons named Herman! Many of the descendants of Moritz were killed by Nazis (3). Moritz and bertha had three sons: Yakoob, Herman, and Charley. They also had five daughters: Eshcho, Rella, Malla, Ruzia, and Honyo. Parents: Joseph SCHLACHET and WIFE.

bullet Olek SCHLACHET Parents: Joseph SCHLACHET and WIFE.

bullet Scheidel SCHLACHET was born on 25 Dec 1885 in Nowy Targ, Austria. (2228)(5683) Grandma Sally says her mother Scheidel SCHLACHET was born on Christmas day in Nowy Targ, Austria, but was unsure of the year. Since Scheidel was 29 on 1 Jun 1915, when the new York State census of that year was taken, she was born in 1885. Nowy Tag is now in extreme southern Poland near the Slovak border near the ski resort of Zakopane. She emigrated in 1901 to New York, New York, NY. (2228)(5683) At the age of 16, Scheidel emigrated to the US. Granma Sally says her mother came through Ellis Island. The 1915 New York State Census reports Jennie had been in the US for 14 years. This would likely make the year of her emigration 1901. She died on 10 Aug 1946 in Bronx, Bronx, NY.(5690) At the age of 60, Jennie died from stomach cancer and lung congestion on a hot day in August in her home in the Bronx. Sally and Eva had been taking care of her. She was buried on 11 Aug 1946 in Mt Lebanon Cemetery, Cyprus Hills, Long Island.(5690) She was educated. (2228) Grandma says her mother never went to school a single day in her entire life. She grew up on a farm and never had a year of schooling, not even kindergarten. Yet, Grandma Sally said her mother read Tolstoy and Dolsoesky at night. Moreover, Jennie spoke Polish, Yiddish, German and English fluently and without any accent and taught herself to read and write in Polish, German, Yiddish and English. Sally's parents spoke English around the house to be more American, but spoke in Polish whenever they did not want the children to understand what they were saying. Despite her complete lack of education, Sally said Jennie became President of the PTA at Public School 77. Parents: Joseph SCHLACHET and Ester TIEBERGER.

She married to Hyman KEMPLER on 5 Jul 1902 in New York, New York, NY.(5683) (2228) The date is an estimate. Grandma Sally says Hyman met Scheidel in NYC, and did not know her in Austria. She says that they married on July 5 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan a year after Jennie came over. The 1915 New York State Census reports Jennie had been in the US for 14 years. This would likely make the year of her emigration 1901 and, if Sally was right, they were married 5 July 1902. Children were: Anna KEMPLER, Sadie Gertrude (Sally) KEMPLER, Joseph KEMPLER, Eve KEMPLER.
